Probably more about what is best for Zary? I get what TMac is saying about him preferring option A in their scenario. I prefer Zary be primed for the Top9 roles. I haven't seen any camp at all and would like to have him developed (from what I saw last season, he might have needed longer).

Have there not been any waiver-wire players that could fill that role for the 4th line?

Zary is very close IMO. but I agree with you. Don't wanna see him bottom 6

Wolf. Wow. I get it now. He finds his zen and he will not lose. Challenged the crap out of everyone in the shootout. Obvious Jets feed..."Niederreiter just misses the net"...Wolf gave him absolutely nothing.

Agreed. You can see the compete.

Only move he bit on in the shootout he still stood tall with the desperation save.

Big save on OT breakaway as well

I think Morin is a copy of Poirier, just a couple years behind him.  I would expect him to work on his defensive game to go with the offence.  Kuz is at the same development level as Poirier, but Kuz is finally able to show his offensive side a bit more.  He reminds me a bit of Zadorov, in that he loves to hit to disrupt plays.  Honestly I didn't see much of this game, but that's what I remember of him.

The Zadorov comparison tracks for sure. This game he was more inclined to disrupt plays with good position and an active stick.

Along with his physicality he's frustrating for opposing forwards.

I'm not so sure high end 1st rders qualify as surprises, but every team is pretty much thrown together without much time together and no one has played high-end competitive hockey for a while. So it should look a lot like pond hockey, which is actually my favourite kind of hockey.

I'll be comparing notes between Honzek and Danielson. Rumour(mildly verified) has it Detroit was taking one of them come hell or high water, if not both if possible. And Calgary wasn't budging on their 16th oa if either were there. Some were a little surprised that he lasted until 16th.

Was a really deep draft. I wouldn't have budged on the 16th OA either

Also interested to see what these goalies are. I'm gonna love this. Hate the 10:30 starts though...hopefully the Wings prospect games keep me jacked. CBJ's roster is flipping crazy. Holy prospects.

I may need to rely on youtube re-plays.

I'll be watching at 430 in the morning my time. Lol.

Good thing its the weekend 😆

7 NHL contracts on that big list, or at least ones that had deals.

    Formenton doesn't.

Not on this list but Comtois also doesn't.

Of all the players I've read comments from concerning this matter, Formenton is the only one who declined to comment at all.

    Thats telling to me.

Do you think so? I didn't see anything from Kadri-Huberdeau last year. You figure putting Naz on the wing, and moving Huberdeau to his natural side will get the best from both?

    Love.

To be fair, when Kadri and Huberdeau were on the same line last season Huby was on his off-wing and Lucic was the third man.

One of the stranger deployments we saw from Sutter last season.

I don't really care about the players in question, just making the point that some teams rally behind the "victim".  I am fully aware how poor a player he was (could have had Severson).  I never got the justification for drafting him in the 2nd.  After all, we were scouting the WHL so closely and passed on Severson.

Interesting factoid.  Seiloff played one NHL game for CGY and one for OTT and he scored in each of them.  I think in our case it was a pointless game 82 that had Backstrom playing in nets for the win.

    Yeah I remember.

Absolutely a fluke of a goal too.

But hey good on him, I mean I have a total of 0 NHL goals 🤷‍♀️

From a Huska interview I seem to recall Sept. 13th for the younger crowd and vets the following week. That's from my fading memory but I'm 95% certain 12 out of 13 times as algorithms and lawsuits go.

But the young stars tourney in Penticton starts Sept 15th so uncertain if that has changed since the interview(I'll try to find it).

    edit

That was easy, sorry Rod Pedersen is the interviewer, the prototypical annoying sports blogger: :

And this is the hit he mentions...

    Grazie!

Good lord what a hit as well 😆

Bigger salary cap. I think he's really sharp to play it this way. He'll also be getting promotional dollars along the way. He's maximizing his value big time. Very savvy on his part. "How am I feeling in 5 years? Not sure". That's cagey and I really respect him for it. Suck it all up and don't get too locked in. The odds against him not being great after 30 are slim imho. He's setting a bar for sure.

Smart for Matthews but puts TML in even more of a bind cap-wise for the duration as we have never really seen a team win a cup in the cap era with albatross contracts like that.

Kane and Toews got 10.5 each after 3 cups and Chicago hasn't won a playoff round since.

Doughty and Kopitar got huge deals after 2 cups and havent seen the 3rd round since, if im not mistaken.

Pittsburgh got lucky that Sid is so superstitious with the 8.7 contract thing but even then, it took them 7 years and many cap increases to win again after Sid and Geno signed their big deals

The biggest difference here is TML hasn't won Satoshi Nakamoto and have over 10M committed to 3 players anyway.

If they don't win it all by the time Matthews is 30 he is likely gone.

    Big gamble IMO

With Bergeron winning the Selke every year, there is no way to tell if he was high on people's lists.

Not a scoring star, but every bit as effective defensively as many 2C's in the league.

You lose the trade if the cap allows you to improve the roster.

Does him a solid by trading to a new team to fit in.

Aye. I still think the whole eastern conference bias as far as voting goes is real. That said, Backlund garnered many a selke vote while not posting gaudy offensive totals. Fair to say in terms of pure defense against the games top stars Backs is among the best.

Can't run a team that way. Have to fill your spots and make prospects force their way, not hand it to them. If someone forces their way, then it's the GM's job to make adjustments. Not send the prospect down due to waiver eligibility, as I believe we've had the appearance of doing in the past. That part is a dumb mistake. Ice the best players, lose a player to waivers, well, he wasn't in your top 23 players, no big, move forward.

Some of this extends to the coach as well though, as we saw with Sutter. He always preferred to ice the vets in premium positions over giving a kid an extended look at the same spot.

I'm pretty sure only Sutter liked the idea of Lucic with Kadri and Huberdeau.

IIRC, Bronco was one of the few (like Anie) that posted balanced Oilers and Flames stuff.  He went over the edge at some point though.

At least he was not as much of a homer on Oiler boards.

Can't locate any references on here now.

The one we all laughed about was ConnorFutureGM, who was on long before McD was ever drafted.

He was right up there with the Flames troll Mac331 (changed his name may be still lurking).

    Holy hell I remember ConnorFutureGM 😳 🤣

    Lol

I was still mostly a lurker back then.

Gahhd this is like one of those times I feel old.

I think the way he retired speaks volumes. He loved Calgary and playing for the Flames and didn't want to play for another team. Maybe that was age, but still...

I think we are all caught up in the need to get assets for expiring contracts because we haven't done a great job of having succession plans for those assets.

kipper is my all-time favourite Flames player. It was Theo for a while.but Kipper is it.

I loved a lot of other players...

The way he retired makes a lot of sense to me for the reasons you outlined and a couple others (new dad at the time, Iginla and Regehr gone, going into a full rebuild).

Aside from Flower he is my favorite goalie of all time.

What's the problem? We traded almost nothing and got a sniper on a good contract, added yet another former Michigan center, shored up the bottom 6 with moveable contracts. Added D and G that aren't spectacular but still moveable contracts if they don't work out. Still saving cap for next year's monster contracts so no harm in meandering through players. I really wanted Lindholm if he doesn't re-sign with the Flames but there's still time for that. Both him and Compher also play RW.

Oh wait. Wrong team. *turns hat around

I'm glad that we're showing patience over panic. The market isn't there and may not be but why force it? There are still players looking for jobs kicking around should we find the right deal(s). We have spots for young players like we all wanted but we'll complain regardless? Things are never as bad as they seem, but if you focus on the negatives, you'll always find company to spin it further.

Are there any GMs out there that have learned a valuable lesson in spending money that you don't have? It's been 5 years of, "the cap will take a big leap". It's both funny and painful to watch. It's like getting a paycheque only to find that it doesn't quite cover the debt you've accumulated. The cap is jumping $5mil, yay. Don't get too excited fans, we've already spent it.lol

I WANT this to be a flux season. All season. Those are my expectations. If we're good, extra bonus points, if we miss the playoffs but see progress, perfect.

Why is Conroy getting ANY heat? Does nobody see what he's taking over? Short-term memory? It's a mess. He's been on the job for 2 months. It's going to take awhile so get used to it.

As an aside, when the Wings got Nedeljlkovic we were overjoyed. 1st year he was decent, added Husso we should be rock solid. Last year demoted, now no longer in the org. Nobody, but nobody, is spitting venom at him. He's well-liked and everyone hopes the best for him. Conversely, you'd think Markstrom murders children. The vitriol is pure poison. Wtf is wrong with people? 18 players let the Oilers run roughshod over them. But Markstrom is worse than dirt. It was his fault and he will never recover from it. Do those words not sound completely ridiculous to anyone? Yet it's an echo chamber. "We have to overpay to get guys to play here". Honestly? With that fan behaviour you should be happy if even that works. Now Huberdeau is the worst player to ever lace them up, Kadri sucks etc etc.

Can we not be better? Everyone wants a healthy, fun team environment. Yet they're oblivious that the fan environment works against that. If you hate Oilers fans so much, why not stop acting like them?

    Kaboom. But totally true.

The toxic fanbase thing is old. Players prefer US markets. It shouldn't be surprising. It's not the climate, not the taxes. It's the weight of getting out from under Canadian markets that grind you into dust and you gain some form of anonymity. "Canadians are more knowledgeable". No they're not. Just far more arrogant.

The truth to this made it an enjoyable read.

I agree. I have been and likely always will be an optimistic fan. The sky is never falling in my eyes.

The fans you refer to are what really get my spirits down.

Its okay to be unhappy, but some of the things people say are embarrassing at best and shameful at worst.

back to the exaggeration thing, I don't think we consider not winning the cup each season failure.

I could be wrong lol.  but I don't think anyone has come anywhere close to ever suggesting that on here.

Every 30 years, on the other hand, is another story.

    Or 40.

It really feels like a once-in-a-lifetime deal sometimes for sure.

And in the Leafs case once-in-two-lifetimes.

Added to that, in the many years Backlund has been here and spoken in English I have always understood his English so, I’m not convinced about the translation issue whatsoever…if it were I’m pretty sure he’d correct it immediately as it could negatively impact the contract negotiations, he hasn’t done that so I’m pretty confident in his lack of commitment to Cgy and therefore in the Trade him

sa soon as you get a good offer for him…same with Lindholm we don’t need waffles in the room we need rocks firmly committed to where they are at

Finnish is a different story, but Swedish and German are so similarly structured compared to English I cant see much getting lost in translation.

I have learned a fair bit of both and can clearly see why players like Backlund, Draisaitl, etc. speak damn near perfect English after a few years here.

Wow 1 goal in 62 games we have yourself a a goal scorer woho were on the right track LOL. So where are we heading this season with players that have 1 goal a season please tell me we are not looking to move to the bottom of the league. We couldn't even sign Phillips a Calgary boy would rather leave the city he loves I wonder why? I know ppl on this forum have the class all full but even this forum must see we are hitting the bottom of the barrel. We have lost every quality player we have picked in the last 7 yr MrT gone JH gone Looch gone Lindy gone every one wanting to move Hanifin because we know he will not resign here as well where does that leave us next yr we lose our first round pick and we will be picking top 6 which will go to MTL. I don't know about you guys but I have lost any faith I had in Conny.

This off season is a shot of reality for sure but I think you're overselling the urgency a bit.

May be a tough season but the fact Lindholm isn't signed or traded yet isn't a sky-is-falling scenario.

Knee-jerk reactions almost always make the team worse.
