Well you don't always get the bet deals on day 1. Besides, what is the point in trading a usefull player with one year left so that you can sign a usefull player with one year left. Sounds funny. NAS cleared a bunch of salary and has buyout penalties to deal with and tuened around and signed more guys to long term deals. TBH, I think we see a trade of Backlund now that the so called top players have signed. If not, Backlund still represents draft capital at TDL. I have zero belief that even if we are a playoff team by TDL that we don't trade Backlund. So draft capiral. If we aren't trading him, then he is re-signed before TDL. Not that I want that. But, really I see him going this summer. He's the right type of player for a team full of kids. If a roster player comes back, he has to be a pending RDA or be cheaper. Or both. A trade for a shutdown RD is my preference. Hanifin is not the type to trade when the prices are low. You need to find the right deal.

I don't think you trade a D to get a D, but that's just me. Use the Backlund trade to get you a minor player. One not gifted offensively but can shut down the F. I think CHI is still a dark horse for a Hanifin trade. Has to be good prospects or young players. I don't care that they want to keep them all, they have to pay. Chance of them getting another lotto pick is marginal this year, so let them protect it for more coming our way. Hanifin is young enough to spend the next 8 years in CHI.

If we could line up Poirier with Tanev, I think we would see something. Kuz seems to me to still be a year off.

The TDL trade was a waste of a player Sutter wouldn't play. Neither was really top 6, but Mackey had some upside. I don't even know what the point of signing Stecher would be this summer. We are trying to trade a top pair D. We should be looking for a player that makes Zadorov better. Stone as a stand-in is fine, should we not graduate any kids. If we were to sign Bear, we still need someone for the start of the season. Stone starting there is worrisome. I didn't mind the JT Compher signing but he's not much younger than Lindholm. Not even a year. Good term though. Congrats on signing Fischer. Cheap and a decent goal scorer in ARI. If that's saying much.

The funny thing is that this is the first time in 11 years (?) that we have not signed a single player on UFA day. There were some deals out there. We didn't bite on the crap sandwiches (Anaheim?). I laughed at the excuse that we didn't have cap space or money. If you want something you make it work. Unless the owners have told you the approvals go through them.

The problem with TO is that they have Marner making 4M more than Nylander. They want to re-sign Matthews but it's going to be big, regaardless of term. They can't afford Willie Nee at $9M. So it makes it tough. I get the hate. He was not much when the going got tough, but at least he scored in the playoffs, unless a few of our guys. Bert might be a good fit if we can move Hanifin for mostly futures. A younger F to go with the return. Backlund should be going too. Other than Bert, JT Compler might be a good fit. Dumba is fine, but do we need another expensive D?

JT Compher looks like he's not getting re-signed in COL. They signed Wood to 6 years and haven't yet signed Colton.

As ell as Leafs having problems moving Nylander so they can sign Bert. Good ole BT. We know of how hard you work.

Dumb arse BT should have asked for his list weeks ago. He can look at the league and make some choices now. Kadri supposedly did that to block a trade.

Teams are making odd choices. If you are thinking big signings; Bertuzzi kinda fits the bill. Have to move out a ton of salary to do it. Backlund for Nothing, Lindholm for futures. Probably Mangiapane. If you are thinking TO trades Nylander, we have to send them Hanifin + Mangiapane or Dube. Perhaps overpay. Then we still need to get rid of Backlund. I would prefer that we look at Bear. Dumba is going to cost too much. Would need to get rid of Tanev.
