  1. Hossa is one of the top two way players in the NHL, he was also signed as a UFA. Gaborik was had for Matt Frattin and 2 2nds. Not near the cost of what has been rumoured for Kessel. Both Hossa and Gaborik were added to teams that were already cup contenders. Scoring wingers are available in UFA or for cheap via trade every year, there is no reason to overpay to get one.
  2. http://www.thehockeynews.com/blog/rumor-roundup-next-moves-for-maple-leafs-could-include-trades-of-phaneuf-kessel-bozak/ Kessel has a limited NTC where can name 8 teams he'll accept a trade to, I would be surprised if Calgary was on his list.
  3. I agree if a winger is your highest paid player, you have constructed your team poorly. This team is where it is this year based on hard work and team work. It has been well documented that Kessel doesn't work hard when he doesn't have the puck. Everyone has to be working hard and pulling the rope in the same direction for this team succeed.
  4. I doubt Kessel could even make it through one of Hartley's practices.
  5. Russell/Wideman play more than some teams 1st pairings. Most 2nd pairings average around 20 mins a night and most 3 pairings are around 17 mins. Not being able to roll 3 pairings effectively is going to hurt us down the stretch and into the playoffs, as the intensity ramps up. That's why we need upgrades badly. Ideally I would like to see the 1st pairing down to 23mins, 2nd pairing at 20 mins and 3rd pairing at 17mins. Baring that I would go with Giordano/Brodie at 25mins. Russell/Wideman at 20mins. And the third pairing at 15mins. I am just not sure I trust Engelland to play that many mins.
  6. I wasn't suggesting that we trade Bennett, I was just stating that that's what it would take to get OEL (sorry I am on my phone and I am not typing his full name out, though I did just type all of this and it is way longer, huh). I don't get why you keep insisting that Russell should be bumped down to the 3rd pairing is having a very good year, and I would argue that he is having a better year than Wideman. Wideman is having a good offensive year but he can be a liability defensively. Russell lacks size but more than makes up for it with smarts and heart.
  7. I think thats the first time the word conviction has been used when talking about Kessel. We scored 3 goals on 18 shots I would say we converted our chances. The 45 shots against is much more worrisome. Kessel is a defensive liability, and a soft player, he would've had zero impact on that game.
  8. Scoring goals wasn't the issue against the Kings, keeping the puck out of our own end was the issue, and Kessel won't be much help with that. I think Kessel would be the go to guy, he would be the number one offensive weapon, he would be the highest paid player, and since we have such a young team he would be an elder statesman. I just don't see Kessel working here.
  9. OEL is one of the best young defensemen in the game, any discussion in trading for him starts with Sam Bennett +, if it doesn't Don Maloney hangs up.
  10. A win tonight and Calgary can jump into 2nd in the Pacific Division.

  11. Then you would have 2 RHS playing together. I would put either one of Wideman of Franson on the 3rd pairing. IMO Russell has been our 3rd best defenseman behind Giordano and Brodie.
  12. My bigger worry is that our top 4 is playing too much. Russell and Wideman are averaging over 23 mins a night, that's a lot for a 2nd pairing. I would hate to see them worn out. Wideman still worries me in the defensive zone, he makes a few more turnovers than I would like and it could end up costing us down the stretch.

Mission accomplished. Unfortunately it'll be short lived with SJ playing the Nux next game.

That's hockey though. I believe the Flames still have the advantage though. This ride isn't over yet. Go Flames Go!!!!!

Calgary is pushing for the playoffs and they are going to play however they think will give them he best chance to win, if that means going with Ortio while he is hot, then Ramo will watch from the press box.

My guess is that they all get recalled on Monday, and that is why Ortio's spot was filled for the All Star game. The AHL All Star game is on Monday and Calgary plays on Tuesday. Bring them back on Monday to practice with the team and play on Tuesday.

See I find Ramo and Ortio have similar styles, the rely on quickness and being athletic. Where as Hiller is more of blocking goaltender that relies on positioning. With Ramo I find he gets moving around in the net too much and gets out of position too easily, he really needs to calm his game down. With Hiller, I find as long as the defense is protecting the front of the net he is fine. He is generally in the right position to make the save but he lacks a bit of the quickness to make the desperation and post to post saves. Ortio so far seems to be the combination of the two. He plays well positionally and has the athleticism and quickness to make the desperation save. He just needs to gain experience.

http://theahl.com/all-star-roster-changes-starters-named-p195898 Interesting note, the AHL put out a press release listing several players that would be unavailable for the All Star game and Ortio wasn't one of them.

I don't agree that Hiller should be the one traded. He is the only goalie we have that has proven he can be a starter in this league. He has never had a season where he has posted a SV% under .910.

Are you saying we should under inflate the pucks, to give our goaltenders the advantage?

It might come down to roster flexibility. When Ramo comes back one of Ortio, Granlund or Shore have to go down.

Hiller is too expensive to be a backup for contending team. My guess is that Gillies is a least 3 years away from NHL duty.

What teams are we going to trade Hiller or Ramo too? I don't see much of a market for Hiller, he has been pretty solid for us but on most playoff teams he is going to be a backup and with another year at $4.5mill I don't see anybody lining up to have him as their backup. Ramo has been ok, but I think there are better options out there if teams are looking for goaltending depth. I think Ramo will walk at the end of the year and either we will see another goaltender brought in or Ortio will be brought up full time.

I don't think it is fair to claim that Ortio is our best goalie based on 2 games. He is our hottest goalie at the moment, but I need to see way more of a track record to name him our best goalie.

Ortio posting a shutout last night is encouraging, but I want to see what he can do over a number of games before I am ready to say let's trade Ramo or Hiller. Lots of goalies come up from the AHL and play very well the first few games, but then once video gets around, teams will start to target weaknesses and the goalie starts to cool down. I am not saying that that is going to happen with Ortio, but I just want to see more.

I would be shocked if Ortio wasn't starting tomorrow.
