  1. The MS sidestory clouds the issue. The Flames always have people's backs when off-ice issues are involved. Whether their nice-guy way of dealing with things has anything to do with it or they perceive no problems. That's the part I don't get. BH and Gully both fired because of lack of results. At least BH had a positive year. Nothing development or coaching of goalies in the NHL has been positive. Players are held accountable. Hiller, Ramo, Ortio..... Players are bought out.... Obviously we don't know the true picture. If it's Talbot over Smith then that's at least a positive. Talbot studied under King Henrik. He might be able to pass on some tips.
  2. Let me say this. Smith never rebounded after his injury 2 years ago and as a 37-38 year old goalie, he never will. He played a lot of games against non playoff teams to regain some confidence. He wasn't any kind of miracle worker in the playoffs. Yes, he made tons of saves, but he let in a lot of shots glove side. No, he's not the only reason we lost. I don't think people are mad that we are looking at Talbot. If anything it's the cycle of retreads. Talbot isn't that bad even playing behind a meh team. Better than Smith. But we are looking at another one to two year stopgap again. We are unwilling and unable to go after Vezina goalies. Lehner will be available. Bob is available. Some of the goalies that had good years are available and we won't be able to sign them. My approach would be to hedge my bets. Sure, sign Talbot to a one year deal. Immediate security, somewhat. Trade for Jarry. Carry three goalies going into camp. Roster deadliine day make that decision about Jarry. Either carry 3 or waive him if he doesn;t look ready. 90% of the teams won;t even consider claiming him, unless they still have a hole. If we decide to carry 3 goalies, it has drawbacks. We can;t healthy scratch 2F. Then again, those healthy scratches rarely get games unless someone is injured.
  3. When Murray was drafted, his numbers were Smith 2018/19 bad on the OHL. It wasn;t until his last season there and until he played in the AHL before he showed very good numbers. Nature vs nurture. I don;t see any success so far with our AHL program. The NHL one seems to cause regression if anything. Rittich was an established goalie before he came here. He was inconsistent there and similar in his 1st year of AHL. He got more consistent, he didn;t get better. I think we can look back and figure out when our current goalie coach was in the AHL. We can see what it's been like since he got to the NHL. AT some point you have to overhaul the program when the picks aren't working out. Gillies and Parsons could have developed better. The talent seemed to be there.
  4. Appreciate the negative stuff to offset the positive stuff. That's what makes this a good place for discussion. Where I think we focus too much is on the the end of season results. We were a team that performed really well for the majority of the season. We had issues. We fixed some of them. There is no right way to build a contender. Lightening in a bottle is what wins cups. STL was worst in the league at one point. It's going to be near impossible for them to do that again. TBL collapsed. Is that going to happen again. What I like is that this team has some of the things you need to build a contender. Getting everything right and going to the finals is tough. Fixing the little problems is a good start. Understanding why some players are struggling is key. Removing the negatives is as well.
  5. We have Gillies and Schneider and Parsons signed that have played in NA. Zag is a great sounding prospect, but may not be ready this year. BT isn't expecting him to crack the lineup. Do you get the sense that Schneider will even be an AHL goalie? I don't. Gillies and Zag will split starts in Stockton, and Parsons gets the lion share in Kansas with Schneider backing up. That assumes we have Rittich and 1b in Calgary. Anything can change, but this is almost identical to last year. Last year Gillies and Parsons got the splits, while MacDonald and Schneider got Kansas. They would move an AHL guy to the ECHL to get more starts. Perhaps one of Gillies and Parsons shows enough in camp/preseason to end up on the NHL roster. If not, then we have a hole in nets. You want to wait till October to deal with it?
  6. Either a Bob type or a Murray in the making. I can't see any team trading a Bob type. And the real Bob is going to blow up the cap. UFA's like Mrazek is as big a risk as Varly. Lehner is probably more "stable", but again will be crazy expensive. Expensive for this team that is. I'm not sure how we have gone from being able to afford $6m+ to being limited to less than $6m. Some teams have more than 2 goalies, one will be lost to waivers. Maybe we should be looking at those guys and making a minor (or major) trade to get the next guy. Parsons may still be the guy, but he has some major hurdles to get over. Gillies is in make or break category and will need to prove at the AHL level he is improving. He will have to be waived the end of the summer IIRC.
  7. Even with Smth playing like crap for 1/2 a season. Even with Rittich changing his game to match Smith and letting in crap goals........ We were 2nd in the league in goal differential. Every team makes poor reads at times.
  8. I wouldn't worry. It's going to be bargain bin shopping for the backup. Jarry is a pipe dream, but PITTS might like to have an overpaid, slower D like Stone.
  9. I never got the sense that Philly was bringing back Talbot. 4 games played. Elliott at least gave them a reasonable SA% and GAA. Better than Smith. I seriously doubt that Talbot is going to get multiple offers close to $2m. I don't think he's any worse than Koskinen, but that's not saying much. EDM won't touch him and he won't go there anyway. I would like to make a trade for Jarry and sign Talbot to less than $2m, preferably closer to $1m. One gets sent down come October. Unless a big trade is happening, there are not a lot of good options available. Jarry is more of a risk, but potentially a better long term asset. Talbot is at least a NHL goalie, but he may not be able to recapture his form.
  10. The only plus side for any team was him playing a few seasons in VAN. As it stands, he was a NHL player over a guy like Shinkaruk and has less baggage than Rychel. Not a bad PK'er, but I think we have better.
  11. Dobber Prospects had the following to say about Zagidulin: June 2019 – Artyom Zagidulin was signed to a one-year ELC by the Calgary Flames. The 23-tear-old goaltender had a breakout season in the KHL by posting a .924 save percentage with a 1.96 GAA. As a free agent, he was lured to the NHL by Calgary most likely due to the uncertainty of their NHL tandem moving forward. At this point, his athleticism and calm movements set him up for success at the NHL level. Zagidulin is a butterfly-style goaltender who protects the bottom of the net very well. He is an agile netminder who moves quick post-to-post. He has a tendency to sit a little low once he goes to the butterfly and that might be something he works on improving moving forward. Overall, he has a similar style to Flames prospect Tyler Parsons and should provide strong internal competition should an injury arise at the NHL level. – Joel Henderson
  12. I think they tend to structure the pay based on what they need the goalie for. Smith would not be paid to be a #1 and Rittich backup. It would have to be 1a/1b pay, which is 1.5m up to 3m, unless you are paying for a stud.
  13. Lehner and Mrazic are probably the best that could be available. Neither is going to be cheap. I hate always having to go with the cheap option, but we don't have a lot of choice it seems. If we are looking at cheap, it should start with guys like Jarry. Low risk. Only way I go with Talbot is if the deal in 2 year or less and the AAV is around $1m, so that you can bury it and start again if it doesn't work out. Jarry has one year left at $675k so that is the least risky cap wise.
  14. I like the pick. Only 2-3 years out before we get to banish him to California. Maybe we can retire JS before then and revamp the coaching in Stockton.
  15. Goalies get waived the first day of the season all over the league. Far better ones have gone unclaimed. Gillies may be a cheap claim, but there are far too few available spots in the NHL for a team to take a chance once the season starts. McBackup was claimed because he had good stats. Binnington wasn't claimed even with his AHL record. Gillies contract is completely gone off the cap if he gets demoted (waived and sent) to the AHL. It doesn't have any negative cap issues with it.
  16. That is possible, but I would suggest that they don't go throught the summer assuming Gillies will make the cut. Last year, we had Rittich and Gillies as possibles for the NHL backup. We know how that ended up. Expecting a guy to go from a handfull of NHL starts and playing all of last season in the AHL to a backup capable of a 1b role is unlikely. Rittich was slated for 25 starts last year and won the job by Smith crapping the bed early. 25 starts is reasonable for a backup if your starter can play 59 games. I doubt they project Rittich for that many, so Gillies would need to play closer to 40 games. He's not ready. The Flames are more likely to sign a guy they can expect to play 40+ games. Talbot, Lehner, Varly, Mrazek and others fit that bill. Cost will be a big factor, so they probably want to stay under $3m, unless the guy is a winner and can play 50+ games. Or the trade option is also there. Smith may be an option, but they are just looking at it because of loyalty. He doesn't fit the bill anymore. He wants to play 60 games and be paid like a starter. He wants to be the playoff hero. His decline is obvious and the Flames need to look at better options.
  17. Perhaps that's something they re-evaluate this summer. I hope so. Overall, I can think of very few games where overplaying the puck won the game, while the number of losses caused by same is easier to point out. Probably equals out, so my point is why bother. Which of the SCF final teams employed that strategy. Spoiler alert. NONE. During the season, I think BP was blinded to needing it to win games. After reflection and depending on what they have as a starter/backup combo, that could be done here. If Rittich struggles with it, why force it on the goalie. His confidence is far more important than some ideals.
  18. If you listen to BT, he talks about a deal and situation that makes sense or both sides. What else is hoing to say. He talked the same way about Brouwer last June. Finding a fit. Makes sense for both sides. Another year older. Possibly another 2017/18 season with him on board. BT is going to find whayever he can and maybe he gets it right. He'd be re-signed if he was going in that direction. Rittich is the focus for re-signing. And Tkachuk. And Bennett. Plus the RFA's. A trade or UFA singing for a backup is a stronger possibility than Smith taking $1.7m He's not spending $6m if it includes Smith. This isn;t a hatred of the guy, just been there done that. 2 seasons without overall success and our #1 still hasn;t played a minute of playoffs. Strange, because I could have sword that he had a really good season. But, I digress
  19. Jarry is only on the trade block because he is waiver fodder. We try to park him there and he will be picked up. At worst, our defense has equal abilities of clearing the front of the net. Originally, I was suggesting Trouba for Brodie++, but that's a tough sell. There's going to be a lot of teams that screw up this summer. SJS overpaying for an aging D. Marner getting 10m forcing them to sell Ladri and/or Kapanen. FLA going all Bob and Bread, but NYR ending up with Breadman. If I was thinking about Reimer, he would have a short leash. He would be the one parked there.
  20. I think they have two guys they can run with, so Jarry is expendable. DeSmith had better NHL numbers recently. Jarry could bring them back a prospect or pick. Or maybe, we go crazy: Kessel (2m retained) + Maatta + Jarry for Brodie + Janko + Czarnik We buy out Stone. Trade Frolik for Zucker. Trade Maatta to TOR for Kadri. JH-Monahan-Kessel Tkachuk-Kadri-Zucker Bennett-Backlund-Lindholm Mangiapane-Ryan-Neal Gio-Ras Hanifin-Hamonic Valimaki-Kylington Fantenberg Rittich Jarry
  21. PITTS owes us for the Iggy trade.
  22. He's on a one way this season and is waiver eligible. Reasonable chance we lose him for nothing if he fails to make the opening night roster as a backup.
  23. I would lean towards Jarry of the two. Had reasonable results playing on a offense-first team like the Pens. Gillies has never been able to get better since his surgury. He's always looked overwhelmed until he lets in 2 goals, then locks it down. Bad glove hand, plays small.
  24. It looks like both PITTS and WPG have an extra goaie in the fold. Jarry in PITTS Comrie in WPG Both are waiver eligible. Both have had some good seasons in the AHL, while Jarry has at least played decently in the NHL (not so much recently). Gillies has not had a good season in some time. Any interest in either potential castoff?
  25. What would be nice is if any of these guys get a chanve to show at the NHL level. We signed two guys last; one played in the AHL until they released him whil the other was injured. Rittich is probably one of the few that ever was given a shot. I won;t bother with the list, since there was a lot of lesser talent. The point is that it's hard to continue to sign guys if the previous ones never get a crack. On the other hand, we contnue to trot out players that are basically replacement level who proceed to do little. I would like to actually sign a player, get him adjusted to the ice and let his talent work its way out. But anyway, I would like to see them sign Nygard.
