  1. Ortio is now on waivers. End of his time on the Flames this year. Hello mediocre goaltending.
  2. Hiller has been worse by a long shot. Ramo had 3 starts and was bad. Hiller had 5 starts after Ramo was waived and managed nothing good except for a victory over the Wings. That game the Flames put 40 shots on net compared to 29 against. He was pulled one and left injured in another where he let in 4 goals on 18 shots. While Hartley may not have a lot of confidence in Ortio, where would he get any in Hiller this season.
  3. I don't disagree with the article, as I have been spouting it for some time now this season. The source is what I question. JW is a renowned Oiler blogger/writer. It's funny how this was written around the time rumors of Calgary trying to make a trade with NYI, and the Oilers were said to be in the mix. No, I don't wear a tinfoil hat. Some of the columnists that cover the Oilers get inside info because of the favourable press they give the Oilers. When the jerseys were being tossed and the cry was Fire Lowe, few were writing scathing reviews. Like I said the timing is what has me wondering. Especially where the source writes mostly about Oilers and primarily the Edmonton Journal.
  4. At least Ortio has been in full practices since then. Hiller's only right to come back into the rotation is based on his play from last year, prior to getting pulled in the playoffs. Since the main GT position was between Ramo and Hiller to starts the year, and Ramo was waived, what does that say about the next one facing waivers or playing in the AHL for a stint? By the way BT has played it, Hiller will be the guy to go down. Ortio is being used as a McBackup was during the Kipper years. I don't agree with the usage, but Ramo is the starter and we need the wins now.
  5. The same could be said for the whole lineup. Hartley, when he gets a win, does not want to change anything. Going with Ramo makes sense because he is winning (or almost winning) every game he starts. Unless Ramo is tired, there is no reason to sit him. That can only go on for so long, but now is not the best time to change. Ramo has not lost in Anaheim as the starter. What I can't understand is why Hiller will be back in the "rotation" once he comes of IR. He was terrible before he was injured. Now, he is out of practice. At least Ortio has been practicing with the team since Hiller was injured. While I understand the argument that he is a #1 goalie, that is not the case this season. Maybe it's harsh, but he needs to go to the AHL. Whether that is by waiver or conditioning stint, that is the only way we can be sure he is ready. Practice does not do it. The Heat need a reliable tender, not an ECHL goalie backing up an AHL backup.
  6. You assume of course that Ortio will be the guy to go down. Hiller has more to prove due to his horrible start. Ortio had 2 bad games.
  7. I do think that Hiller is still on the IR. I would think it's a better time to send Hiller down on a conditioning stint. He hasn't played in a long time, and I would be reluctant to play him any time soon in the NHL. If Ortio is sent down, there is still a risk of losing him. That happens and we are worse off.
  8. A dark cloud seems to be hanging over the Heat goalies this season. Poulin left the shootout after injuring himself. Simpson was forced to finish the shootout. Until Gillies returns, the Heat have an AHL backup as the starter and an ECHL goalie as the backup.
  9. Smid is more like a lead lining. He has been a disaster. Having Smid in the lineup means Dougie and Wideman or Wideman and Gio. Bringing up a farm hand would help. They could play about 12 minutes on the 2nd pair, and split the other 8 between Brodie and Wideman and Gio.
  10. I was looking at Hockeydb, but I also checked NHL.com (see link), He played 15 games for TPS Turku with 2-7-3 with 38 GA. He must have got the hook for some or come in for relief. The same year (2010/11) he played 1 games for the Heat, with 6 GA. Here's the link. Count the WJC if you like but have to say one name... Pogge. http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8475299
  11. Hard to compare leagues, but McDonald has been over .900 in the last 2 seasons, which is an accomplishment in that league where defense is secondary. He is sitting at .899 this season, which is close. Ortio had 3 games in his 19 year old season. Wasn't until his 21 year old season that he actually played a real season. Only reason I bring this up is you said Ortio was doing far greater thans than McDonald at that age. Is one tourney the only thing that proves this? I must be missing some things.
  12. I'm not sure what Ortio you are talking about, but his numbers at the same age weren't exactly Kipper-esque. Joni Ortio Goalie Born Apr 16 1991 -- Turku, Finland Height 6.01 -- Weight 185 -- Shoots R Selected by Calgary Flames round 6 #171 overall 2009 NHL Entry Draft Season Team Lge GP Min GA EN SO GAA W L T Svs Pct ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2009-10 TPS Turku SM-liiga 3 108 8 0 0 4.45 1 0 0 41 0.837 2010-11 Abbotsford Heat AHL 1 60 6 0 0 6.03 0 0 0 24 0.800 2011-12 Abbotsford Heat AHL 9 387 19 0 0 2.94 1 4 0 153 0.890 2011-12 TPS Turku SM-liiga 14 753 33 0 2 2.63 3 6 3 329 0.909 2012-13 HIFK Helsinki SM-liiga 54 3120 126 0 4 2.42 23 20 9 1383 0.917 2013-14 Abbotsford Heat AHL 37 2133 83 1 2 2.33 27 8 0 1036 0.926 2013-14 Alaska Aces ECHL 4 238 4 0 2 1.01 3 1 0 67 0.944 2013-14 Calgary Flames NHL 9 501 21 0 0 2.51 4 4 0 172 0.891 2014-15 Adirondack Flames AHL 37 2095 94 3 4 2.69 21 13 1 980 0.912 2014-15 Calgary Flames NHL 6 333 14 0 1 2.52 4 2 0 139 0.908 2015-16 Calgary Flames NHL 4 140 10 0 0 4.28 0 2 0 66 0.868 When he was 20, he played on Abby for 9 games. At 21 he was back in Finland. At 22 he played again in Abby. Good number from that point, but he was 20 before you started seeing results. McDonald is just 19.
  13. Four good games last season, followed by 2 losses (4 GA, .636SA%. 5 GA .773SA%). Two games this season (4GA .883SA%. 6GA .806SA% though 1 was an EN). Not exactly awe inspiring. He needs playing time. There doesn't appear to be a good time to start a goalie that hasn't shown anything since almost a year ago. Hartley is trying to win, so does he take a chance on a goalie that has done nothing to prove he is a reliable option? Does he play Ortio after the defense mostly gave the game away? Only two games this week. NJD and CHI. I'm not saying it's right or fair, just what the coach is doing. The time for giving him a few games in a row is probably passed. If Hiller comes back in a week, then BT decides on the body of work or future value. My preference is to waive Hiller or get him to play in the AHL for a week or so. Mistake to have him here at the start of the season with two other NHL goalies.
  14. It's just as hard to predict which defense you are going to see. The one that gives an opponent 3 or 4 whacks at the puck or left alone in a prime scoring location? Let the opponent set up camp in the crease? Let down in the 3rd? And which offense you are going to see. High-powered or anemic? Combine good goaltending (no more than 1 stinker), effective defense, and reasonable scoring and we are tough to beat.
  15. The last 5 games are probably a better indication of defensive coverage and solid goaltending coming together. Philly game - 1 GA, 1 GF in regulation Pitts game - 2 GA, 5 GF FLA game - 4 GA, 3 GF - 3rd goal no chance, 4th goal Jagr left alone TBL game - 3 GA, 1 GF - 2nd and 3rd goals no chance WASH game - 2 GA 2 GF in regulation - both goals players left wide open In all those games, Ramo gave us a chance to win. FLA games was perhaps the worst showing. In the WASH game, he held the fort with the Flames trying to find a way to lose in the 3rd. I'm not saying Ramo is a world beater, but maybe take away 2nd and 3rd attempts or extended zone pressure by providing decent defense.
  16. Calling Ramo's performance as average is a little insulting. Were any of the goals his fault? Don't think so. Both were defensive lapses. 1st one was Ferland leaving his guy alone thinking he was in the wrong spot. The 2ns was Brodie leaving the guy before Gio came in. If BT wants to keep Ortio, he has to send Hiller to Stockton as soon as he comes off IR. If he can't play better there, then waive Hiller at the end of the conditioning stint. At some point Hartley will play Ortio. If he is no better, then he has to go.
  17. I look at the cap and worry what waiving Ortio does. $600k in relief. Compare that to $950k if either Hiller or Ramo gets waived. It's kinda tight with both those guys back. Unless Hille gets a new hip, is he going to be better or be as bad as he was the early part of the season. I don't know. If they are running with Ramo and Hiller, just waive Ortio now, while there are no injuries in goalie-world. Less chance of him being claimed. Bring up Poulin as backup. He's not going to play anyway. Ortio gets starter minutes in the AHL and the intrigue is done.
  18. If there was a free spot in the roster, then he could be called up. We have 23 which is the limit. Would need to waive a player to do it. Likely Raymond or Smid or Bollig. But we have 7D already. Nakladal isn't likely to get time unless we trade Russell or Wideman. A short-term injury likely means Smid goes back in.
  19. I think that is a lineup that a lot of us have been waiting for. Convince BH that Russell is a 5/6 guy, though.
  20. They had a very short window to drop Ortio to the AHL, but did not use it. They knew at the time that they were stuck with Hiller and Ramo, so why was he even kept there? No sense to that at all. Hartley expressed that he having 3 didn't work, said that last year. If Hiller and Ramo played out the games, Ortio would have had a few games under his belt. Results likely would have been different, and we wouldn't have had to waive a goalie. If Hiller still got injured, he could have been called up.
  21. His value right now is NIL. If he is able to start putting up points (he's actually our leading point producer on D right now) consistently, his value will be a lot higher at TDL. Away from Russell, he hasn't been quite as bad, but he needs someone like Nakladal to cover his lapses.
  22. What I fear is that Ramo continues at the pace of win 2, lose 3 until Hiller returns. Then Hiller gets started and he wins 1, loses 3. Wonder what it would be like to have a goalie have a .922 GAA at this point in the season?
  23. I think it was more the analysts that said this. But you have to admit that Feaster kept together a group that had basically been lucky enough to get as many wins as they did. He said he felt the team could perform and put his trust to do so.
  24. The mistake was starting Ramo yesterday. You can't start a "questionable results" goalie after a loss or on the back half of a B2B with a tired team in front. Since they started Ramo yesterday and he was better than just good in a loss, you have to go back to him. We need a win now, and asking a guy to come in cold against a high-octane team is asking a lot.
  25. Has anyone actually ever said that? I thought the concept was that Kipper masked the problems of the Flames. Having him here after the cup run convinced some that the team was constructed correctly. Good teams are built from the net out. We have steps 2 (top 3 defense - mostly covered) and step 3 (top 6, secondary scoring - mostly covered) but forgot about step 1. Ramo and Hiller were attempts to have competent goaltending. League average is all we could ever have hoped for with them. Having a Kipper now would give the defense some more confidence, and turn Russell into something other than a backup goalie with a bad first pass.
