Will have to see if anything else involved, kinda disappointing that Walker gets a first and Tanev only gets one with a bad contract, but can't control what the buyers will do, maybe the Flames get more if they waited it out a little longer, but risky with that player.

Philly had to take Johansen to get the 1st, so there is your bad contract.

  2. With Andersson, Weegar and Pachal as the only defensemen signed for next year it makes sense to add some veteran depth to what is most likely going to be a younger defensive core next year. I would guess that Kylington is going to get an extension soon. That leaves a spot in the top 4 and a spot on the bottom pairing.

I believe the Tanev proposal "that included a 1st" was from Toronto. It likely meant taking Reaves.

Reaves is one of the worst players in the league, if that was on the table, the Flames were wise to say no. He doesn't bring enough to the table to justify his role as an enforcer. There are also very few players in the league that will take him on, making him redunant.

Devils with even league average goaltending right now are likely comfortably in the playoffs. Vezina calibre?? who knows.

Wonder how much pressure is on Fitz right now. That ownership group can't be happy hearing the rumors of being that close to acquiring a goalie like Markstrom as their season craters. Will he feel it enough to pull the trigger is now the question

Can’t imagine he is too happy hearing every NHL insider say that the Devils have identified Markstrom as the goalie they want and that they will be willing to go into the summer to get him. Shifts the power back to Conroy in the negotiations. Have to think that if Calgary opens it up at the draft the price for Markstrom goes up as well.

At this point we can call Kuzmenko a cap dump, so how many more of those do we need.

I think Kuzmenko was a calculated gamble. He is a guy who is coming off 39 goals, the talent is there, you hope that he can regain that form and click with Huberdeau.

Ceci is a 3rd pairing defensemen that is terrible defensively and offensively, zero upside with taking on his contract.

Simple question:  Where can I find the full list of players under control, including draft picks?  CapFriendly only includes signed players, and NHL.com only NHL roster players...?

On capfriendly, if you go to a teams page, look for a link that says Reserve List. This will show all the players that the team has rights too.

32 Thoughts: A note on every team to open trade deadline week (sportsnet.ca)

The tidbits.  New Jersey will circle back in the offseason if a deal with Markstrom can't be made this week.  Holtz has been dangled, Mercer has been a no go for them.

Teams not valuing late firsts as much this year.  Could've taken a first for Tanev but included a bad contract.

And with Hanifin, Lightning top choice for the player but if it was easy it would've been done by now.  So when do they reach the point of just dealing him wherever they get the best offer.

Markstrom's disappointment more to do with being approached about a move and the team backing down.

Apparently is was Edmonton offering a 1st for Tanev, but Calgary would’ve had to take a roster player. I thought I had read that it was a player with term as well that they had to take to get a 1st. I think Conroy was smart to take the Dallas deal.

  8. Knight would be a high upside gamble type return. The biggest issue I would have with him, is I don’t think you can go with Knight and Wolf in the NHL next year. I will say I am not 100% sold on Wolf’s ability at the NHL level, I am not saying he can’t do it, just that the games I have seen him in he looks not just small in the net he looks tiny.

The problem with a Hanifin trade is trying to shoehorn him into teams that he is willing to re-sign with. Those teams either have no cap space and/or no picks or prospects.

He also has a an 8 team no trade list, I am assuming that he has submitted that already, and I am assuming that 6 of those teams are the other Canadian teams.

  9. I think Florida will try to get Forsling resigned he has been great for them. I can see Montour wanting to get paid based on the 72 points he put up last year, but he has come back to earth this year, so I could see them letting him walk.

Hanifin makes a lot of sense for Florida. I think you have to do everything you can to get Lundell in return. Mackie Samoskevich would be a good get as well.

Interesting.. 2 years left ..  stop gap center ..  I could see us claiming ..

Wouid actually make a ton of sense ..

He doesn't count against the cap yet,

We need a center .. we likely would have to get one in UFA anyway .. the kids need to play with somebody with skill

We have the room especially considering we are about to move out 2.5-5M in hanifin ..

Waivers bypasses his NTC.. and at either of the next 2 TDLs any pick you flip him for is a win..

Not to mention.. add a skilled Russian to play with Kuzmenko

I don’t think he is the type of player you want around your young players, IMO I wouldn’t bring him in. Not to mention I wouldn’t want to take that cap hit.

  11. Trading him now or trading him at the draft, doesn’t change much, except at the draft you will most likely have more suitors.

As of right now NJ is the only team that is said to have interest, kind of hard to drive up the price when you only have one team competing for Markstrom.

So Conroy has to decide if NJ’s offer is the best offer he is going to get or wait till the draft and see if he gets better offers then, or if just holding onto Markstrom is what is best for the Flames.

The other side is that Markstrom has a full NMC, so he gets to decide when, where or if he gets traded.

It's starting to sound like the Markstrom to NJ deal wasn't quite as close as it seemed. So if NJ wasn't willing to pay the price 2 weeks ago I can't imagine their recent slide is going to make them more likely to pay up but as Friedman says it only takes 1 call and their is still time.

Wondering if Conroy overplayed his hand here.

The problem is there are only so many true number 1 goalies in the league, but teams are learning that you don’t necessarily need a number 1 to win a Cup, so you aren’t going to get a huge return for a goalie anymore. That being said teams that do have the rare true number 1 goalie don’t want to part with them easily because they are hard to find, and they do help you get to the playoffs.

So it creates this odd push/pull in value.

  13. According to Seravalli the Preds aren't moving Saros as long as they are in a playoff spot. That takes some leverage away from NJ in converstations regarding Markstrom. That being said I think a Markstrom trade is more of an off-season trade.

Four games between now and the deadline, I am not sure it makes a whole lot of sense for the Flames to sit any of their assets, maybe on the 7th they can sit Tanev and Hanifin.
