  1. Speaking of baseball pitchers. The Jays are taking their best young pitcher out of the starting rotation because the analytics says his elbow likely will blow up if he pitches too many innings. So he is slated to soon hit the bullpen where he can be utilized a bit less.

My reason for bringing this up is the data people look at it as the thing to do now. Prevention will rule here.

How soon before the analysts in hockey start to say goalies need to take (X)games off per year to prevent (X) from happening? I don't know if JJ was thinking along these lines when he was talking operations on the upswing in hockey, but the stats are taking over baseball with the pitchers now.

I think a prime example is Kipper. We never found a quality back up for him and I think had we done that, he'd have been even better.

we will see if this year's new tandem has the right equation to get the job done. How many will it require for both for us to win.

Really it is a win-win for both goalies with a roughly 50-30 split.

  2. I disagree. For example Gillies lost pretty much all of last year due to the operation on his hip. He is behind where he could have been. Apparently he has been playing with this injury for a few years now and changed his style to compensate.. Wow... what might be now he is repaired.

The acquisition of Elliott only gives us more time to develope our prospects properly. Goalies are usually the slowest to develop of all positions, so you might want to temper your expectations a bit, on how good we are with prospects on this coming seasons results.

I think last season was an anomaly with a few young goalies given the chance to perform early on in their careers. The expansion draft could change dramatically some clubs goalie depth.

I think it was smart for BT to give our present goalie tandem 1 year contracts but I expect if they perform close to their capabilities, then expect an extension to at least Elliott mid season.

I think I heard that Demko had the same surgery as Gillies. They say he is better than ever. But then again, gillies did miss the year.

  3. I don't worry about Monahan and Johnny signing.  It will happen by WC.  It's only July, so there is a lot of time.  I think the Nakladal deal is basically in place, just not going to be finalized until after the big deals get done.  Nakladal wanted to come to Calgary and wants to come back.  The Flames like him.  The fact that he hasn't signed anywhere else kind of gives you an idea of the discussions they have already had.

I was wondering about that too and thought the same thing about Nakladal. He must have a deal ready in hand and just have to submit it once there's an idea of what the cap space is like? But then again, we're allowed to go over a certain amount.

I wonder if being right up against the cap, would that make it harder for Brad Treliving to trade a Wideman, or give him less leverage?

  4. I think they'll lose one of Tkachuk/Marner but i'll be a bit suprised if they lose both. Leafs have already publically commented that they are skepital that Marner is ready for the NHL. Max Jones, Cliff Pu, Olli Jeolevi, Victor Mete and PIccinich are all back and they've got a few younger Dman who looked good in limited minutes they'll look to make the next step. Plus they landed Janne Kuokannen out of Finland in the import draft who is a real solid player and fit in great with a Dale Hunter coached team.

Knights will be good, they always are as Hunter always finds away. I think they'll be in a bit of trouble if they lose both Marner and Tkachuk but still be a real solid team. But I agree with conundrum that people are wrong is they are assuming Parsons rep is inflated because he played behind a great team. The Knights pressed alot, and they gave up alot of odd man rushes the other way, Parsons had to be good alot of nights.

That's really good to hear. I just hope we can develop someone into a long term goalie solution for us!

  5. I agree, and was thrilled when we drafted him.  It'll likely be a couple years at the earliest before he gets a real shot in the AHL but hopefully he continues his solid play and the Flames start to back-up several pro-ready goalies.

As a second thought, I'm really interested to see what equipment changes the NHL goes with this year and next and its impact on all goalies.

Parsons will be the starter next year as well, and who knows if Marner and Tkachuk will make the NHL or not. So he won't necessarily have an all-star team to help him out.

Which players are returning to the team next year?

  6. If we don't play Taylor, we will clearly get nothing for him, so he has little or no trade value at this point.

Trade value and actual value are not always the same, however.

Had the Flames actually played him these last 10 games, then one of two thing would happen:

    1.  They'd pick first overall

    2.   He would play well, and would have considerable trade value

Currently, we are not positioned to get the first overall pick, and Taylor has zero trade value.

As for going behind your net, that is a Very typical error made by NHL rookie goaltenders, and it is directly related to adjusting their calculation of the speed and time involved in players coming towards them.  It resolves itself in a very short number of games.  So does being "shaky".

We wouldn't know, because we rarely if ever give them that opportunity to begin with.  We don't even know what to look for anymore.

I think shaky is a bad thing and you can just tell. He's not that young either. If management and the coaches wanted him here, he would be here. If they felt he was the future, he'd be here. If other teams wanted him they would have signed him. Do you not think there are scouts watching the AHL, or other AHL team's coaches talking to GM's saying this guy is good? He's not in the NHL for a reason. Good luck Danny.

  7. I say we resign Jmac and see what we have in Ramo and the swiss dude, Joey has looked pretty stellar at times and could handle split starts with Ramo if he turns out to be an option. Im more then comfortable with how he has played this year since coming in and think that with the way he has handled himself in the midst of all the drama he has earned another contract.

Joey just doesn't panic. He's solid. You can see it in his game. All of the other goalies this year in certain times during a game (pressure situations) seem to panic. It's the fact he's a vet. Kipper is good too, only he's just not in it this year... But Joey Mac has to be re-signed.

  8. Wow, we have a lot of goalies.

I just don't get what was wrong with beating Vancouver 4-2 with Taylor in net making 29 saves.

People saying he "doesn't look" like an NHL goaltender.  Yet anyone who watched the game would attest that he out-goaltended Luongo hands down.

Question:  What should an NHL team do when they don't have confidence in their NHL goaltenders, and they have the best goaltender in the AHL, at 26 years of age?

    ?

    Anyone?

p.s...Not saying that Taylor will lead us to the cup.  Just saying we have no reason to panic, other than the fact that panicking is the only thing we know how to do when it comes to goaltenders.

I watched and I was actually scared for most of the night while he was in net. He looked a bit shaky to me. On top of that, his handling the puck and giving it away behind the net was scary too. I think the Flames coaches and management saw it this way too, otherwise he would have stayed up. If he was that good he would be here over MacDonald.

MacDonald looks way more stable than Taylor.

What should they do? Put him out there as trade-bait and see what other teams would offer. If we get anything for him, it's a bonus as he was a FA. And then you also wonder why no one signed him while he was a FA and playing on an AHL contract if he was regarded as an NHL goalie where there are at least a few teams out there in need of a quality back-up to sure up their goaltending.

  9. Kipper - wants to stay, but may approve a trade in the offseason after his life settles down. I think his life was happening too fast for him at the moment and wanted a stable environment to way his options. He probably isn't ready for retirement if his compete is still in there, but who knows. His mind hasn't been in it all year. I don't blame him if you think your team wants to move you throughout the year, plus having the baby and an apparent rocky birth...

MacDonald - should be re-signed. I like his play and has been the back-up we've lacked over the last 5 or 6 years.

Ramo - should be signed and played here with Mac next year alternating starts or play the hot goalie until Ramo takes over.

    Berra - AHL

Taylor - traded for a pick similar to Karlsson.

    Brust - let go

Irving - traded for a pick

    Gillies - remain in college

Brossoit - Fight with Berra for starters job in the AHL, he needs minutes in pro so alternate him and Berra or we will ruin him as a prospect.

    Ortio - stay in Europe
