  1. Not the greatest example tbh…they have concussion spotters to prevent something like that from happening. Is a player who forces themselves to return prematurely or who is still concussed tough or just incredibly stupid? It’s a bit of both but more of the latter. To me Monny played through some tough injuries but the way he handled them was completely idiotic and it’s derailed his career. He sabotaged himself. Tough body , weak mind I guess.
  2. Such a shame. I remember when he got his 1st wrist surgery done, the Flames stated they weren’t aware and it all makes a ton of sense now. Monny is a bit of an idiot to be honest lol
  3. “Even as the Flames brain trust was having daily conversations about pulling him, he kept it to himself. Teammates were in the dark, too. “It was an eye-opening experience to see someone play that well with that many injuries, and not ever say that much about it,” Travis Hamonic said. “I mean, you’d see a hot-pack every once in a while, but never really understanding the extent of it. Quite frankly you’re not even aware … because he keeps his mouth shut and goes about his business.” Heres another quote from a 2018 article from The Athletic. It’s pretty damning , Monny even admits to not taking proper care of himself. He honestly doesn’t come across as the smartest guy around, I’ll post the link to the full article. As great as Monny was he was a straight up liability. Apparently Monahan just didn’t understand how important wrists and hips are to a hockey player? Great player but he’s not the brightest athlete around. Here’s the link if it works for u https://theathletic.com/515160/2018/09/13/after-four-separate-offseason-operations-sean-monahan-embraces-new-approach/
  4. Honestly JJ it’s what disappointed me the most about Monny. I really liked the guy. I can find the articles and quotes where BT states they were informed only a few days before he went under the knife. It’s bizarre! Monny did the same thing with his wrists…didn’t tell anyone until surgery was required. Straight up I’ll find the timeline of his injuries but there are multiple quotes of the Flames being caught off guard by the severity of his injuries. The BT quote already states Monahan is a stubborn player who chose to play injured without notifying anyone. Really a shame , I would have liked if Monahan could have been a Flame for life but he’s just too much of a liability.
  5. Nope! Not in this case. This is on Monahan. “Sean is one that plays through a lot of stuff without telling a lot of people,” Treliving said. “ This is my issue with Monahan. He has a history of not communicating his ailments until it’s too late. His most recent hip surgery? Flames didn’t even know the extent until days prior to them scheduling the operation. Sure there’s a shared responsibility on the organization to take care of its players but these are PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES…they know when their not 100%. They have a responsibility to take the utmost care of themselves as you know they are making millions of $! You could say Monny was pressured into playing through them but still it’s his responsibility to take care of himself. No one can do that for him. What good are you if you’re becoming a detriment to the team? Does that make you a good “teammate”? Monny could have easily mitigated his injuries but he CHOSE not too on MULTIPLE occasion until it was too late, ultimately he jeopardized himself and his own career. Like I said I like Monny, he’s a good character guy but he could have clearly avoided many of his surgeries by simply being forthcoming.
  6. Every GM has a list of mistakes they’ve made. I think overall BT has done a good job mitigating his miss steps. I like Monny but Monnys stubborness became a major liability to this team. He wasn’t forthcoming about a lot of his injuries to the point where he’s forced so many surgeries it’s derailed his career. It’s hard to trade a player who likely won’t pass a physical. I honestly blame Sean Monahan for his own current state of affairs. BT isn’t perfect but he’s proven he can be in the upper echelon of GMs in the NHL. I still consider BT a strong asset to this team, we’ll have to see how all these changes turn out before we pass judgement on this wild off season.
  7. All I’m saying is unless it’s to close a blockbuster trade…there’s no immediate need to trade Hanifin. We get booted in the 2nd round and it’s essentially Hanifin fault? Oilers put up no less than 5 goals against us every game of that series, that’s on the team. I just don’t see him as this glaring liability that requires him to be traded immediately. Someone had just posted a GIF of some guy banging his head against a wall in reference to our off season and the knee jerk reaction fans are having to just trade everyone….even Harvey the Hound. Regardless, the 48 pts he did provide won’t be easy to replace, that’s nothing to scoff at from a young defence man. Compare his value to say Darnell Nurse…prone to gaffes as well, isn’t putting up close to 50pts and is over $9M in cap…is Hanifin really that bad?
  8. One hundred. I like our current group of D men, good balance of mobility , size and skill right now plus our D core is crazy young! We’d be the oldest team in the league without our current D core lol…I agree with u in that we can’t just keep adding forwards by subtracting defence men. Sure our D didn’t play well in that 2nd round but to be fair we weren’t 100% healthy. If we can get can get a little more scoring from our backend this season , we shouldn’t be too far removed from last years success.
  9. Hanifin definitely makes his gaffes but I honestly felt he cleaned a lot of that up under Sutter. It’s easy to forget Hanifin is one of the smoothest skating D out there , outside of Kylington he’s probably our best skating D. Hanifin isn’t scaring anyone but he’s solid and dependable, sure he has lapses but not enough to consider him a complete liability plus he’s on a great contract…not too many #1 D men under $5M. I’d say Zadarov is more a liability than Hanifin, plus Zado takes some poor ill timed penalties. I’m not against trading Hanifin just think think he gets more of a bad rep then he deserves. It’s easy to forget Hanifin is still only 25!! There aren’t many D men with his level of experience at that price point. Who exactly do we replace him with?
  10. Was going to mention how familiar this all feels..not too long ago with Gio, Hamilton, Hamonic, Brodie…even back when we had Phaneuf and J Bow. The Flames have pretty consistently been touted with having a top of not the top D core in the league. Yet it’s rarely translated on the ice. We all know what happened with Hamilton, Hamomic etc.., last years D was arguably our best group in ages statistically. This group has all the makings of an elite one that can defend and score. There’s this near impossible balance the Flames haven’t been able to find, where our D is stout but our offence is anemic. Harking back to the days where if Iginla didn’t score the Flames didn’t score but our defence was so good you could still win with only 2-3 goals. We haven’t been an “offence first” team since the 90s really, we tried it under Bill Peter’s and ended up getting swept by the pre Cup Avalanche. Will Calgary always be a defensive heavy minded team or can BT finally find that perfect balance between defence and offence ?
  11. If Scheifele becomes available for Hanifin/Andersson then of course you explore that route. I just can’t see Chev not expecting a Kings ransom in return for the Jets franchise player. If a “wants to leave” Tkachuk nets u Huberdeau, Weegar, top prospect and a 1st….I can only imagine what a “wants to stay” Scheifele would command. Hanifin/Andersson alone wouldn’t get it done. I think we regret a Andersson for Willie “Bystander” Nylander trade. Rasmus isn’t too far off Willies offensive production but he’s leagues ahead of him on the defensive side of things. I can’t see Willie Bystander fitting well under the expectations of a Sutter system. You can trust Rasmus to both shutdown and defend as well as chip in offensively and run the PP. Willie is too 1 way of a player, can’t be trusted on defence, can’t be trusted playing against the opposing teams top players. We’d lose that trade easy. I see where you’re coming from though…to land a top 6 winger will not come cheap. I’m not saying Lucic/Valimaki are our sole trade chips at the moment , just the more likely to get moved. Flames are being pegged with arguably the best defensive core in the league on paper right now. We lost the top line in the NHL for potentially the best defence. Fair trade off IMO. This team has injected a ton of new high end players who need to gel and develop chemistry if this is going to work. Defence was the bread and butter of our success last year. We all saw what happened once Tanev went down, this team was not the same. That D depth is so critical and we have it in spades at the moment. Adding Weegar is adding another potential 40pts from our back end, scoring might not be as much of a challenge that many are expecting it to be. I just think BT waits to see what he has on the ice before we start trading any of our top 6 D men, it’s already been a dramatic overhaul this past month, why not wait and see how what we have on paper translates to the ice before we further shake up this core.
  12. Not sure why so many ppl are keen on moving Hanifin…he’s still a good, young Dman on a value contract. I get the need to upgrade still at the fwd position , especially RW but I don’t think moving Hanifin now makes much sense. I think we’re more likely to see Lucic/Valimaki on the move. We could afford to lose a bottom pairing D man and pick up a guy like Stone on the cheap. I’d still love Barzal but that’s a long shot now especially with Kadri in the mix. We really need an elite puck carrier but think we are pretty much done with any major moves. There’s a lot of new chemistry this team needs to let settle.
  13. BT has shown he’s learned along the way how to better manage the assets. We still have some wiggle room with the cap, not too mention he has the wherewithal to stack 10 D men…all on 1 way deals. We all know D men are valuable currency when it comes to trades. Curious to see which D man goes and which winger we likely get in return
  14. So to those who’ve been calling for Treliving to be fired….who else would you recommend? Is there a GM out there who could have done even better than BT if they were dealt the same hand?
  15. Would be sweet!…but won’t happen without us handing over some high picks
  16. I can stomach Kadri at the $7M, that’s fair value IMO. The 7 year term is a bit rich but it’s likely he retires closer to 4-5 years so in reality the term could much easier to digest as well. Flames won this offseason tho
  17. What an off season this has been!! We have a completely different looking team. Give credit to BT for turning a disaster into opportunities that actually improve the team. I know I’m not going to like the contract terms for Kadri but this is the UFA market I suppose. Great time to be a Flames fan!!
  18. To All the haters who kept pandering to the fact he was a UFA and would walk…this HuBuds for you!!
  19. This year I actually felt this was one of our easiest paths to the Cup. Dallas and Edmonton stood in our way of the Conference final and we failed. We damn near got swept by the Oilers. Yes I know the games were close but we still lost the series 4-1. Not even close! Dallas took us to the brink..we lost Taney in that series and needed some magic from JH to win it in OT game 7. I don’t see us having a path as “easy” as this again, Vegas will be back , Canuck’s will be better and the Kings should be in the mix again. This year was one of our best chances in ages, we likely wouldn’t have got past the Avs but we should not have lost to the Oilers, not in the fashion we did Atleast.
  20. I like Sutter, he did a good job with instilling a foundation and identity to play with last year. I just hope he’s able to adjust better on the fly next season. I get the need to play with structure and within the systems but we likely won’t be scoring as much as we did last season, Flames will need to be even more solid defensively to balance out the loss of offence, hopefully Sutter and co. will be open to making more changes if required. Can’t just keep expecting to roll the same lines and expect different results.
  21. I’m glad we extended Kylington, he really took a major step last year and we don’t have anyone with his skating ability, it’s a very effective skill of his. We would have regretted trading him before seeing the full package he can develop into. Mangi is a bit pricey but he’s a 30+ goal scorer now so that’s the price. It would be great if Mangi was a better passer, he’s aggressive and can score in tight but he’s a bit one dimensional. I agree with most on here, we still need to make some upgrades and clear cap space, Kadri would have helped add to our skill and offence but don’t see that signing happening here.
  22. Skynet did not like whatever u typed lol
  23. The Tkachuk deal brought back some high end skill and some balance but our current roster isn’t striking fear in anyone at the moment. I agree not a fan of Toffoli on the top line but maybe Lindholm and Huberdeau can bring Toffs game back. Our 2nd line is solid defensively but will really lack the scoring punch. The entire 2nd line are streaky scorers…can’t depend on that! If Monny can rebound and maybe and one of the young guys really steps up (Pelletier, Ruz or Phillips) maybe that fills out that 3rd line but yeah we are weak in our bottom 6 and still lack high end skill in our top 6. If we trade Valimaki and Monny it should free up the space and maybe garner a decent return to balance out our lines. Right now as it stands , we’ve taken a step back in our forwards group.
  24. It’s a failure anytime you don’t win the Cup! Regarding our recent playoff run it , especially the 2nd Rd vs the Oilers, I feel we got out coached. Sutter did not make the necessary adjustments and losing Tanev really exposed our D. We could have won that series or Atleast performed better but we got outplayed pretty bad, in just about every area. The series wasn’t as close as some recall.
  25. No thank you. Sutter will not play William Bystander..plus it’s so dry out here..it would damage his hair lol
