  1. I think Johnson is a starter and this not not just a hot streak. Nothing in his game tells me it's a fluke or a streak. He goes about every play the same way, makes a 1st save, controls the rebound, and that's what you ask of a good quality starter.

When you've been a career backup, what games do you usually have to play? The 2nd game of back-to-backs. Games where the team is tired. Plus the rthym is usually off, and the team doesn't know what to expect or have chemistry. Communication with the players is important.

We are witnessing a goalie coming into his own.

I know you are stuck on the idea that the Flames do not know how to develop goalies.  Probably nobody will make any arguments that convince you otherwise.

If Rittich's age means he should be better able to start right now, then why rush Gillies?  Gillies came back from injury to a goalie on a hot streak.  If you are the Flames do you ignore a goalie you scouted and signed because you have another one that you drafted?  I thought that was what made the Flames bad in the past.  Ignoring talent they have and letting them walk or not playing them.

We have two NHL goalies this season.  Johnson was pegged to be the backup but is on a hot streak.  Elliott will or should get back into form, so why would an NHL club decide to bring in an AHL backup or starter while they are still developing?  Doesn't make any sense.  Every team has goalies in the AHL.  None of them are getting called up unless its an injury replacement or the current goalies are crap.  Gillies has 19 games of AHL experience and 3 years of college, where he played a much shorter than AHL schedule.

It wouldn't surprise me if Gillies takes two more years to develop. Maybe one or two more year in the AHL. He could come up when he is 24 or 25. Is that considered a failure or good developing?

Is it that we have bad developing or bad drafting of goaltenders?

Lots of goaltenders start to come into their prime in their late 20s, into their 30s ala kipper, tim thomas etc. Yes hes on a hot streak right now, I dont think anyone is expecting him to stay at a .949 pct thats he been at but hes not going to drop down to .880 suddenly he will probably stay at .920 to 9.25 on avg whch is really good.  The odds are good that he will be a decent goalie, even a backup into next year.

We arent buying high and selling low, there is plenty of evidence that elliot will turn it around by trade deadline and then we can sell him off. If he doesnt turn it around oh well the flames will have a choice to make, as they wont be able to trade him if he doesnt turn it around, at least I really doubt it. Its not blockading development, neither gilles or rittich were NHL ready this year, and they may not be NHL ready next year. There is no reason to go into the season with spots open for rookies, thats how you end up like edmonton did for 10 years. The competition is there, and if the flames roll into next year with two vets in net again, well gilles or rittich better earn his spot. The NHL is not a development league, stop acting like its a personal affront to the goalies in the AAA that we dont have a spot for them.

They are calling an ex Oiler "probably" the 2nd best goalie in the NHL.

I know he didn't become that, they did almost ruin him. The spot was there, but they also had so many other holes in their game that there was no way Dubynk would look good. Talbot is doing ok, but wouldn't they want dubynk now?

As much as the team has confidence in the goalie right now, they can't just run him until he starts losing.  They need to use both goalies and have them both playing at a top level.  As well, they have a total of 82 games to manage, so we need to make sure that we have two goalie capable of playing as a #1, in case there are any injuries.

Exactly. I was just defending Johnson's play. I know that he had a lot to prove still, but he is playing really well, close to a #1....

i want to get Elliott going as well. I hope to get an even more intense battles between the pipes.

There was a time when goalies rarely came into their own until about age 30.  These days however some pundits feel they are over the hill at age 30. I am old school who thinks new school is usually more hype than substance.

I think it's just too hard to judge. Even though the game has changed a lot recently, and in the time of Roloson. But he came into his own in his 30s and played competitively until he was 40. Even if Johnson is turning into a #1 - not saying he is, but it's possible - he could still have a lot in him... If it is only 6 or 7 years, that's still a pretty decent amount of time to be a starter, around 300 games.

  6. Can't deny that he has been playing well for the past two seasons and it is possible that Johnson has just figured it out.

Johnson is very calm and composed and uses his size to his advantage. He barely gets rattled and rarely gets out of position.

For goalies it takes a little longer and the fact that he only played 115 games in the NHL tells me he had to pay his dues and figure out the game in the AHL.

If we are going to play Wideman and sit one of Jokipakka or Kulak, why not at least try something constructive:

    Gio-Hamilton

    Brodie-Wideman

    Kulak-Engelland

Haven't seen anything great out of Brodie-Engelland.  Kulak-Engelland was one of our better pairs.

Gio-Wideman was fine last few games, but not if you are forced to play Brodie-Engelland.

For some reason, Gio-Hamilton hasn't had much traction from the coaches.  I guess they are experts.

That probably does look a bit better. Gio seems to need Brodie though.

You gotta feel for Elliot.  It seems each game the 1st or 2nd shot against goes in.  But you look at all those early goals and you can rarely fault the goalie.  Look at the first three goals last night (didn't see the 4th), none of them were Elliot's fault.  We carry the play then give up A++ chances and all of a sudden we're chasing the game, then we get sloppy and give up more A++ chances.  Elliot's gotta be completely deflated, but you really can't put the losses on him.  All this talk coming into the season of being a "connected" group...we've yet to see it consistently.

This is what I've been saying the last two years in here. We needed better goaltending. The goalie's we have are better than what we've had the last 3 seasons. It is the team D that needs to improve now.

  9. Play Giordano Hamilton on the PP.

I just think everyone is trying to do too much now and it might be time to preach a simplified approach. Or are we going to get to game 55 and realize we are out and then all the weight is off the shoulders and just play? Then there is another false sense of improved play and only 10 points out of a playoff spot.

Klimchuk has very underrated hockey sense. His hockey IQ is very high, probaby the highest of the Flames prosepct pool to be honest IMO.

I don't thikn what he is doing is that much of a suprised. Klimchuk has great physical tools and a great hockey IQ, he just hasn't been healthy to put a full work into a summer to get his strength up to a point he could contribute. He did that this summer.

And that's what I mean, to get into openings and positions is a skill. Getting into passing lanes is hockey sense.

It is good to see. I was worried he wasn't progressing.

I agree robrob, everyone is way over-thinking and trying to make the perfect setup pass and shot, just shoot the damn puck. We have some muscle for down low and in front of the net and they should utilize this more.

Until they change the way they pass, we can't tell what is going on. I think they have to preach some simplified pp.

That was a strange aberation as Montoya is usually 1 of the best backups in the league. Even now he's 3-1-1.

Did any one see Max Domi drop Kessler with 1 punch? :o:lol:

I didn't see the game but caught that @ the SN site.

Kessler is an ex-Canuck but I still don't like that (.)

    I like what you did there! But I think he's a bit of a bigger ( .  )

I believe that GG made a point of saying he wouldn't restrict the gifted players and confining them to a box.  Gaudreau is not struggling because of the system; he is struggling because he is trying to create offense with no support.  Everytime he shoots from the top of the circle it's because there is no options.  They are one-and-done and then back to the D-zone.  By the time he sees the puck again, it's at the end of his shift.

One player that amazes me is Donskoi.  That guy is super-fast.  If we had a player like that with JH, we would see a lot of scoring chances.

I actually always thought that was how Gaudreau's line always played, only they had higher percentage scoring chances. It really looks like Monahan and Gaudreau have never played on the same line before.

I would agree there is issues but the improvements are coming. This team is getting better. No matter what you say about these D pairings the flames team D is not near as big of a tire fire as it was last year

The one thing I notice with the pp are the decisions made in forcing passes.  It was the same with Hartley so I think it's a personnel issue more than the playbook.

Paases are consistently being made through the other team's guys and it is easy to stop. It is hard to judge what is making it so bad.

  15. I've seen about 3 games all year.  But the ones I did see, it seems like most are going through the motions, no great opportunities or big excitement. Sure they have the puck, but the scoring chances aren't high quality. The D still have mishaps that cost the game as well. Plus untimely penalties hurt us too.

Gilles hasn't been played 11 games yet on the Ahl. Total. Talk of him being up here is extremely premature.

I'd much rather see him spend at least the next two season in the A. He's got lots to prove and no reason to be rushed.

I say see where he is at at the end of the year. Evaluate and let him fight for a spot in camp. He will earn it when he is ready. Could be two years, but he isn't super young with his college experience against young men.

Our current struggles over the past few seasons, has been defense and defensive coverage. Goal tending is not our issue this year as even coaches and the talking heads agree. Unlike the offensive dman in the league the Doughy's, Keith's, Karlson's, Weber's, Ekblad they actually can play defense as well. Our dcore is offensively oriented and defensively challenged. Our GA average is directly aligned with how well our dman have played not our goalies. Reality check in place, average goal tending is not going to cover up how bad our defense is. This has been an issue for awhile but has been over looked based on offensive production, it has now been exposed.

I would say for some of us, it was exposed a few years ago, but that year we made the playoffs it was in spite of the numbers, while goalies made key saves atvthe most opportune times. I've been preaching team D as a problem the whole time, and that lies directly on our offensive D guys.

Teams are going to check the #1 line harder and I wonder if the offense will struggle because of it.

It'll be imperative for the team to play picture perfect D in order to get wins. Do we have the D to do it?

Well ya, i'm talking next season.  We may as well ruin Elliott this year and keep Gillies as far away from this year's team as possible.

I just wonder if the problem will be fixed by next year.?

Pretty sure the plan since last season was we needed a stop gap until Jon Gillies is NHL ready.  It's too bad Gillies missed basically all last season on rehab.  Otherwise, he might've already been here now.

They were talking contract extension with Elliott but i hope that doesn't happen at this point.  I'd rather run with Gillies and Johnson next season if we had to.

I don't want to run with Gillies until the team improves the overall team game. It could ruin his confidence if he gets shellacked like we do now.

  20. When we said that we need to change goaltending, my argument was always that we need to play better as a team otherwise it doesn't matter what goalies we get.

Johnson played well, sure, but he almost didn't get those points in both games. The Canucks game was probably the best played so far? But still was one we could've lost outright without a point.

We cant win if the team doesnt play well, I don't care how great your goalie is, even Roy let in how many in a game for Montreal?

I agree as well.  His skating is fine and he plays the position well enough.  With the true enforcer gone from the game Engelland’s role on this team is even more important.  He is the only player on this team (minus Bolig) that keeps the opposition tough guy/ahole honest.  See game 1 vs Lucic.

Something i noticed last noght too was, guys like Engelland keeping the other team's guys in line. When they crashed the net there was more response than what I've seen since well before Hartley.
