There were a few games where I would have preferred to have seen McDonald rather than MacDonald in the net...

That would be my guess... It's either that, or maybe a trade for a backup if there is someone specific they want that could be available by utilizing some spare parts the Flames would like to get rid of anyways... But I would have to think the FA scenario is more likely...

Stiil not seeing much for any press releases, but I can pass along this this,.. It's from Ian Campell (journalist for 660 news)...

Burke spoke at the Calgary Chamber of Commerce this morning... http://www.calgarychamber.com/interact/events/chamber-event/brian-burke-business-hockey I do not have a link for the quote yet, I just new someone that was at the meeting and passed the info along to me knowing that I would be interested as we have had more than a few goaltender related discussions... Burke advised that the team is in the market for a backup goaltender for next year... That also would seem to indicate to me that the Flames will be relying on Ramo as the starter... It also would appear that one way or another JMac is being put out to pasture...

JMac can run either hot or cold, he is very inconsistent... When he is having an off game (which is not uncommon), the soft goals he lets in can deflate the team... When he was brought in on waivers, it wasn't the end of the world as we still had Kipper, and other viable options at that time were limited... The fact that he was available on waivers in the first place though, speaks for itself... So does the fact that at 34 years old, he has just a total of $5.2 mil career earnings to date... Also, at 34 I would not be surprised if his play was to decline, especially if Ramo was out of action due to injury and JMac was called upon to step in as the starter... As far as being a mentor, I think his abilities in that area are very limited, as he just does not have the track record for it... I am also of the opinion that Ortio could use at least another season or more with the Heat... and Gillies is even further away in his development curve... I would like to see the Flames make another acquisition for a backup goaltender, and age is not as important to me as the skill set... So either a younger goalie that has shown some consistency and has potential for a higher ceiling, or a vet that can bring more stability in the role than JMac does would be fine with me...

Dubnyk has made it a habit to let in far too many soft goals... His playing has regressed... and if you look at his stats from this season, he somehow found a way to let even more pucks get by him per game in the 2 games he was in net for the Preds than his average was with the Oilers during the season... I would even rather the Flames keep Joey Mac as a backup, so that doesn't say much for my opinion of Dubnyk...

Just an observation of how times are changing for the Flames... Ramo played 40 games for the flames this season, and that is the most for a goalie other than Kipper since 02/03 when Turek played 65...

As an example. one of his faults is Berra tends to panic when handling the puck, and at 27 that is a habit that is hard to break for a goaltender...

As near as I can remember, Tim Thomas only played 4 games in the NHL before he was 32 years old... Then he won the Vezina and the Jennings at 34, and then won the Vezina again, along with the Conn Smythe and the Cup at 36... So I would have to suppose that he didn't get the memo that a goaltender is supposed to peak at 26...

Too late for Berra... But I wouldn't be surprised to see Ramo back this week or next, and Ortio back with the Heat for a run... j/k... We know you meant Ramo and typo'ed...

It is also my opinion that considering the limited time he has played, Ortio has perhaps shown that he has the most potential to possibly become a bona fide starter... He has poise that neither Ramo or Berra have shown with any consistency, and Joey Mac is not even in the conversation... Ramo has shown some promise, but the jury is still out and needs more time to make the call... Berra had flashes of brilliance, but those were outweighed by the brain fart moments... As a prime example, the decisions that he made as to when to handle the puck behind the net, and the poor decisions he made of what to do with it while in a state of panic that all too often resulted in either a turnover or a goal are an indicator of one of the things that is very difficult to correct in a goaltender long before they reach that age... Can that be remedied?... Sure... It's possible, and if it can, a mentor like Patrick Roy would be the guy to do it... Perhaps that's what the Av's were hoping with the trade and why they the gave up a 2nd round pick... Malarchuk is a decent goaltender coach, but I do not believe that he is one of the best... and I think that is one of the coaching positions that the Flames should be keeping an eye open to make an upgrade...

I agree that it was not an ideal situation, but the only other option was Joey Mac, and I agree with the Flames decision not to play him instead, as his future is very limited (if there is one) in the NHL... Ortio earned his shot, and has no doubt gained valuable experience from it... and if we could ask him, I am sure he would answer that he has been (to quote a band from Western Canada back in the day) ``Lovin' Every Minute of It``... It`s looking like Ramo will be back in about a week, Ortio can go back to the Heat and help them for the run, and then Ramo and Ortio can compete in training camp...

Sounds like it's an MCL injury, so this could take a while... The Flames will not rush him back in at this point and risk further complications with his knee down the road... Looks like Ortio gets the start again tonight...
