He's ranked within our number, is he not?

If we were to pick him and Iggy Jr goes next, would that PO the fans too much?

I'm really hoping we don't have to make the choice because Tij is gone or we win the lotto.

SEA would do well to go after Tij.

Right now, they are a bunch of nobodies and the name would light up the town.

Catton is better than Tij IMO. Catton is also more likely to play C in the NHL. I don’t see Tij playing C in the NHL.

  2. With what is likely going to be a top 10 pick, I think the Flames have to find a player with dynamic qualities. They just can’t play it safe.

They don’t have that top end talent in the system, no top line forwards, no first pairing defensemen. Not sure that that player will be available at 8-10 in this draft, but they need to at least take a swing at one.

I haven’t had a chance to watch the players available in this draft enough to know who to go after.

That's awesome.  Says he was born in California, but "grew up" in COL and playing in Minny.

He's a bit older, but the AHL games should give us some sense of his readiness.

Since he was not on the AHL roster by cutoff, he won't get to play in the playoffs?

    That's fair.

He should be eligible for the AHL playoffs because he is on a tryout agreement.

The rule is more there so NHL teams don’t just send all their top young players down and really shift the balance in the AHL playoffs.

  4. Miromanov continues to impress in the early going. Small sample size but he is sporting a 53.2 SAT%, while only getting 38% OZ starts. To me that is a strong indicator that he is moving the puck in the right direction and getting it out of our zone more often than not.

  5. My really basic top 16 with very little knowledge would be:

    1. Macklin Celebrini

    2. Ivan Demidov

    3. Artyom Levshunov

    4. Zayne Parekh

    5. Sam Dickinson

    6. Anton Silayev

    7. Cayden Lindstrom

    8. Cole Eiserman

    9. Carter Yakemchuk

    10. Berkly Catton

    11. Zeev Buium

    12. Konsta Helenius

    13. Tij Iginla

    14. Liam Greentree

    15. Michael Brandsegg-Nygard

    16. Adam Jiricek

  6. I would almost rather they didn't draft Tij Iginla, talk about putting an unfair amount of pressure on a kid. Drafting a kid to team where his Dad was the greatest player in Franchise history, is widely celebrated and still works for the organization, it's just asking for heartache.

If the draft falls in such a way that the Flames have no choice but to draft him, sure, but I wouldn't go into the draft looking to draft him at all costs. It has nothing to do with him as player either, because I think he will be very good, I just think the risk of it going bad is infinitely higher in Calgary than anywhere else.

    This is awesome news.

I love the work Conroy has done to rebuild the defensive depth, an area that was a concern before Zadorov, Tanev and Hanifin left. There is still more work to be done, but it looks there are some players in the pipeline.

  8. It is going to be really interesting to see where Demidov goes in the draft. How many teams are going to be scared off by the lack of viewings and games against peer talent? Michkov fell to 7th last year, not all because of the Russian factor, he also is under contract till 2026. Demidov is under contract till 2025.

We also have Denis Grebeshkov scouting in Russia, wonder how that will impact this draft for Calgary.

I would have preferred they never call him up to be honest. I agree, he needs to gain a step. I think he's played solid and just been a bit snake bitten in terms of his results. But you can see his foot speed and strength get exposes a bit at this level. Quite a few pucks a game where if he could get there, he'd get more chances and/or increase the quality of chances. Can get knocked off his spot a bit too easy now, and doesn't have that agility yet to get to open space which is really where he needs to be for his shot.

He's played solid though so I don't think there should be troubling signs, but he's really got to just work on getting stronger/quicker in his initial stride I think to reach his potential.

He should work with whomever Zary worked with.

For sure, I think he has the ability and it shouldn’t be too big of a problem for him to get stronger and quicker.

Zary and Pospisil both have improved their skating dramatically since their draft years. I didn’t think Pospisil would get much of a chance at the NHL because his skating was lacking.

  10. Personally I would send Coronato back to the AHL, now that Pospisil is back from suspension. He isn’t ready, I would have preferred that they called up Schwindt last time instead of Coronato. Leave him there for the remainder of the season and let him dominate, have a good run in the playoffs. Next year I think he makes a strong push to make the roster.

  11. It could just be me, but it looks like Coronato needs to find another step if he wants to be more productive at this level. You can see that he is willing to work for the puck, and thinks the game fairly well, he just looks a step behind. Hopefully he can work on this in the offseason.

  12. It’s pretty interesting that in his first two games as a Flame Miromanov played 18:59 and 20:26 minutes, third in each game behind Andersson and Weegar. Seems he is gaining the trust of Huska.

I missed the game against Carolina, but the game in Florida I thought he played well. Seemed to have a good knack for when to jump up and when to stay back, made a few nice passes out of the zone, stayed controlled in the defensive zone. Didn’t really do anything flashy, but played a simple game for the most part. I did like that he seems to have a shooting mentality from the point.

That's a total cost of almost 5 million.

That's poor value for a 3rd rounder IMO. Also think the GM might have been a bit busy to try and pull that off....

Not to mention it would have taken up their last retention slot, which would have tied their hands on any deals today and at the draft.

Cheap add. Probably a player they like.

Book on him is physicality which I know is a skillset Conroy values. I thikn this is more about that than an upside play

    .

It really seems like a Conroy has a vision of pairing offensive defensemen with physical stay at home defenders.

Interesting D pairings. I'm surprised by the Kylington Muromanov pairing.

Feels very high risk, high reward

Yeah, it will be interesting for sure. I will say Kylington’s game has calmed down a lot since he came back, making much better decisions.

I wonder if the Flames have to look at Sharangovich at C long term. He has held his own, he has been an impressive 200 foot player this season.

    It's a sideways move.

MEP never was able to crack the lineup.

I don't know this kid will either.

    Both are listed as C's.

MEP is a winger, he hasn’t played C in the AHL that I know of.

I am guessing that Rooney is getting traded, which means a C from the Wranglers will be called up, so the Wranglers will be short a C. Not too mention that Zary was playing C there and got called up.

  17. Wonder how the d-pairings will shape out once Miromanov arrives.

    Kylington-Andersson

    Weegar-Miromanov

    Hanley-Pachal

Pachal has been a really nice pickup, he is steady and gives a nice physical presence to the bottom pairing.

I am excited to see what Miromanov can do. Big RHS defenseman with a big shot. He only transitioned to defense in junior.
