Dude....there's only been 2 games. And there's 3 goalies. You can't put 2 goalies in net at once. Give it some time. If, after maybe 10 games, Ortio hasn't even seen the bench as a backup, then maybe there'd be something to be concerned about, but only maybe.

    2nd, 3rd, and a top prospect? I'll take that for Raymond + G

Sure, but what does BUF have that we'd want in return? Looking at their roster, there hardly seems like anything that stands out as an upgrade or decent replacement. I'd love to package Raymond and a goalie to BUF, but there's nothing in BUF I want to see here.
  4. That's certainly one way of looking at it. Or, you could look at it like "here's a piece of criticism about your game that we want you to improve on. Work on this in Stockton, and we'll keep an eye on how you're doing". The words weren't harsh. Blunt sure, but not harsh at all. Hartley cited a clear-cut example of something he feels he wants out of TSpoon. Nobody improves without criticism, and critiquing is part of what training camp is about. How are you to know what to improve on if nobody tells you? I'm sure TSpoon has endured criticism and critiquing of his game ever since he started playing...every single player (including Gretzky, Crosby, Lemeiux, and Ovetchkin) have had someone somewhere point out something they needed to improve on. How they react to it shows what kind of person they are. The results show whether or not they are capable of the level expected of them. If Hartley were to tell him "I need you to be the second coming of Scott Stevens", then yes I could see there being an issue with expectations. Hartley didn't say this. He said "fix and improve this part".
  5. Anyone in Calgary find the Flames/Jets game on TV? My TSN3 says it's blacked out

  8. Essentially, a company that used to treat railway ties and electricity poles with creosote (essentially a wood preservation chemical). Over almost 40 years, this chemical was used in what is now the West Village by a company named Creosote Canada. Lots of this chemical spilled onto the land, and was never cleaned up. Creosote Canada was sold, and the new company went out of business a few years later, leaving the Province and City with nobody to force to clean up the mess. As I understand it (I think I heard this on a follow-up news report once CalgaryNEXT was pitched), the Province is responsible (re: liable) for what the creosote ends up doing to the environment, but the moment the City starts to do something about it, the City then becomes responsible (re: liable) for anything that happens. Light reading: http://www.calgarysun.com/2015/08/19/calgarynexts-first-hurdle-is-creosote-cleanup-in-west-village Mid-level reading: http://calgaryherald.com/news/local-news/creosote-contamination-at-proposed-arena-site-to-be-studied Insomnia cure: http://environment.gov.ab.ca/info/library/5693.pdf Hope this helps, redfire (and anyone else)
  9. I agree with your "not gonna be a cash cow" statement. However, when it comes to the other stuff (and this is not directed at you specifically, cross), try to think of it this way..... Look at what East Village once was. A very poor, run-down area of Calgary that was in desperate need of an overhaul. It's being rebuilt, and looking good in the process. Now, will the majority of Calgarians see a benefit from the renovations? Probably not. But the City Revitalization Levy (CRL) was created for this exact purpose. Now that the East Village is stable, it's time to look elsewhere, and West Village is apparently making a bid to be the next in line. East Village will see things like the new King Eddie, the National Music Centre, the new library, and various other cultural venues. West Village is vying to be kind of the same thing, but instead of culture things, it's being devoted to sports and athletic things.
  10. I think your relocation stance is a valid one, but missing a couple of things..... 1 - land in the new area won't be cheap, resulting in higher leases for places like Shank's (to continue your example). This will result in companies/groups that want to move to the new location to make *very* sure that they can afford it for themselves. 2 - if development gets moved to this new section of land from somewhere else pre-planned, that previous pre-planned area is then freed up for other new development. 3 - even if pre-planned development stays where it is, there will be no shortage of new companies/groups lining up to purchase sites in the new space. Worst case scenario that I see in all of this (strictly from a who's-gonna-occupy-the-space viewpoint) is that we end up with another Eau Claire section of town. Eau Claire, in its heyday, was a vibrant, family-friendly area to be in: main access to Prince's Island, Granville Island-esque street entertainment, varied and vibrant stores in the mall, even the Hard Rock Cafe (during the day) contributed to the family friendly atmosphere. When "the money" started buying up the condos surrounding Eau Claire, and started complaining about the noise, the area started a long, agonizing slide into nothingness. I still feel sad for what we lost in that area.
  11. Throw in a month's worth of Chicago Deep Dish pizza and a flat of Canadian every week for a year, and you got yourself a deal.
  12. A couple of "leaked" images I found from the Calgary NEXT meeting There will be a live-streamed press conference at 2:30 this afternoon.
  13. "after parties" are definitely a consideration, but downtown is currently capable of smoothly handling rush hour traffic, let alone capable of handling that many people coming out of a hockey game (currently 19k people, new stadium would undoubtedly hold more), or a football game (currently 46K people, again undoubtedly more with a new stadium)
  14. I still don't think the West End is the best place for all of this (if that is truly where it will be built). Given the proximity to the river, flood potential still exists (moreso than the creek that runs behind the Saddledome), and I would think the Flames would be more than a little gunshy about building an all-encompassing multiplex that close to the Bow. I still maintain that Foothills Atheletic Park (McMahon Stadium area) or Fire Park (near Max Bell arena) would be the better locations. Guess we'll find out on Tuesday (btw, part of me believes this is a media "stunt" for something Ken King is completely excited about, and thinks the rest of the city should be too, but will turn out to be something well-short of a new stadium announcement...something more along the lines of a new partnership, or a new corporate sponsor, or even a new charity foundation or a branch-out of the current Flames charities)

  16. Ken King and Flames ownership are notoriously tight-lipped. KK's never been very open about the new arena, even when cornered by the press. My feeling is that they're still negotiation on funding with the city and province (trying to create a financing deal similar to what Edmonton got), and giving the current economy, discussions probably aren't going well (if they're even talking still at all). Until they get to within inches of signing a deal, it's unlikely we'll hear anything official at all.
  17. MTL are done with Gonchar, Malhotra, and Weaver http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/marc-bergevin-says-sergei-gonchar-manny-malhotra-mike-weaver-wont-return-to-montreal-canadiens/ Are any of these guys appealing, even for a year?

After Dallas got that first goal, they kept targeting Hiller's top-glove side. Glad he was able to get that under control, or it could have been a very different game.
  24. Not eligible for the playoffs? Why?
  25. My preference has always been the McMahon Stadium area (tons of room, infrastructure already in place) as it could potentially be a sports district for the city. Other preference would be Barlow\Max Bell C-train station area (more difficult for vehicle traffic, but transit is right there, plus it's in a prominent overlook of the city). In my mind, the GSL/Greyhound area is too small and too awkward geographically to put a professional sports arena in. Guess we'll find out in 2 weeks.
