  1. I am as concerned about switching goalies after one game as I am about Smith being the starter. Not a lot of breathing room. Lose game one to the 8th seed and you have lost home ice advantage. Now what? WAS did it last year and almost lost the 1st round.
  2. If they lose it, it's because of Rieder and the water. They need to find a POHO and a GM and a coach. The GM usually hires the GM and the GM hires the coach. If McDavid stays an Oiler, he will be a part of the OBC.
  3. He's had some hard starts recently. Rittich has the only win against SJS. Against LA, Smith is 1-1, Rittich is 1-0 Against ANA, Smth is 2-1, Ritich has not faced them. Against EDM, Smith has not faced them and Rittich is 2-0-1 I would prefer that Rittich get two games in after SJS. Get mentally ready to start.
  4. The Oilers string of luck is toast. McDavid only recent one and I believe they changed the odds the next year. 2016 - beat out by WPG and CBJ 2018 - beat out by Carolina and MTL.
  5. I hope that they get passed in the lottery by two teams that they were a single point behind them overall. That loss is the Flames game. Ultimate stick it to ya pigs.
  6. I have no idea who will get the starts anymore. Start Smith in CGY, yet Rittich has better home record. He gets the iwn against a depleated Ducks team. They didn;t even look dangerous. I'll take the win. Road games against SJS and LA in two nights. Rittich has a better SA% and GAA on the road, but you can;t start him both games. He should get the SJS game. Just need a single point to clinch the division and conference in the first game.
  7. I don;t get the logic. You start the best guy and only give him a night off if he has a eally tough game, like double overtime. Facing the best or the worst, it doesn;t matter.
  8. We seem to have better luck with goalies than forwards and D-men. Ramo wasn't bad but fell victim to playing behind Hiller.
  9. Let me add this to the things to watch..... Darren Dreger‏Verified account @DarrenDreger FollowFollow @DarrenDreger More Calgary Flames are closing in on signing 23 year old KHL prospect goalie, Artyom Zagidulin. Not done yet, but expected to get done.
  10. The risk is minimal. It can only be a one year ELC. At worst, he spends the year in the AHL and we part ways. At best, he replaces Bennett or Czarnik. I think after this season, we will be looking hard at the team and seeing what we have, what we need and what we don't need. Keepers are: JH, Monahan, Lindholm, Tkachuk, Backlund, Ryan, Neal, Mangiapane, Hathaway Gio, Hamonic, Hanifin, Ras, Fanta, Kylington, Valimaki Rittich Bubble guys, whose playoffs will show their value or could be a cap casuality: Bennett, Janko, Czarnik, Frolik, Quine Brodie AHL guys that could make the team: Dube, Philp (depends on how he looks this summer), Gawdin, Phillips Thats a lot of depth with little room for graduating players. The AHL guys have one season under their belts (except Philp). Dube made the team last year out of camp, so he's a shoe in to make the team. The bubble guys could become trade pieces for a goalie or a top 6 RW.
  11. According to Dreger, Flames/Jets/Sens are looking at FA Joakim Nygard. https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/25858/joakim-nygard What could go wrong?
  12. Makes sense to me. They have nothing to lose, so it's pretty loose up there.
  13. Sorry, quoting Wills is akin to quoting Francis. I'm sure he has asked a few guys. Probably after a win like the first against Minny. Wills has his own agenda and listening to him is annoying. He's been pushing Smith down our throats for the entire season. Fine. Have your opinion. Don't try to tell me when the plays add up to a loss, they aren't annoyed by it. They are for sure not going to throw the goalie under the bus. Anyway, enough of this. Said my piece. Agree or not. I'll save my breath.
  14. What is the team going to say publically? Smith's puck-handling scares the heck out of them? It ruins the chances of the team executing a proper breakout? Smith gets ragged on for some things. It's not his playing the puck that bothers them. It's the playing the puck to nobody. Spring JH for a breakaway? Awesome. Everyone wants to see that. Stop the dump in. Awesome. Leads to Flames possession. Clear the zone with the immediate turnaround by the other team? No so good. Freeze the puck behind the net and watch it turn into a goal or a loss of possession? Not so good. Beyond that, all I want to see is the guy that the team has faith in and rewards them with a win. I don't care who he is.
  15. Would need it to be a 2-year deal to have any impact on the draft. By that point, we'll know what we have in Gillies and possibly Parsons. As well, we will have two other goalies in the system (maybe). Assuming we re-sign them and they meet exposure rules by then. As far as Smith goes, he's been looking better, but he's not tracking the puck very well. He's making a lot of secondary saves because he is big. And because he covers the lower part of the net pretty well. Rittich is better on his feet and reaction time. Both goalies would do themselves a favor and not play the puck as often. Keep the other teams guessing. Don't give them any scouting moments, like stripping the [uck when he's holding it behind the net.
  16. Oh, I agree. Below (hope format keeps) is the comps between Smith and Rittich: High Medium Low Rittich .845 .959 .953 Smith .811 .911 .961 Advantage Rittich +.034 Rittich +.048 Smith It only speaks to overall pecentages, but you can see the only area that Smith is ahead is low danger. Not a big difference at all, though for that. The other areas are striking.
  17. I get that. If Smith is going to be the goto guy for the playoffs (round 1), then they need to ensure he gets rest too. It's a double edge sword. Play Smith too much and he burns out or tweaks something. Play SMith too little and he's cold going into the playoffs. If Rittich is the goto guy, then resting him is not quite as urgent, but he needs a few days off in general.
  18. Smith starts again for his 3 game in a row. I would have liked to have Rittich get back in nets again before facing Dallas and possibly SJS. Next week is all bottom feeders, starting with LA the night after SJS. EDIT - Rittich "sick" since the weekend, so that could explain this I guess.
  19. Considering they have failed miserably in B2B games in the past, yes it will. Their margin for error is one loss IIRC. I wonder if the OBC decides to better their odds by demoting players that are playing well. Whoops, I can't name any.
  20. The Oilers get a pretty easy schedule for this week. Play teams the night after we play them. 3 teams in a row like that.
  21. They had scouted Ras from the same team, so they already had seen him play quite a bit. It seemed like a no brainer to draft him, just surprised they waited so long to pull the trigger. Labanc had barely outscored him in his draft year, but was drafted a year earlier. Labanc is probably a good comp for the type of player that Mange can become. Some guys that can score in the AHL never translate to the NHL, but it's starting to look like Bread Eater has found out the secret. Loved the one-timers against VAN. We are really missing that on this team. Perhaps, dare I say, he could use that on the PP?
  22. He needs to go back to food service and invent another over priced burger to offer the crowds. I heard that he was being interviewed by one of the usual Oiler media and in the middle of being asked a tough qustion about who decides things, his cell phone rings with the automated "Darryl Katz calling" announced for everyone to hear. You can't make this stuff up. Blame the water. Blame the GM(s). Blame the coach(s). Blame the 3rd line guy. Blame the former standout goalie. Blame the guy that was traded for the the guy that was traded for Eberle. All we can hope as Flames fans is that the same continues. Keith is the new GM for good. Hitch is extended along with Gully. POHO goes to MacT or KLow or some other cronie.
  23. The general comments hear and the GDT is that Hanifin sucks. I get it. Yet, last year Brodie and Hamonic sucked. For all the games Hanifin has played, he still just a young guy. Gio wasn;t even a full time NHL player at that age. Unlike others, I think he has the room to grow as a player. I do agree about Fanta. He's really just starting to adapt. Playing strongly. If you are shipping out Brodie, then I hope you get a younger C/RW.
  24. Game breakers? I'd say we have about 5 that are on the scoreboard more often than not. Like the other contenders, we have lines of players. JH - 6 point night. Matty - hattie. Monahan - when 100% he is money. Lindholm - dry spell, but has been a game breaker all season. Gio - takes the team on his back. I compare to the contenders and none of them has that single player that dominates by themselves. Maybe a game here and there. Tampa has lines of goal scorers. BOS has a top line and 2nd line. TOR has lines. SJS has lines. WPG has two very good lines. The non-contenders tend to have single players, which is why they are not contenders. Or lines that are limited in goal scoring, like ARI. EDM - obvious. COL - two or three players on one line.
  25. There's a very good chance we re-sign Fanta. Under-appreciated by LA perhaps. Plays big, steady, excellent mentor for rookies. Would like to see if he's also effectove on RD, since it's about our only "weakness" on D. BT loves to make moves before the draft, so there's a good chance we see a move then, using someone like Brodie. Gio is the ultimate mentor for our D. He shows them what it takes to be a great player. Fitness. Attention to detail. Showing up for practice ready.
