  1. i wasnt saying who was better than who, thats another debate. i was just saying that we need to keep all 3 in the system.. trading any of them is a bad idea until we have a trio left again
  2. i did also hear a good article the other day that made lots of sense. Good teams have a goalie depth of 3. 2 up and #3 pushing from the farm. Look at Detroit, lost their top 2 but still had Mrazek(sp?) to toss in there.. this is why i dont see the trade off of one, until we have a new #3(eg , maybe Gilles on the farm next year ?).. if anything were to happen , im definitely not comfortable with whoever is our #4 right now
  3. Not sure about 4-5 straight starts but I say we play him in anaheim no matter what. ? Sooner or later we gotta win there I agree its too small a sample to implant him and trade one. Thats more of a question for the draft and before you even consider trading Ramo, he needs to be resigned.. hes too good to just get a low pick for his rights. Personally I say we go into camp with all 3 and let them decide whos odd man out. I think ortio deserves to be up next year, and for his development it makes more sense to keep Ramo. They will push each other, behind Hiller he plays every 4-5 games
  4. Just curios, is Gillies now too old for the WJHC or did last years performance knock him out of consideration?
  5. No kidding.. id say 90% of our wins this year will require a goaltender to steal it. So far theyre doing that. Until last night i would have said hiller was missing that robbery factor but goaltending is no longer a concern. I fully expect Ramo to get resigned.
  6. From the time Burke said it , thru BT and now, one thing has remained constant. That was them stating they needed a Veteran Backup. Not a Veteran, but a veteran backup.is he there to push Ramo? You bet . If Ramo plays like a sieve will Hiller get the starts? Absolutely. But the organization seems clear that Ramo has the confidence of the team right now so im not too concerned about him being pushed out. On the flipside, this isnt like last year.when we had 2 fresh goalies and they ran a guy who was not in the teams future (jmac). Hiller is a legitimate starter, if you dont play your level he will take your job and I for one, although I have full full faith Ramo will hold that job, will have no problem if Hiller plays more if Ramo falters. Now its a competition On a side note gotta say was really happy to see Jmac sign in Montreal. Its a perfect place and the right situation for a quality backup like him.
  7. my point exactly i see you're new, Welcome! you'll learn to get my sarcasm soon
  8. ok.. so once again the Flames have another "backup" I'm really confused, but then I realized, there hasnt been a Goaltender you've liked yet ! outside of Ortio, who even you agree that hes still in development and needs time to grow, there hasn't been one tender in the system that I've heard you say you liked?? I'd really like to hear some names.. just who is it you would have gone out to get? Here we go get the perfect guy.. a proven starter, consistent level of play.. able to steal games. Hes older so he has the drive to get his minutes, but he knows for now that Ramo is the guy. He will push Ramo, and be good himself.. and all see is "another backup quality goalie" Do they have to win a cup?.. cuz theres a ton of very average goalies who have won cups whos teams made them look good, sometimes even made them legends (Crawford,Dryden,Niemi, Osgood,Ward) So, as you say we are in need of a true starter, who would you go get , that would also satisfy the goal to bring a goalie up thru the system, and not bury them (eg.. a Kipper who backup means professional benchwarmer) heck, the catch of the Day was Miller, who couldn't even get ST LOUIS thru the 1st round? some stud he is.. please tell me.. just who would be good enough?
  9. I duno.. dude didnt come into the league until he was 26 . wasted all his prime years in Europe.. only has a SV% of .916. I was hoping for a "real NHL Goalie" ..Everybody knows if youre not in the North American System by 22 you may as well just pack it in and go home, but I guess he'll do until we can find somebody good.
  10. Thats hilarious:) to clarify tho I didnt mean Joey, I meant the new kid. Give him another (final?) Year in junior then let him have Alaska while Gillies becomes the man in Adirondack Ill be very disappointed if they resign Joey..great depth guy, but right now the kids gotta play
  11. i think there's a big difference between .911 and .891 effectively , assuming an average of 30 shots per game, and your starter should be starting approx 55 games minimum, that is the difference between allowing 2-3, 0r 3-4 goals per game I believe all people are saying , is that we want to see Ortio developed properly , we don't need to rush him in , Ramo is capable of holding the fort, and Ortio is quite capable of filling in if he goes down , but hes not ready for full time duty yet . i gotta admit , i love and admire your passion for the team and your players.. i think where it gets heated is when you use the same set of stats and information to explain why Ramo isnt NHL starter quality because hes older and Ortio is because hes younger. ideally how this season goes, is Ortio tears up the A again , Ramo gets an extension and Ortio is full time back up / 1B next year and they battle it out .. and by then Gillies signs gets to start handling the A duties, Macdonald potentially in Alaska
  12. i think we are all in agreement that the future is trending to Ortio, but at the same time now is not his time. hes not yet ready to carry the load, and until he is they are totally correct in leaving him on the farm to get the minutes and become all that he can be. whether you believe ramo is a true starter or not , really , is irrelevant and youre right we can have this argument / debate all year long .. but the truth is he keeps us in games and most nights gives us a chance to win. thats exactly what this team needs right now. doesnt matter who you put back there, they wont make a significant difference in the results from where this team is right now defense and development wise. You could put Jonathan Quick or King Henry back there, and the results will be the same. to go out and get your " true starting goalie" ,, would be a waste of resources, money and in the end only hurt Ortio. Right now Ramo is the guy , and the best guy for the job .
  13. Basically next season , Ramo is flames #1, Ortio is Heat #1. i believe Roy will / shoudl back up Ortio. At this moment , dont think we have any additional starter prospects lined up for Alaska. Until I heard he is retiring, I had thought Giguere was the perfect choice for Flames backup .. but now that hes not available the options get dicey. The perfect backup is one that can give you 25-30 quality starts, with an expectation of winning. We need to avoid the over the hill gang(Jmac) who were never good enough to be starters, but at the same time players who have the ability to be #1's if the big guy goes down . The ideal guy is one who will fight for his playing minutes, Push the starter but not pout being the #2 guy. Somebody that knows his role is backup and likes it that way. Somebody more of a mentor. Ideally is someone who is still starter quality , but no longer able to handle the rigors of 50-60 starts Hiller would be great , but doubt he comes here. Montoya I'm not sold on , hes flamed out and been a disappointment in his career so far .Nabokov likely still wants a starter job, I do think Bryzgalov could be considered. I do need to do some more research into who's available, but for now, whats totally clear is they want a veteran backup .. Ortio isnt ready to start and as such should be in Adirondack starting lots, and Ramo is the starter until somebody takes it from him.
  14. I agree with the 1x yr deal, but I dont believe you bring Ortio or whoever up from the farm until they're #1 material. Burke has the right idea..let them play lots til they're ready. Thats why I think JS is perfect. .quality guy, but no illusions of being #1 , and not just some cast off to play a few games a year. Basically a starter quality backup. I can also see him going the route of Sean Burke and becoming a great goalie coach when hes done.so he could slide right into coaching our goalies right after. He was after all coached by the best himself, I just feel its the perfect choice
  15. Been taking a look around and a great name we should target as our backup is JS Giguere. By signing Berra to a one way,3 yr 1.4 per, its obvious he likely wont be resigned. He made backup salary last year and likely will come cheap on a 1-2 yr. Hes a leader, a winner and would be a great mentor for Ramo and then Ortio. Hes not #1 caliber anymore but easily a 20-30 game quality backup. For some reason I think he will fall off a lot of teams radars who are shopping this summer so I dont think he'd be hard to land.
  16. This explains it more now. He wont be returning from his personal reasons, and the club has already spoken to Eli Wilson about the position http://www.calgarysun.com/2014/06/18/calgary-flames-in-market-for-goaltending-coach
  17. This is one of those"didnt see it coming but surprised it took this long" scenarios. Yes he did ok, but when you look at what other teams are getting from their tenders its apparent an upgrade was needed. Just my own personal opinion but would like to see David Marcoux back, or even better get Sean Burke to follow Brad here from Phoenix. The latter obviously would depend on his current contract status. I had read a ways back Burke was thinking of working more closely with Hockey Canada..so a Calgary move would benefit there.. Likely a pipedream..but will be interesting to see what direction BT goes there
  18. On a funny but ironic sidenote. .we all rag on feaster for his "best (insert position here) not in the NHL" comments..but the first time I ever heard that phrase get drummed, was Brian Burke in Toronto during the Jonas Gustaffson sweepstakes. .
  19. Have to admit im mixed. If ortio is up next year and Gillies would get to develop his game on the heat, that woukd be a step up and beneficial to his game. If it ends up he gets slotted to Alaska then hes better off doing one more season of college.what they do with iMac should dictate what happens. Personally I think they save a year of his pro contract and leave him there one more year.
  20. I think we forget...how old was kipper when he joined Calgary? Arguably when he began his rise?..oh right..26. He was at his best 26-32 Ironically this blogs purpose was to show that Luongo will be a top goalie until he's 37.
  21. Whats wrong? Its been Almost 24 hrs since news stated Reimer is going to ask to be traded at season's end and nobodys clamoring for us to be all over that??? But in seriousness, as far as Ortio goes, this is the perfect time to let him get nhl experience. While on the one hand yes, the mandate is to play to win, its a no pressure situation. Hes not going to affect our playoff position either way, he can play his game and even if he plays well and loses every game, so what. Then he comes to camp next year with a knowledge of what it takes. I think it makes him better. But agreed, if he was shaky and getting roasted every game that would be different.
  22. Where do people get their info? Ramo never "refused" to come over.he had a nhl contract and he played it to the end.he talked about looking forward to signing in Calgary before kipper was retiring and even spoke of looking forward to playing with "his idol" As for ortio, I think hes earned a right to play for a spot on the big club next year..but although hes looked good he still looks like a year in the ahl wouldn't hurt him. For all the past and present berra doubters..what does it say when Roy, Sakic and likely the best goalie coach in hockey pursued him, gave up a round 2 pick and just signed him to a 3 year extension?? It says we just gave up a stud goalie...just wait..
  23. Anyone heard an updated eta on Ramo? Likely this carousel on the Heat is just til jmac goes back. As much as I do think its a bit too soon, seeing Ortio he reminds me a lot of kipper, if ortio keeps getting work he deserves to be here
  24. Definitely sorry to see Berra go...but definitely feel vindicated that 2 of the greatest players to ever play the game thought highly enough of our"non nhl caliber goaltender" to cough up a high middle 2nd rounder for him, ..not bad for a over the hill european who doesnt deserve to be here eh? Totally impressed with Ortio tonight...I agree with burke, if he plays he stays. Ramo#1, ortio getting every 4th start or so.just hope hartley doesnt start running jmac 5 in a row again though
  25. You're not going to believe this, but im in 98% agreement with you We are definitely making our goaltenders earn their keep. The only areas I may disagree is I dont believe Brossoit was tossed aside, I think its as was said, hes the player the oilers wanted in the Smid trade and we were comfortable enough with ortio and gillies to comply. Smid has been a great add for us. I also don't believe they have written off signing gillies, just decided its better for his development to mature more in college so he can jump to the ahl instead of struggling in Alaska. I think you see him signed after next season, in time to take over from ortio
