  1. Finally a goal tending performance that gave us a chance to win, Bravo!
  2. More importantly, Ramo did not let in any stinkers. Sure 4 got past him but none were the type that made you say OMG. As far as the fluky goal goes to win the game, 100% of the shots you don’t make never go in, it’s never a bad idea to direct the puck at the net. Byfug got one like that against us a couple weeks ago, and you see other players trying it all the time. A very high percentage of all NHL goals could be considered fluky in some way or another.
  3. After allowing 6 deflating goals against the Canadians this mighty be our opportunity to slip Ortio through waivers and send to Stockton. I guess it depends how long Hiller needs to heel.
  4. What a roller coaster for these GT’s. A few days ago Ramo is sent to Stockton thinking he is done………… Hiller then goes down to injury and Ortio has a couple of poor performances. Ramo gets called back and has a chance at redemption. If Ramo plays well over the coming week I could see Ortio sent down when Hiller becomes available. Round and round and round and round and………
  5. Ortio was falling to his knees every time the NYI directed the puck at the net. The scouting report was obviously shoot high because that is what the NYI were doing. Ortio appeared to be struggling with the high shots, probably because his head was below the cross bar the majority of the time when attempting to make a save. Given the situation with the three GT's, I agree with keeping Ortio on the team but he is not our saviour, Hiller is obviously and presently the better GT.
  6. Ortio is #3 GT at the moment. You don’t play a #3 GT while 1A and 1B are both still here and playing reasonably well. The only reason Ortio is still here is because we can’t risk losing him on waivers………so he sits. The Flames appear to be trying to maximize the return on one of the two vets by playing them. IMO, Ortio will not play until either a vet is moved or when the Flames have completely written off one of the vets and expect nothing in return. In the meantime, Ortio sits and the vets get the work load.
  7. The position has been in turbidity for two years. With 44 shots against, a 5-1 loss was flattering. VAN had several other Grade A opportunities that Ramo stopped. To pin this on the GT would be down right ignorant. Neither Price or Lungqvist or any other GT would have won that game last evening. Hartley is not toying with the GT’s, he knows them better than anybody. Hartley now has Hiller Sat evening in VAN. Who would you be starting in VAN after watching Hiller get shelled in Calgary two nights earlier? The solution in net is not obvious, but we have 3 decent options thanks to the decision making thus far. The players need to stop reading the articles about how good they are and how much they have improved in the offseason, it’s time for them to get to work!
  8. Ok you are now BT standing in front of the media scrum after Ortio claimed off waivers; Mr. Treliving, yesterday the Flames attempted to send Ortio to Stockton, the process required him to clear waivers first. Today the EDM Oilers claimed Ortio and the Flames lost their best young goalie prospect in recent time. Mr. Treliving, the Flames appeared to have made a huge miscalculation, with two veteran goalies remaining, with neither signed beyond this year, could you please explain what lead to this decision and why a talented young goalie with huge upside is no longer with this club?
  9. With Ortio invited to the AHL all-star game last season, one could conclude that he is a top 4 AHL goalie. He played excellent on that 4 game road trip thru CA last winter as well. At this stage of the game I don’t see the Flames taking the risk of losing Ortio on waivers. Particularly when one/or both of the other goalies do not have a future with the team beyond this season. Ortio is here to stay.
  10. I believe we have an extremely good defense with our existing top 7. Not including the young ones knocking on the door. Assuming playoffs, this is the type of depth you want entering the playoffs. I see Russell signing an extension before TDL and then subtractions made on this grossly over spent position in the off season. Gio Hamilton Brodie Wideman Russell Smid Engelland
  11. Detroit’s new arena is under construction and slated to open in 2017 with a price tag of $450M. Edmonton’s new arean is under construction and slated to open in 2016 with a price tag of $480M. The Flames have already offered to kick in $200M of their money for a public building. You want to ask them to kick in another $250M? If they did that they could go build a new area for themselves and say the heck with the city. Let the city worry about their own fieldhouse, their own stadium and their contaminated land. The Flames ownership and management are top notch people who have not only been successful in the business world but have given back largely to this community. I believe they have taken the high road and considered all the needs this city has, and then attempted the impossible task of solving all the issues in one large project. Has there been another ownership group in the NHL/CFL who has subsidized a city owned building with $200M? This deal is about making the community better while watching our teams compete in modern day facilities. Unfortunately, economics was not my calling. At this point, I could not even pretend to understand this proposal and financial model in its entirety. What I do have a certain level of confidence in is first impressions. My impression of the CalgaryNext presentation and proposal is that two sides (City Aldermen and Flames ownership) have a common interest. Behind the scenes, they appear to have been bouncing ideas off of one another, and over a period of time, creating a model (in its infancy) that when presented to the public would have a chance at success. The discussion at least has now begun, I suspect that a detail or two will need ironed out before this proposal becomes a project.
  12. The tax dollars generated by the city from these 2 car lots and a Grey Hound Station over the next 100 years on this DT prime river front property probably doesn’t even cover the costs required to monitor the subsurface contamination. In 100 years’ time the land will still be contaminated and worthless. In a concept similar to the one below, the tax dollars generated by the city over the next 100 years is anyone’s guess. In this scenario the land is recyclable, meaning demolition and re-development can occur with changing times. I cannot concept the amount of money the city could generate from a fully developed West Village. If you look at just the LRT, imagine how many people a day would be paying $3 per ticket for an LRT trip going to and from the area while living, working and playing? Twenty years ago you could ride the transit for less than a buck, how much will it cost 20 yrs from now? I agree that some businesses will relocate to the West Village, leaving behind their old buildings. But the older abandoned building will continue to generate tax dollars for the city and provide opportunity for other businesses looking for cheaper rent.
  13. The Flames are offering to kick in $200M (out of pocket) and $250M (Flames ticket increase) which equates to 50% of the new facility cost. Another 23% has already been allocated by the city to a new fieldhouse. The city will be the owner of remediated (cleaned up) land and a state of the art facilities, surrounded by sought after land by developers that will become a cash cow for the city. As the land sits now, it is a waste land, bringing next to zero money back to the city. As a neighbour, if I came to you and said “hoarder, if you clean up all that garbage your hording in your back yard, I will offer to finance new landscaping and upgrades for your yard, dollar for dollar up to a total cost of $890M. Would you slam the door in my face and continue to hoard or would you accept this deal, becoming the nicest property in the area?
  14. World Class Cities Require World Class Airports To draw people from around the world using non-stop flights To watch World Class Entertainment, at World Class Facilities
  15. http://calgaryherald.com/news/local-news/reaction-to-flames-arena-plans The attached article talks of a clean-up done in the 1990’s. The so called “cleanup” was minimal, a more accurate statement would have been “containment”. A 650m slurry wall was installed along the south embankment of the Bow River, the purpose of the slurry wall was to “contain” the hazardous creosote chemical from seeping into the adjacent Bow River. According to the article, creosote has since migrated under the river towards the north and has been found in basements in Hillhurst on the north side of the river. If the contamination is going under the river to the north, how much has been going down the river to the east? This cleanup will not be cheap, the safety restrictions and monitoring attached to this will be suffocating. When the work does begin, the invoices for engineers and contractors will add up quickly. I was impressed with Ken Kings presentation today. We need a new arena, we need a new stadium, we need a new field house, and we need to clean up the contaminated land. Hopefully intelligent minds can move this proposal forward in a way that benefits all those who call this city home.
  16. That's good news if true. A two year deal would be ideal.
  17. The Flames have until July 1 to pony up and try to get a deal done with Ramo. If no deal can be made by then, he becomes a FA on July 1 and all teams will be able to negotiate with him at that point. This is a different situation. Gio still has a year remaining on his deal. My understanding is that the NHL allows teams to extend contracts up to 1 yr prior to expiring. July 1 of this year is 1 year prior for Gio.
  18. We can’t have 2 goalies each making 4.5, someone has to go. We had an excellent completion between the two but neither goalie stood above the other. They each played equally well and poorly at times. Rather than letting Ramo hit UFA and losing an asset, BT could take advantage of the situation by trading Hiller and resigning Ramo. Another two year deal would be ideal. We still end up with only one of Hiller or Ramo but we bring in an addition piece with a Hiller trade. With all things being equal I think we should go with the younger Ramo.
  19. Did anyone notice Ramo’s fine display of goaltending last evening? He kept us in the game for as long as he possibly could. No fault to him in the loss. The man is unsigned going into next season and has earned a new deal imo. You don’t let assets like this walk (see Cammilari), you re-sign them and keep your options open. He is a proven NHL goaltender that could probably be re-signed at a very reasonable cost and term. The younger guys will have to wait to seize their opportunity just like all the goaltender before them.
  20. Me, right now, I sign Ramo to another two year deal. We have a proven 1A, 1B goaltending duo that works. They get along, no BS, they support one another and they both have contributed to the success with their greedy moments between the pipes. The altering favoritism throughout the year settled nothing, we still need both. Ramo was the favourite coming down the stretch, until what appeared to be a freak stand-up solo injury. Ortio needs to wait his turn, which could be another year (or injury), but right now there are no vacancies in the position. The younger 27yr old Ramo has earned another 2yr deal imo. However, a high draft pick or promising young prospect for either goaltender would likely change BT position.
  21. Schlemko tries too hard? So if 100% is the most you can contribute, how much would you like to see him contribute moving forward? Maybe 85-90% in a game? ----------- Our defense has routinely and countlessly made that pass up through center ice all year. I’ve seen them do it 6 time successfully in a single game. The forwards job is to get a stick on the puck at mid-ice and deflect it down the ice, preventing icing while keeping head up, and then go for a line change. Bennett had his head down and was attempting to take possession of it. Please, let’s not blame that on a veteran defenseman while Bennett is playing in his 4th NHL game. ------------- If you can tell what Schlemko is thinking then the opposition can tell what Schlemko is thinking and that’s a bad thing. All you need to know Peeps is that when Schlemko is on the ice the Flames are very seldom getting scored on.
  22. I have Schlemko moving up the ladder rather quickly. I see him fitting in anywhere from 3-6 right now. That's not a slight against our existing D but rather a compliment to Schlemko himself. We have no young D in our farm system that are even close to providing what he is does right now. Pleasant similarities to when we picked up Russell. They both just quietly do their job and get better and better with each game. Schelmko will only get better as he becomes more comfortable with the team and their system.
  23. Where do you think CGY and COL would have finished in the standings this year had they swapped their top 4 D for the entire season? Would COL have been a favorite to win the SC?
  24. Putting your assistant captain on the third pairing in a reduced role may not be the best use of the player, particularity when the player has proven he can play 25-30 min a game without being a liability. Would you consider putting Hudler (assistant captain) on the third or fourth line in a reduced role to spread the skill around? Do you think Morrison (or other promising young Dmen) would sign here if Russell and/or Wideman were blocking the door as third pairing D?
  25. The foundation to our blue-line is in place. I want to improve from the bottom pairing up. I want our young D competing, working and earning their position on this team. I want our young D pushing our vets to become better. I want a homegrown solution because young top 4 potential dmen do not exist on the trade market. It’s nice to pretend that a NYI young rockstar would look nice in Red but fact is those players are never truly available, it’s a pipe dream. I don’t want Russell and Wideman playing on the bottom pairing with reduced minutes. They would not only be less effective but it would be deflating to our young prospects knowing that they need to beat them out for a job. Impossible. I don’t want another 5m dman on this team chewing up previous cap and messing with chemistry. I want to pay our existing and proven top 4 what they’re worth and leave the bottom pairing open for serious competition with our dmen already under contract and prospects from the farm. ---------- Our dmen continue to take the heat for our mostly inexperienced and under developed forwards. How often do we see our forwards cycle the puck for any length of time in the Ozone? Very seldom. The strength required to sustain an Ozone cycle is the same strength required to bust up a Dzone cycle. Right now we are not very good at either. When our forwards mature we will have overall improved team defense, reducing shots and goals against plus reduced time we are hemmed in our Dzone. It also starts in the face-off circle, how are we there?
