  1. First look at Ronni. Hzonek will gets some views no doubt, cuz shiny new toys.
  2. No unwritten rule in this case. The player was included in trade calls and nobody wanted that inclusion. Sending him down gives a little more options, but ultimately, they either buy out or pay a portion of his salary. A buyout is cheaper, but lasts for 4 years (low dollars though). At 50%, he represents as much risk/reward as other players signed in FA, just a 2 year deal to worry about. AT 50%, you can bury him without penalty. And teams would likely claim him if they saw something in him at 50%. I say risk reward since we have seen guys like Pitlick and Jarnkrok come here and do nothing.
  3. If DET wants him back they can re-claim him if we decided to waive him in the future. If we like him, we should ask DET to retain salary on him after he clears. That way we don't have dead cap and he doesn't have to clear again. He's probably worth one of our B prospexts, since he asked for the trade. Give him a chance on the roster at camp. I'm not saying he's better, but why not look at the kid on a low risk trade. If he's not on the NHL roster he costs just cash. We can still go and take risks on other UFA's that may not be any better.
  4. Seems like our best defense choices come from 2nd rounders. Keep up the good work. Definitely a value pick.
  5. Well, we release Beck only to invite him to Dev camp. Guess he might get an AHL deal, which is smart if they do it. Any names jump out at anyone? Like the UFA's that JJ is always talking about?
  6. There's a good chance he gets claimed before we ignore him. LOL It's a low risk move by us. Other teams have not come close to filling their rosters. And quite a few have money.
  7. Sorry for all the dumb ideas. I think there are so many ways we can improve overall this summer. Trades are necessary. Rolling out the same has its value but it doesn't get us any cap relief.
  8. Maybe. Bear is also a buy low LTIR option. Not that I would build a team based on LTIR. You have to mitigate against Tanev or Ras injuries on the RD. Get that cap space without LTIR is you can or just go ahead and trade for top players. I think we could be quietly strong this season as is, assuming a few players moving out. Ruzie with a better role, Pelletier in a position to score, Kylington back in the top 4. Weegar will rebund as will Hubey. If we trade Lindholm for futures, all bets off. I think we should try to maximize the perceived values of Backlund and Mangiapane. While they both are good for us, a drop off in play is not. They take up important minutes for us. As a package, they might make a team lik CHI a stronger team. Lukas Reichel and Raddysh for the pair. Really a cap dump for futures, but both are gong to be good. Then we can look at Dumba as a FA and trade Hanifin for whatever we like.
  9. I think a lot of deals that happened were teams loading up for this year. The team mimics its winners. Bigger tougher is the new normal. The smarter GM's are looking strategically. Compher is a pay now save later deal. Bert is a pay now and pay a lot more later or just a one year get tougher. We picked the wrong year to take a step back. If it's just a year then it makes little sense. Trading Toffoli is meant to create competition for the top RW spot, but right now we don't have those top 6 RW defaults. So we have like Ward had in Lindholm-Dube. Deserved maybe but no competition. I would like to see an actual top 6 RW brought in. Let them fight and claw with other to get the #1 job. Perhaps some buy low candidates get you some decent play: Erne, Comtois, Patrick, Puljujarvi
  10. Non starter. I don't have an issue in including Vladar in the deal for Nylander, but has to include equivalent of a 2nd or 3rd coming back. Holmberg or Robertson. Balances out the money a bit better.
  11. Considering the short term deals for some of the top guys, I wonder if Tarasenko is going to sign a one year deal to hold until next summer. I think the idea if we can use it for trade purposes. He's getting up there but can still score. Only worth keeping if he kills it for us and would sign an extension for 3 years at lower than expected cost. I doubt he does that. Even a one year extension would benefit him. Two years and the cap really jumps. Pipe dream. The best idea is to target under 30, or under 25 just hitting their stride. We should be moving out guys like Mangiapane and getting guys that can elevate their game. And don't fall every shift. He's a re-signing problem in a few years so why not get rid of him now.
  12. I don't think it's a win for him, in that the fans think Willie is worth 4 first rounders. They think a trade gets you NcDavid or Drysaitl for him. But overall, Hanifin + Bert + Domi makes them a lot tougher in the playoffs. Gets them goals they don't score there. And eliminates the $10M extension. Big picture. Murray bought out is a win. I couldn't believe that his actual salary this year is $8M. ANd Dorion still has a job!
  13. And he doesn't even have cap space to work with. He has LTIR to work with and now that is gone. One goalie of note signed and their real guy waiting on an extension. They don't even have any buyout options. I suspect that Willie Nee is going soon. At this point, Willie for Hanifin would be a win for BT. They will let Samsonov go to arbitration to open the buyout window for Murray. That's $4M in cap savings this year. We could then turn around and deal Vladar for Robertson and still they come out ahead. This almost seems believable that BT would do this. It's fits his MO. It gets him out of the cap issues this year by barely enough. It gets him 2 players that he loves. As far as the CGY side, it creates problems next year. We are going to need to trade Backlund for scraps as it is or make another move to open cap. Having Nylander means we should not keep Mangiapane.
  14. There was zero market for Phillips in trade.
  15. I wasn't comparing him to EDM at all, just saying that some that start that way never learn. But that has a lot to do with EDM that rewards goals and detests shurdown.
  16. Naw, just check some different articles. I don't dig too deep. Since he's so young he has loads of time to develop. He could possibly be good enough to score in the NHL now, but that's just one part. Bouchard is scoring a lot in EDM and still can't defend. Even after all these years. He was a scoring maching in Jr. But never was good at D.
  17. Toronto bites on Bertuzzi and gets him on a one year deal at 5.5M. Good for BT to silence some of his critics. Yamamoto signs for $1,5M in SEA, so he should bite EDM in the butt a few times. Then don't really defend well on forechecking. That was the best part of Yammer's game that I saw.
  18. Some interesting comments in the report, but I have heard some rumblings about him being a good body defender. So, a bit higher up on the evolutionary scale than Poirier, and I like Poirier. Keep him improving his D game and we should be happy with the progression.
  19. For context, I have 1) Weegar 2) Ras 3) Hanifin 4) Tanev 5) Kylington 6) Zadorov I don't think you can really dispute who makes up the top 3, though rank open for debate. Rank of bottom 3 up for debate as well. If Oesterle is better than any of the bottom 3, I would be surprised.
  20. One has to consider how he fits in a shutdown role with Zaddy. With Kylington, he's 7. Without Hanifin he's 6. I don't consider Gilbert much of a 8, but he does work hard.
  21. Rebuild, schmebuild. I would conside the likes of Linden Vey and Eddie Lack more of a rebuild.
