The difference, as you know, is that it's the scout's job to convince you of draft order.

And the scout is saying "I'm not doing that"

And then the GM picks the guy he was impressed by in the area he was assigned to.

Speculation like speculating the earth is round.

No he isn't he is saying he doesn't have to convince Conroy of the draft order because he was part of the process.

i just listened to a direct interview with Conroy on why they picked Honzek man, and that's pretty much what he said.   Just like this year, he's being pretty clear about a list.

Anyway, I think we all have some level of understanding on Honzek, which we are expressing differently.

I personally empathise with the "off the board" phrase, but, I understand why others don't....it's definitely not meant to offend people, especially on something that I don't think anyone is that far off on.

Each team sits down with their own scouts and makes their own list and puts the prospects in order, generally the top 80 or so prospects. So when Conroy talks about drafting from a list it is the teams list, and has nothing to do with MacKenzie, Pronman or any media list out there. There is a reason those guys are in the media and not working for teams. McKenzie's list is based off a poll he does with about 10 NHL scouts, which is a really small sample size, it gives you a rough idea, but it is barely a concensus. Pronman , Button and the rest of the amateur scouts out there are mostly going off of game film and don't travel to see every prospect in person. Like I said if you are using their analysis to say that a team went off the board, well they work in media for a reason, if they were any good at scouting they would be working for an NHL team.

  3. Decided to follow suit.

    9. Artyom Levshunov: He won’t be available here.

    29. Jett Luchanko: He is most likely gone at this point.

    41. Dean Letourneau: Took a swing on upside.

    64. Julius Miettinen: A safer pick, good size at center, limited offensive upside.

    74. Justin Poirier: Another swing at upside.

    84. George Carter: Highest ranked goalie left on the board.

I'd personally be more cautious scouting off highlight videos but that's just me.

From what i've seen I don't think his talent and numbers warrant a top 5 pick. Maybe 10 yes but that's where the injuries come into play. IMO he's a pick more based on projection that what he has done/is now because I dont' see the level of offence in relation to other players available in the top 10.

I think he's in the top 10 more based on what teams think he can. Teams are alwas looking for size down the middle so if you can get size plus any amount of skill I think it creates a situation where you are reaching. It's just not the direction I would prefer to go.

Again I don’t disagree, more playing devils advocate, but I think we starting to see a trend with an emphasis back on size. I think size has always been important, but I think teams are starting to put more value back on size.

Now I think this applies mostly to defense, but I do think you will see more emphasis put on size across the board.

For me I think Calgary really needs to start emphasizing speed. It’s a dimension that is sorely lacking top to bottom in the organization. Calgary was a below average team when it comes to speed last season.

If you can get that top end speed and combine it with size and talent you have a deadly combination.

Lindstrom gives me big=good vibes. I'm not going to deny he is talented, he for sure is. Does his talent match a top 10 pick? I'm not so sure myself. Reminds me a lot of Micheal Rasmussen.

Not a bad player to have and size down the middle is something all teams are looking for so I get it but it's not the direction i'd go, especially when you consider injuries.

I don’t disagree, but for me I think the injuries are the biggest factor. I think the skating ability and talent are there it’s more is he able to put it together and stay healthy.

I see him closer to a Byfield light. Rasmussen wasn’t a great skater and was always going to be a net front scorer, Lindstrom has more dimensions to his game than Rasmussen.

If this top 8 plays out then I would take either Tij or Yakemchuk.

    I would go:

    Catton

    Helenius

    Iginla

    Yakemchuk

    Eiserman

I think Helenius is getting really underrated around here. He is a really smart player.

He's ranked within our number, is he not?

If we were to pick him and Iggy Jr goes next, would that PO the fans too much?

I'm really hoping we don't have to make the choice because Tij is gone or we win the lotto.

SEA would do well to go after Tij.

Right now, they are a bunch of nobodies and the name would light up the town.

Catton is better than Tij IMO. Catton is also more likely to play C in the NHL. I don’t see Tij playing C in the NHL.

  8. With what is likely going to be a top 10 pick, I think the Flames have to find a player with dynamic qualities. They just can’t play it safe.

They don’t have that top end talent in the system, no top line forwards, no first pairing defensemen. Not sure that that player will be available at 8-10 in this draft, but they need to at least take a swing at one.

I haven’t had a chance to watch the players available in this draft enough to know who to go after.

That's awesome.  Says he was born in California, but "grew up" in COL and playing in Minny.

He's a bit older, but the AHL games should give us some sense of his readiness.

Since he was not on the AHL roster by cutoff, he won't get to play in the playoffs?

    That's fair.

He should be eligible for the AHL playoffs because he is on a tryout agreement.

The rule is more there so NHL teams don’t just send all their top young players down and really shift the balance in the AHL playoffs.

  10. Miromanov continues to impress in the early going. Small sample size but he is sporting a 53.2 SAT%, while only getting 38% OZ starts. To me that is a strong indicator that he is moving the puck in the right direction and getting it out of our zone more often than not.

  11. My really basic top 16 with very little knowledge would be:

    1. Macklin Celebrini

    2. Ivan Demidov

    3. Artyom Levshunov

    4. Zayne Parekh

    5. Sam Dickinson

    6. Anton Silayev

    7. Cayden Lindstrom

    8. Cole Eiserman

    9. Carter Yakemchuk

    10. Berkly Catton

    11. Zeev Buium

    12. Konsta Helenius

    13. Tij Iginla

    14. Liam Greentree

    15. Michael Brandsegg-Nygard

    16. Adam Jiricek

  12. I would almost rather they didn't draft Tij Iginla, talk about putting an unfair amount of pressure on a kid. Drafting a kid to team where his Dad was the greatest player in Franchise history, is widely celebrated and still works for the organization, it's just asking for heartache.

If the draft falls in such a way that the Flames have no choice but to draft him, sure, but I wouldn't go into the draft looking to draft him at all costs. It has nothing to do with him as player either, because I think he will be very good, I just think the risk of it going bad is infinitely higher in Calgary than anywhere else.

    This is awesome news.

I love the work Conroy has done to rebuild the defensive depth, an area that was a concern before Zadorov, Tanev and Hanifin left. There is still more work to be done, but it looks there are some players in the pipeline.

  14. It is going to be really interesting to see where Demidov goes in the draft. How many teams are going to be scared off by the lack of viewings and games against peer talent? Michkov fell to 7th last year, not all because of the Russian factor, he also is under contract till 2026. Demidov is under contract till 2025.

We also have Denis Grebeshkov scouting in Russia, wonder how that will impact this draft for Calgary.

I would have preferred they never call him up to be honest. I agree, he needs to gain a step. I think he's played solid and just been a bit snake bitten in terms of his results. But you can see his foot speed and strength get exposes a bit at this level. Quite a few pucks a game where if he could get there, he'd get more chances and/or increase the quality of chances. Can get knocked off his spot a bit too easy now, and doesn't have that agility yet to get to open space which is really where he needs to be for his shot.

He's played solid though so I don't think there should be troubling signs, but he's really got to just work on getting stronger/quicker in his initial stride I think to reach his potential.

He should work with whomever Zary worked with.

For sure, I think he has the ability and it shouldn’t be too big of a problem for him to get stronger and quicker.

Zary and Pospisil both have improved their skating dramatically since their draft years. I didn’t think Pospisil would get much of a chance at the NHL because his skating was lacking.
