    I get it.

I don't agree with it is what I'm saying.  I have no idea what the Devils offered so i'm not trying to suggest the Flames are doing anything wrong. If the idea is it has to be Mercer or you move on then IMO the Flames are making a mistake.  For example if the flames were offered Hotlz and said no that be a mistake IMO.

If it were me, I would not be happy to have Markstrom here for 2 more years if you are getting good trade offers now. Set a high price sure but don't make it unreasonable.

I am not super high on Holtz so if he is the return and we have to retain cap, then I am passing.

I get it's because we like him, and there are rumors the Flames really wanted him in that draft, but I think your dreaming if you think the Devils are going to trade Mercer to the Flames for Markstrom and/or Hanfin. When was the last time a good young top 6 forward was traded for an aging goalie or a pending UFA?

If that's your price I don't think you are trading with the Devils

Oh I agree. If they are looking to make a deal, then Conroy will need to look at less established players and/or prospects from the Devils.

My point is more that with Markstrom they don’t have to trade him today, and as such they can set their price high and make teams come up to that price.

Tanev and Hanifin there is a time limit on making a trade, so they have to be somewhat flexible in setting a minimum price for them and make a move when you are comfortable with that you aren’t going to get a better return than that minimum level.

I would think they're not reluctant to do it ..it just has to make sense ..  they've never been shy to buy out a player and that's probabaly been way higher $ overall..  last time they retained was David Rittich to Toronto ..  but they only have 3 spots and this would tie one up for 2 more years ..

I'd suspect the return and the retain go hand in hand .. NJ wants us to retain the return just went up.. id be wanting a significant roster player on top of the pick and prospects.. at the very least a Dawson Mercer or similar

And also ..Calgary is in the driver's seat on this one.. they're not actively trying to move him.. but they're open if the offer is right.. there's no deadline, so meet our price or no deal

That might be the sticking point as I doubt Mercer is available, especially after they lost McLeod for the rest of his career most likely. I doubt the Devils are moving anyone from their top 9 at this point.

As you said the Flames can set their price and if nobody matches it, they just keep him.

Friedman on the Flames from 32 Thoughts today:

Devils and the Flames have been looking at each other for a while.

Flames and Devils did go down the path on Markstrom. Says he feels the package was close but retention was the issue. Says Flames have only retained 1 time in their history and says most in the league know that isn't something they like to do.

He's not ready to say it's dead (only takes 1 call) but he's been told the Devils have moved on.

Know they can get a 2nd for Tanev but still looking to get a first.

Not sure where things are with Hanifin

As much as I complain about the ownership’s unwillingness to rebuild, I will say that they have shown the willingness to spend money to win. So it’s always been odd that they are unwilling to retain salary in trades. I do think part of it is the fact that the Flames have been up against the cap for quite awhile making it very difficult to retain cap in trades.

In a Markstrom trade, if you are going to retain cap you had better be getting a really good return. I am not sure that Holtz is the right return, for me to retain cap for this year and 2 years after.

Yes and no, don't think it's this straightforward.  Part of the reason Jarome popped after his draft year was Shane Doan moved on. Iginla moved into his role and took off.

I think good players on bad teams can be just as misleading because even on bad teams someone has to score. I'd also take a look at the Rockets because it's not like Tij is on his own there.

I'm not really for or against drafting Tij but I think he has reached overrated status here. I also find it interesting that for years there has been angst about drafting left shot wingers and now there is a big push to draft one. I think Tij has a chance to be a really good pro but I personally don't see Jarome in there when I watch him.

I agree. Tij is going to be a good player, and I am not against drafting him, but if we package picks to move up I think there are going to be better players available.

Also we shouldn’t be comparing Tij to Jarome if we are looking at drafting him. We have to compare Tij to the other players available. Who his Dad is has nothing to do with who Tij is, and you have to take that out of the equation. Maybe if 2 players are close then you can use bloodlines as a tie breaker, as that player will have a good idea of what takes to be a pro.

Back on topic a bit this is the right draft to move up if the opportunity presents itself, but it is very difficult to trade into the top 10 or higher.

Tij is going in the top 10 but even if we are like 15-10 and a later 1st could be packed together to move up and nab Tij…this is where moving Hanifin and Markstrom should nab a coup of

extra late 1st rounders to get into a spot to draft Tij

in an ideal world I’d like to be drafting Tij, another Ctr and 2 D in the 1st round but I’m not

sure that would be possible…I’d also settle for a top prospect Ctr and D from trading Marky and Hanifin along with 2 more 1st hopefully draft Tij and a couple of D in the 1st round

adding 2 more 1st rounders this year would be good and more likely than next year as 2025 draft is gonna be kinda like 2023 where teams

will hold on to them…also, this buffers incase Mlt takes ours this year we would Still hold 3 first rounders along with the possibility of a top C and D prospect that would be with more than holding ont to Hanifin I think.

IMO Iginla isn’t a top 10 pick, just outside of the top 10 for sure. I like the idea of drafting Iginla for the nostalgia and everything, but I would like to aim higher. I also would much rather use a high 1st on a center or defense.

Also this draft falls off after 20, so I can’t see too many teams valuing late 1sts, and it sounds like teams see those as the same value as 2nd rounders.

  7. Calgary should try and buy low on Adam Boqvist. 23 years old, RHD, 8th overall pick in 2018. Signed at $2.6m for this year and next. He hasn't worked out in Columbus and they might be looking to move on.

Thre is going to be some openings on the blueline shortly and it wouldn't be the worst idea to look at buying low on some upside on the blueline.

  8. Goalies don’t generally generate huge returns in trades, combine that with Markstrom’s age and contract and I just don’t see the Flames getting a return that is worth it.

They are better off having a reliable starter and vet between the pipes while they go through the retool and to help mentor Wolf when he comes up.

2 years at $1m. Even if he is a 4th line energy guy that is still a good signing.

I have long been a Pospisil fan, he is been great so far this year and has brought some much needed energy to this team.

  10. Nick Bonino asked to have his contract terminated instead of going to the AHL, so he will be a free agent tomorrow. Wonder if Calgary looks at him on a league minimum deal. There is a definite need at center. Though he might be looking for a playoff team.

Looks like Pachal will play right away. Which is a positive because it means less Osterle.

Anything is better than Oesterle, one of the worst defensemen I can recall playing for the Flames in recent memory.

  12. Ruzicka reminds me of Joe Colborne. Size and skill, but doesn’t use either often enough. No urgency in his game.

He might get more offensive opportunities once Lindholm is traded, because there will be a spot for a center in the top 6.

  13. I thought maybe Jones would be the next forward up, but Schwindt is a guy who can play on the 4th line and play C/RW.

With some of these guys coming up to RFA, you kind of want to see what we have in these young players.

Projected lines against EDM.  Notice Klapka and Coronato in, Dube out.  Pospisil week to week at this point, but could be shorter.

    Huberdeau-Lindholm-Sharangovich

    Zary-Kadri-Coronato

    Mangiapane-Backlund-Coleman

    Greer-Ruzicka-Klapka

    Weegar-Andersson

    Hanifin-Tanev

    Oesterle-Gilbert

    Vladar

Why are we still playing Oesterle? He has been by far the worst player on the team this year, he isn’t an NHL player. Gilbert, DeSimone, Solovyov, Kuznetsov would all be better choices than Oesterle.

Because you can. That time is there, so use it. Same as Vrana. Conditioning, waivers to give him more time.

I'm not quite sure why folks expect Kylington to be right back on the roster. I'm not saying it can't happen, just that I'd be extremely surprised. Don't understand why it is becoming an expectation.

I guess the difference is that with Vrana it was substance abuse and there has been no mention of substance abuse with Kylington, it has been health related.

They had the option to put Rooney on a conditioning stint as well, but he went straight to waivers. Just seems less likely that he would get claimed if they put Kylington on waivers, instead of letting him play in a few conditioning games. Colorado and Washington each have two scouts at the game tonight, I am guessing to watch Kylington.

I expect that he'll go through waivers and will clear. Similar to Vrana in Detroit. No one is claiming a troubled player that the team is working with.

Then why not put him on waivers instead of putting him on a conditioning loan?

I really don't suspect there is any form of fast-tracking to get him on the big club. I'd be quite shocked to see him in the NHL any time soon.

Certainly have to wonder if he's pushing it to get to another contract.

as per the CBA he is going to be in the NHL or on waivers within the week.
