I would be shocked if Ortio wasn't starting tomorrow.
  2. I still wouldn't do it. Kessel is the type pf player that you have to give special treatment too, and that doesn't work with the way this team is being built. I want player who want to win, not just players who like to play hockey. Kessel reminds me in a way of Brett Hull, great goal scroer, but didn't like to practice, didn't like the media, almost had issues with staying in shape. Hull did win two Cups, but he wasn't the leader or counted on to be the main offensive weapon on either of those teams. In Dallas you had Modano and Nieuwendyk, Lehetinen and Carbonneau, who were the leaders of the team and Hull was just allowed to do his thing. Same thing in Detroit where they had guys like Shanahan, Fedorov, Lidstrom, Yzerman, Robitaille, Larionov and Chelios. Hull was surrounded by some of the greatest players of all timeso his deficiencies as a player and a leader were masked by great teammates. Kessel in Calgary would be the best player and looked too, to be the guy. That's not what Kessel is, if you want to have success with Kessel in your lineup he has to be a roe player, not the number one option. IMO bringing Kessel into this team would set the rebuild back, and I am not sure it would get on track while he was on the team.
  3. I am really missing capgeek.com already, what a great website. It is harder to be informed on these discussions on players.

  4. Kessel is a great goal scorer there is no doubt about that, but I wouldn't want him anywhere near this team. First there is the cost, it will take more to land Kessel than what the Senators paid for Bobby Ryan, which was Silverberg (2nd round pick in 2009), Stefan Noesen (1st round pick in 2011) and a 2014 1st round pick (Nick Ritchie). My guess is that it take something like Baertschi, Klimchuk, a 2015 1st and a 2016 1st. Second we will have his cap hit of $8mill for the rest of this season and 7 seasons after that. Which isn't a huge issues except for the fact that he is not known for being in great shape, you have to wonder how long his body will hold up if he refuses to do the necessary work outs. There are some great scorers out there that are more interested in making their money and scoring goals than they are winning, I put Kessel and Ovechkin in that category and I would bet my house that neither will ever win a cup.

I agree. I really thought Ramo would get the start tomorrow. Maybe Hiller has lights out numbers against the 'Yotes.
  6. Martinez wouldn't be a top 4 player on this team. Regehr would be on the second pairing with Russell, his skating is lacking and getting worse. Muzzin and Brodie are fairly equal. I would give the edge to Muzzin defensively, but Brodie is improving significantly and quickly. Offensively the edge goes to Brodie.
  7. If Brodie was on the Kings he would be playing alongside of Doughty on the top pairing.

Sounds like Hiller will start on Friday vs. Nashville. First time a goalie will get back to back starts. Hiller has been impressive and has earned the start.
  9. Great job with Ask a Flame, Flames Giveaway and chat sections. Great additions to the board

Just because Ortio is in a one way contract next year doesn't mean he is slated to be the backup, he still has a lot to prove. Hopefully he can get himself back on track soon and show that season to season consistency that Calgary wants to see from him. If Ramo keeps playing the way he has to start the year he will be re-signed.

I still think that if we can get Can Ward on the cheap it could be a very good pick up. I heard on the NHL Network Radio that Carolina doesn't employ a goalie coach and that a lot of Ward's issues over the last few years are technical issues, as well as injury related. Ward hasn't had a goalie coach since junior. First thing Calgary has to do is hire a goalie coach, which they are in the process of doing.

Ortio still needs time in the AHL, he has only played 47 games at the AHL level. He had a good year last year, now he has to show that he can do it again and take another step in his game. In his games in Calgary he had a .891 sv%, that is not the sv% of an NHL caliber goalie. He will get there no need to rush him. For Ortio the key will be getting into as many games as possible and backing up Ramo isn't the place to do it. From what I have read it seems like Gillies may have taken a small step backwards last year, so hopefully another year in Providence will get him back on track. Again playing more regularly in Providence will be a better spot for him to develop than backing up Ortio in the AHL.

Calgary has decided to not renew the contract of goaltending coach Clint Malarchuk.

I don't think Joey Mac is good enough to be an AHL goalie let alone an NHL goalie. Elliot, Gustavsson, Greiss, or Montoya are all significantly better options than Joey Mac, at not a huge increase of cap hit.

For me one the watermarks for deciding if a goalie is an NHL calibre goalie is a save % of at least .900. Ortio's .891 save % tells me that he isn't quite ready for NHL duty but he is close. He still needs more seasoning and he has few things he needs to work on. I am not convinced he will be a legit starter in the NHL but he will play. Ramo has been playing well, and has earned the starting job going into next year. I can see Burke targeting an experienced goalie like a Reimer giving Ortio more time to develop.

Another good start for Berra, wouldn't be surprised or upset if he gets the start on Saturday in Philly.

I am sure Flames management would rather have Ortii playing down in the AHL right now, but with Ramo injured he was the next guy up. Berra played very well in Montreal last night and earned another start, if he plays poorly in Long Island then I am sure Ortio will get a shot in Philly. We are talking about three games, its not like Ortio's development is going to be ruined if he sits for three games. Once the Olympic break comes he will be sent back down to get games with Abbotsford.

Hartley has confirmed that Berra will start tomorrow, which is the right call IMO, Berra earned it.

I am torn, I want to see Ortio play but Berra earned the start in the next game. Hartley has been rolling with the "play well and you get another start" rotation for awhile, do you abandon that now? I think Berra starts tomorrow and he if he plays well again he will get another start.
  21. Lance Bouma is quickly becoming my favorite player on this years team.

Just read on twitter that Joey MacDonald is out with concussion like symptoms after being hit in the head with a puck last week, hence Olivier Roy being called up. This also means that if Ramo is out for any length of time that Ortio could be making his NHL debut in the near future.

Apparently his name is Ilya Yezhov. He has a 2.02 GAA and a .925 save%. If Feaster was still around he would be our starting goalie next year with the "Best goalie outside of the NHL" tag.

Getting more starts is solely up to Ramo and Berra. Hartley has shown that if you play well you start the next game if you play poorly he'll give the next guy a chance. Ramo hasn't shown that he is that much better than Berra to say that he should get 80% of the starts. When you look at their numbers they are still fairly comparable.
