  1. I don't think Joey Mac is good enough to be an AHL goalie let alone an NHL goalie.

Elliot, Gustavsson, Greiss, or Montoya are all significantly better options than Joey Mac, at not a huge increase of cap hit.

  2. For me one the watermarks for deciding if a goalie is an NHL calibre goalie is a save % of at least .900. Ortio's .891 save % tells me that he isn't quite ready for NHL duty but he is close. He still needs more seasoning and he has few things he needs to work on. I am not convinced he will be a legit starter in the NHL but he will play.

Ramo has been playing well, and has earned the starting job going into next year.

I can see Burke targeting an experienced goalie like a Reimer giving Ortio more time to develop.

  3. 1st people want to blame berra for most of his loses and get a better goalie, and now that we have Ortio that is just plain outplaying berra(AHL), You guys are wanting to ride berra. Ortio is above the curve on all of our goalies, but he's still only 22, He needs game time not sitting on the bench time.

If Ortio doesnt see a game, I hardly see this as a positive, Sure he gets to sit in net for practice's and such, But as every hockey player as ever said, practices are not game speed whether you want to try and emulate that or not.

Ortio wants to be with the flames so do alot of the Heat players, But if they're not going to get ice time, its a waste of time being up.

I am sure Flames management would rather have Ortii playing down in the AHL right now, but with Ramo injured he was the next guy up. Berra played very well in Montreal last night and earned another start, if he plays poorly in Long Island then I am sure Ortio will get a shot in Philly.

We are talking about three games, its not like Ortio's development is going to be ruined if he sits for three games. Once the Olympic break comes he will be sent back down to get games with Abbotsford.

  4. I am torn, I want to see Ortio play but Berra earned the start in the next game. Hartley has been rolling with the "play well and you get another start" rotation for awhile, do you abandon that now? I think Berra starts tomorrow and he if he plays well again he will get another start.

  5. Just read on twitter that Joey MacDonald is out with concussion like symptoms after being hit in the head with a puck last week, hence Olivier Roy being called up. This also means that if Ramo is out for any length of time that Ortio could be making his NHL debut in the near future.

  6. We need a goaltender that can do this...

Apparently his name is Ilya Yezhov. He has a 2.02 GAA and a .925 save%. If Feaster was still around he would be our starting goalie next year with the "Best goalie outside of the NHL" tag.

  7. Getting more starts is solely up to Ramo and Berra. Hartley has shown that if you play well you start the next game if you play poorly he'll give the next guy a chance.

Ramo hasn't shown that he is that much better than Berra to say that he should get 80% of the starts. When you look at their numbers they are still fairly comparable.

  8. Ramo isn't ready to ready to carry the load. He is good for a couple of games and then has a game thats not good. I like the rotation in that if a goalie has a good game he plays again.

I have never been a fan of Joey Mac, I would rather have Berra up here than Joey Mac. MacDonald is a career 3rd stringer and right now he isn't even a good AHL goalie.

I am ok with giving Ortio a brief look when the rosters expand, but I look forward to seeing him have a deep playoff run with the Heat. (I need to find a way to watch Heat playoff games).

All the trade options for goalies, Neuvirth, Khudobin, Peters, etc. are not big enough upgrades to trade for. Miller is too old and expensive to be a consideration. Can Ward is a maybe but the injury history scares me. Reimer might be the best option and that is a little sad and says a lot about what the goalie market is right now.

With that being said we will have to settle for where we are in net.

  9. Looks like Ramo will get the start against the Jets tonight. Unless he posts another sh*tout (superstitious), Berra will probably get the start against VAN and then Ramo against the Sharks.

Twitter is saying that Berra is starting tonight.

  10. Berra continues to make rookie mistakes and allows goals that are completely unacceptable in NHL. The 2nd Boston goal was prime example how can you let goal in from that angel?

Ramo hasn't made many rookie mistakes and is very calm in the net. My fav performance from him is the Chicago game he flew the night before, 1st NHL game and against the former Champs yet he came out big and calm.

Berra was the one playing in that Chicago game.

  11. I think it is funny that lots of people are jumping on Berra blaming him for the loss last night. Sure the go ahead goal was kind of crappy, but 1 goal is not enough run production to beat the Bruins.

Berra is still learning at the NHL level but keeping the Bruins to 2 goals is doing a pretty good job.

The team in front of Berra let him down last night.

Ramo gets the start next game.

  12. I noticed in the video where Berra was talking about one of his new masks, that he mentioned that the team told him he was a Calgary player and it was time to get rid of the Flames/Heat mask. Ramo also got a new mask, so it kind of seems like they will be the ones tending net till the end of the year.

I have a hard time seeing MacDonald ever playing in Calgary again, unless there is a prolonged injury to one of Ramo or Berra. If it is a game or two I could see Ortio called up just to be given a taste of the big leagues and reward him for good play in Abbotsford.

  13. Tough to blame last night on Berra, should he have saved two of those goals, probably, but he shouldn't have been put in a position to have to make a save.

Cammalleri had a terrible give away resulting in the first goal I believe. On the Sharp goal, someone missed an assignment and left Sharp wide open. On the third goal Baertschi should have had the puck cleared.

As far as Ramo goes, he will get some more playing time going forward, Calgary's schedule has been fairly spread out of late allowing Hartley to go the goalie who gives the team the best chance to win which in my mind is Berra. With some back to backs coming up I can see Ramo getting in some more games.

Ramo just looks more shaky in the games I have seen and Berra just seems to battles better and does a better job at keeping Calgary in games.

  14. The thing that impressed me the most with Berra last game was just the calmness and poise he had back there. There was never a sense of panic in his game. If he can keep that up it will be really key for this young team.

  15. I think putting Joey Mac on waivers was the best move for this team.

I kind of doubt that he will be claimed, I think he is a 3rd string goalie on most teams in the NHL.

He isn't the answer nor is a stop gap.

Reto Berra might be a longshot to be a starter but hey lets give him a shot and see what he can do, he can't be much worse than the goaltending we have received so far.

Guys like Ortio, Brossoit and Gillies are all 2-3 years away from making the jump, so we are kind of left with pinning our hopes on Ramo and Berra. Hopefully one of them can develop into a decent stop gap till one of our other prospects is ready.

  16. We already have a Gibson, his name is Gillies. Gibson is maybe one year closer, but at thw end of the day I believe Gillies will be the better goaltender

I have to disagree. I have high hopes for Gillies but at this point in time Gibson is the best goaltending prospect out there right now.

  17. The deal we should have made was for Bernier. I called for it last year and got heckled out of here because we had elite Ramo coming and Kipper was a sure fire starter this season. That was a fantastic value trade for the Leafs. We missed a huge opportunity to address our goaltending needs for a decade, for only a second round pick plus some garbage.

I would be more interested in Gibson than Scrivens. We need a goalie that can be a star. Not a stop gap (Scrivens). That said, Gibson will cost us a first round pick. That's what happens when you don't take an opportunity to address a need.

I would much rather Gibson as well, but I think it costs way more than a 1st to get him, in the end the price might be higher than what Calgary can comfortably give up. I think the hype on Gibson is about the same as Carey Price when he came out of junior, and I think it is warranted hype. He backstopped the USA team at the World Championships and the World Juniors and had impressive numbers at both; .955 SV% and 1.36 GAA in 7 games at the WJC and a .951 SV% and 1.56 GAA in 5 games at the WC. To put those kind of numbers up as a 19 year at the WC and beat out Ben Bishop for the starting job is very impressive. He currently has a .955 SV% and a 1.44 GAA in 6 games in the AHL this year.

This kid is the real deal. It would be hard pill to swallow but I would give up a 1st and Baertschi plus one of our goalies for this kid, and I am not even sure that it is enough. I think he is franchise goalie and I am not sure Calgary currently has franchise type goalie in the system. Gillies would be the closest but I am not sure he is on that level.

The reason I mentioned Scrivens is because he would be significantly cheaper to acquire and I think he is better than Ramo, MacDonald or Berra. I think he is capable of starting he just isn't an elite goalie, his numbers in the NHL the last few years aren't all that bad and at 27 he is just entering his prime.

I am just not sure how many options are out there outside of MIller and Elliot, which are two that I would want no part of.
