  1. It's bad for us, but at the same time takes the training wheels off for BT. It means we have no other choice but to pursue a starting goalie this summer (or sooner is possible). We could wait till his recovery and sign him as a backup for $2.5m at most. Both risky and expensive. But, no other team will touch him. Unless Ortio proves himself to be a capable backup, I doubt we see him on the Flames next season. He wasn't any better or worse than Hiller against Anaheim. But that is not saying much. We can talk all around the roster about holes, but clearly the goalie positions are the gaping holes. We could have 6-top 4 defenders and still lose with what we have left.
  2. I wonder about the real cost of Anderson. How many teams are looking for a starter? You can ask all you want if it's a sellers market. Not so much if it is a buyers market or teams looking for goalie depth for the playoffs. They aren't as willing to send big assets unless it's for a starter. Anderson is a pending RFA, so there are positives and negatives to trading for him. He is due a fairly big raise or a walkaway. Are there teams willing to spend big for a rental or a possibly expensive re-sign? Maybe one or two teams at most.
  3. Agreed. At some point we probably have to come to the realization that Gillies is our best chance at developing a goalie for the near future. Ortio may become a NHL goalie at some point in his career, but it doesn't look promising. I don't know if he was overrated or ruined by wasting a month in the pressbox. I liked what I saw from his limited appearances the last two years, but this year he has regressed.
  4. Ortio against the Gulls 4 GA on 21 shots Poulin against the Condors 4 GA on 32 shots Poulin against the Condors 5 GA on 28 shots, Ortio 2 GA on 20 shots Take your pick as to who deserves more playing time.
  5. Why bother posting at all.
  6. Well Price on a better team than Montreal probably gets you to the SCF. Price on the Flames this year and we are in a playoff spot, as opposed to 2 points from the basement. A low GAA or SV% and we would be able to make up for lack of PP scoring.
  7. That is exactly the problem. Poulin has had runs of a few good games. Ortio seems like one-and-done.
  8. And if you noticed, Poulin is a big part of that. It also helps when you regularly shoot 40+ shots every game. Very few time are they held to below 30.
  9. Actually, he is making $600k on a 1-way contract. If Ramo keeps playing the way he has since being recalled, he may get another contract. Barring a trade for a goalie (Bishop, Anderson, etc.), the Flames may re-sign Ramo. If so, they may try to sign Ortio or Poulin. Neither is particularly attractive NHL options right now, but we need to do something.
  10. On the farm, it looks like Huska is going with Poulin for now. A B2B start for him, as opposed to using Ortio. Ortio's last 2 games: January 8th 6-1 loss, 6 GA (35 shots) January 17th 7-4 win, 4 GA (28 shots) Poulin: January 13th 6-2 win, 2 GA (33 shots) January 16th 0-3 loss, 2 GA, 1 EN (29 shots) January 22nd 2-1 SOW, 1GA (0 goals on shoot out) (31 shots) January 23rd 3-2 OTW, 2GA (26 shots) Not a big sample size, but Poulin seems to be the choice right now. Even after a back to back. Ortio isn't doing himself any favors with his recent games. Hope he picks it up soon, or he won't even get a deal next year.
  11. I always thought Smid was the hardest working Oiler. He played tough against us in the past. But he also made mistakes. Overall, it could have been a good deal for us. Smid today is like Russell in 3-5 years time. You love what they brought, but you wish you didn't have them signed at that point. If we re-sign Russell, you will see the same broken player. Since this about goalies, I will say I thought Brossoit could become an NHL goalie, but I haven't seen that progression to date. He may still yet, but when is he going to get the chance. They have Talbot and Nilsson ahead of him. Laurikainen looks like he could become the better of the two AHL goalies.
  12. Thought it was 4 years, actually 5 years. Only thing wrong was not getting 8 years. Term is fine and $$ are a steal, just wish we could have gone longer.
  13. Mistake as in you could have signed him for longer. No reason to think he won't be our #1D for years to come. Otherwise, an awesome deal for the Flames. He goes to UFA when his deal expires.
  14. The Brodie deal was a mistake and the Flames will pay double for it. They could have locked him up for UFA years, but chose the bridge deal, which was the typical strategy for younger D-men.
  15. I understand your concern, but they are the franchise players on this team, adding Brodie to that list. They are in on about 50% of the scoring on this team. How do you really expect to pay them $4.5m a year, increasing each year and have them agree to it? Monahan's body of work is 2.5 years and is producing at a #1C level. Johnny is scoring at a 1 p/gp pace and should hit 40 goals. Are you saying that you temper that by saying they haven't done enough yet and bridge them until they are worth $8m+? This is likely the one chance we get to lock them up and buy FA years. Sure, you can use bonus money as part of the deal, but that just means their last years are really expensive. Signing them to a flat deal doesn't set them up to get the ROR next deal. ROR's offer sheet set him up to be a $7m player.
  16. I don't think you can compare last season to this season. Hiller had one good game and one ok game where he was tested. Prior to that he played sick where he fell apart, but still got the wins. This season, Ramo took over as starter. Last year it was Hiller. I would expect that you show confidence in the guy that got you there, not just forgetting about him after somebody has a good game or two.
  17. Doing so requires that you show confidence in both, not just the guy winning or playing well. Hiller got his chance after Ramo was brutalized by bad bounces. You want Ramo to get cold? Sit him out until he is needed.
  18. He is getting the next start (deservedly so) based on a SOL. He let in a softie, but overall was good against a team struggling to score. I'm not sure I agree with the strategy of going with the hot hand over who established himself as the #1. Yes, you give the guy who gets a shutout (in a lopsided game) the next start, and 1GA is a good reason to get him a 3rd in a row, but Ramo is the guy that got you to this point. You have to go back to Ramo after the NJD game.
  19. I think Hartley basically said that he wanted the chance to give Hiller a run of games. There is no reason to go back to Ramo after a shutout for Hiller. Not that Hiller was overly great, but he did what he needed to do. The team dominated for him, and never let many quality shots through. Saying that, the choice really depends on the style of goalie required to win any given game. Hiller is described as a "blocking" goalie, while Ramo is a "save" goalie. Hiller will stay deep in the crease and prevent anything directed at the lower 5/6 of the net, but goes down early and stays there to prevent the goals on close to the ice. He tends to get beat in the top part of the net, stick side. Ramo battles every shot with blocker or glove or pads. He tends to get beat low (5 hole) or high, glove side. But he never gives up on a play.
  20. The one-time cost of building roads and other infrastructure is just part of the cost. The annual maintenance costs adding up over 30 years is also extreme. I don't know if that is part of the 500 million or not. Mayors tend to have a short-term view of cities, where they don't want to increase taxes during their terms. They can argue that it's in the best interest of the city, but in reality it is political survival. If the funding model is reasonable and benefits the city for any money/tax exemptions has a long term benefit, then it shouldn't be an issue. I tend to think this was a trial balloon to gauge the public opinion, much like an agent floating $9m per year for Gio. The delay in getting it out there hurt it's viability. In the end, a stadium/arena will get built. There will be a public investment to clean up the area, as there should be.
  21. There never a good time to start a goalie that hasn't played in a long time. His last two starts were wins by the team, in spite of his goaltending. I hope he can regain some of his form (so we can trade him by TDL) because he has not looked like a capable goalie this year.
  22. The knots in my stomach are starting to twist.
  23. If he thinks any team in NA will sign him at this rate, he's grasping at straws. He has to be at least one of the top AHL goalies to get a chance to get a NHL backup role. His body of work this year is not inspiring. Not just his most recnt one, but all of them this season. There are guys getting a chance in the NHL this season that responded by winning their 1st or getting a SO in their first, or even guys like Bernier that improved after playing in the AHL.
  24. His consistency is the only thing right now that bothers me. Poulin had a similar game, but he isn't a prospect. He will likely get the next start though. Ortio has to string the wins together to stay in the net, or at least have good outings. A 3-2 or 2-1 loss is not an issue if he plays well. Ramo struggled a bit after returning from the AHL, but was putting forth good effort. As far as "events of over the last year", it was really just from training camp forward. Whether it is mental or bad conditioning or lack of play, he needs to spend as much time as possible with the coaching staff. And I think that the Flames have to demand that it be a priority right now.
  25. Ortio had another bad outing last night. Mostly was scored on during the PP (2 SHG against) or PK (2 PPG against). Six goals on 35 shots.
