Any goaltender would be rattled by the way our D has been playing, then there are the countless times the forwards have not been getting back to cover in the D zone either... Then on top of that there has been an abundance of turnovers due to sloppy passes on both ends of the ice, etc... etc... Ramo has let in some soft ones and so has Hiller... They have both also made some great saves as well, some on shots that shouldn't have been allowed to happen... As Deeds has already pointed out, throwing Ortio to the wolves with the way the team has been playing for 5 of the 6 games so far this season could easily set back his development, or worse as we've all seen happen before, ruin a goaltender with solid potential... My guess is Ramo will rebound from this, as he usually deals with the pressure after a bad game quite well... He's the one that got the spanking, but Hiller deserved it just as much... As far as Ramo's contract goes, it's a little high, but not that much over market for a goaltender that played a substantial role in getting the team as far as they went last season... It's only a one year deal, and if it was longer then we might have more reason to be more concerned about it... But at the time, it was the right thing for Treliving to do... I hope that Gillies get's the majority of the starts, and if need be Ramo will be back up with the Flames... I also think that unless Hiller really steps up, either he could be traded, or we might see him on waivers as well... A lot of us weren't too happy with the unusual move of carrying three goaltenders, but we have to realize that they were backed into a corner due to circumstance... Then there is the frustration for some that it seemed to take so long to get back to carrying two like normal, but when you remember how last season was divided into seven game segments, and the Flames have only played six games so far, the time it took for the move to be made really isn't all that surprising... The decision of which goaltender to put on waivers was no doubt difficult as they had to try and get it right... and then it's also possible that they were trying to trade either Hiller or Ramo before risking putting one of them on waivers... If the team starts playing better as a whole, and the number of quality scoring chances against is reduced, that will go a long way... Let's hope it happens soon...

I Cannata Imagine why they traded them when they were supposedly sober before it was even Miller time... It's not like they were getting Auld either... They took a Gamble and got Snow'ed... They should try and get them Bachman...

Seems they just weren't Quick enough and didn't pay the Price... Maybe they should have used a Cristobal to see if they should have stuck with a Legacy like Thomas...

  7. This was the statement that Nenhi made on Tuesday regarding the arena project... From : http://calgaryherald.com/news/local-news/mayor-nenshis-statement-on-the-flames-arena-project Today, the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation (the company that owns the Calgary Flames and Stampeders, among other professional sports teams) released an intriguing proposal for a new arena, sports fieldhouse, and football stadium. This project has been in the works for some time, and I am pleased that the Flames ownership group is now engaging the public on what they would like to see. I also appreciate that the ownership group has come forward with a definitive financial commitment — something that has rarely been seen in other cities. However, there are a number of challenges that must now be addressed: ♦ The proposal has not been part of the City’s comprehensive capital planning process, and does not form part of the plan, under which the City’s capital funds are fully allocated through 2018; ♦ The proposal includes incorporating the City’s proposed (and much-needed) fieldhouse into the facility. However, that project, while a very high priority for the City, remains unfunded; ♦ The funding proposal includes a $250-million “ticket tax,” but it is unclear if the City will be asked to provide the upfront financing for this; ♦ The proposed site requires significant expenditures to remediate the environmental contamination there. That remediation is also unfunded; ♦ In addition, the proposal requires the contribution of land, a community revitalization levy and significant investments in infrastructure to make the West Village a complete and vibrant community. Therefore, there are very significant requirements for public funding beyond the fieldhouse funding, and there is currently no money. I have said for a long time — and continue to strongly believe — that public money must be for public benefit and not private profit. The question for council, the ownership group, and all Calgarians is whether this proposal meets that test. That said, I truly appreciate the efforts of the ownership group in bringing forward an innovative project in a thoughtful, professional, and ethical way. I firmly believe that these Calgarians want to do something exceptional for our community. City council will ensure that there is significant public engagement and will work co-operatively with the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation and the other orders of government to determine whether this project is viable. — Mayor Naheed Nenshi

The Flames still needed Ramo as there was not an assured upgrade in net available, and there was no way that the Flames were going to let him go without at least seeing a return via a trade... The term and dollars were appropriate and reasonable, and I am glad that they kept him... Hiller lost the starter job at the end of the season, but he will still be given the opportunity to step up and claim it as will Ramo, unless Ortio can prove that he can claim the job first... If that does not happen, we can expect to see a 1a 1b situation in net again., and then depending on how things play out for the Flames. there is still a good chance that Hiller could become trade bait at some point prior to the trade deadline if another team has a goaltender injured and he can fill a need..
  10. Well, I guess the speculators have to speculate... From: http://www.edmontonjournal.com/sports/hockey/edmonton-oilers/Hockey+World+Short+shifts+Edmonton/10809043/story.html?cid=dlvr.it-twitter-ej_oilers - Phil Kessel is due $10-million next year and $28 mil over the next three seasons, which is a big swallow, but you’d think Brian Burke, who brought him to the Toronto Maple Leafs and now is president of the Calgary Flames, would still be interested. Key is what teams give up for his price-tag. Calgary has prospects (Sam Bennett is off-limits but Morgan Klimchuk, Emile Poirier, Jon Gillies in goal, and Sven Baertschi wouldn’t be), and they’d probably move a centre like Mikael Backlund. Sean Monahan would be untouchable, though. Just throwing it out there.

  13. CALGARY- It’s time for the Calgary Flames to get a new home—at least, according to the team’s president of hockey operations. While speaking to a sold out crowd at the Chamber of Commerce on Thursday morning, Brian Burke said a new facility to replace the Saddledome is needed sooner than later. “It’s embarrassing,” he said, of the aging facility. “There is one building worse than ours…the Islanders.” Saying it was a state of the art building back in 1988, he adds it simply doesn’t measure up anymore. “Lower bowls in a newer arena are nine thousand seats minimum. Ours is what, six? So we are not generating revenues like other NHL buildings are.” Burke said the whole city could benefit from a new facility. “The weight load that the roof will bear is tiny, so a lot of the big stage acts don’t come here. So it’s not just what a hockey team gets, what it adds to a hockey team, it’s what it does to a downtown core. The idea does have some support, including from the business community and at least one city councillor. “A facility like this in inner city only grows the vibrancy and dynamic energy of a downtown or inner city core,” says Adam Legge, president of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. “All the infrastructure to support those things, hotels, restaurants, are already there.” “I was three-years-old when the Saddledome was built,” adds Ward 8 councillor Evan Woolley. “I would like to think I have grown up since then, and I know the city has.” Despite talk about a new arena, the city has yet to receive any formal proposals. 14. It's a multi-purpose site, which seems to be the way the Calgary Flames Limited Partnership that own the Flames and Stampeders, as well as the Hitmen and Roughnecks seems to have been leaning towards when it comes to a new building... This one was said to be a part of the rumour of a potential bid by the Canadian Soccer Association for the 2026 World Cup... It's a rendering of a "New Calgary Stadium" proposed for 2019, with a total capacity of 48,000 seats, 13,000 of them temporarily added for the purpose of the bid... But... Years have gone by now, and Ken King still seems to be over promising and under delivering... We were supposed to have details on a new arena what, four years ago? The article in the Calgary Sun back at the end of March made a comparison between renderings of a new stadium and bigfoot... http://www.calgarysun.com/2014/03/26/new-stadium-renderings-may-have-more-in-common-with-bigfoot-than-football I`m starting to wonder which will happen first... Evidence of bigfoot being found, or Ken King finally giving us some concrete answers on plans for a new arena/stadium...
  15. The announcement for a new arena, the location and a design is definitely long overdue... The Saddledome is 31 years old and McMahon is 54 years old... It's time for Ken King to quit talking and making promises and issuing quotes like this one from a few months back in the spring and just get it done instead... "I can't tell you anything more for plans on a new facility other than we are planning one and we have been for years now"... That's exactly the problem Ken King... You've been talking about it for years... Now it's time to deliver... The fans that have been paying their hard earned dollars to support the teams deserve it... One has to wonder if the design for a new arena will be anything like some of the ones that have been rumoured in the last year or so...

I was trying to think of a kind way of saying that MacDonald was washed up, but then the thought occurred to me that if he has never been anything other than a mediocre goaltender at any point of his career, it makes it rather difficult to say that his skill level has actually deteriorated... While I have to admit that MacDonald has had a few good games and on occasion has made some stellar saves during his tenure with the Flames, it is much easier to point out his poor performances and instances of absolute incompetence... Some of his bad games are hard to forget, like the loss against the Yotes on Oct. 22nd last season... This is one of my "favorite"? examples of atrocious goaltending by Joey Mac... Similar circumstances, but they were different goals... He lost sight of the puck, and sure that happens, but as a goaltender I can tell you that it should have been be a pretty good clue in both of those instances as to it's probable location when all of the players in his immediate vicinity from both teams had their attention focused off to his left side... It is a basic instinct to at least have a quick glance in that direction, which then also lets you know if there is a player(s) from the other team that is open... It is also quite simply an elemental and integral part of goaltending 101... To have that happen once in game is an embarrassment, even if it is a rare incident... I have to admit that I have made similar mistakes myself in the heat of the moment, and over time no doubt more than once, every goaltender does ... But to let it happen twice in the same game would be unthinkable... I have known other goalies that would not have done that even after consuming most of a 2-4 of their favorite brew while playing a game of shinny with friends... That kind of goaltending can deflate a team, and that is not what a team in the middle of a rebuild like the Flames needs... I think the Flames realize the predicament the franchise got into regarding goaltending, and that is one of the reasons they took Mason McDonald with the 34th pick even though they are also lacking quality D prospects... I will be grievously disappointed if the Flames go into the upcoming season with Joey Mac as their backup... It would be bad enough if they retain him to play in Addy, and I hope that doesn't happen either...

In case he has played his last game for the Flames, we should give him a nickname before he goes...
