  1. Julien Gauthier signed. Some rumors Flames were interested but he's off the board
  2. Lyle was a good first move to address this, but i'm intrested to see what the Flames do with the Wranglers as well. I think it's safe to assume your losing Pelletier and Duher there, in addition to loss of Philips. Dryden Hunt - Zary - Schwindt Stromgren - Kerins - Klapka Ciona - Rooney - Bishop ?? - Nikolayev - Pospisil Poirier - De Simone Solovyov - Lyle Kuznetsov - ?? Poolman That is pretty shallow and putting a lot of pressure on Stromgren/Ciona to be good early. Not to mention, like you suggested, it leaves them in a tough spot with call ups too. I would suspect the Flames are going to want to address this too. I know that doesn't account for Ben Jones and Pettersen yet, but I think the point still holds even with them in the fold.
  3. Players that go undrafted in their first year of eligibility are eligible to sign ELCs as undrafted players. The catch is that you have to offer them a full standard ELC and you have to do so before they get re assigned to junior. Once they are back in junior they are no longer eligible for a contract and need to go through the draft again. So in Tulk's case yes you can but it's a 3 year ELC. So you are committing to him for 5 years (including 2 slide years) A true undrafted player (ie no more draft eligibility) can sign PTOs in order to bring them to camp later. In the vast majority of cases the teams are just trying to build a relationship with the player that benefits them later. Like in Connor Mackey's case where the Flames got a leg up because they brought him to camp.
  4. Didn't realize until seeing this that Tulk went un drafted. Small surprise there. Think he and McCoy are the 2 most intriguing names there. Wonder if McCoy might land himself a contract if he does well. He showed well in tracking data but isn't the best skater so went undrafted. Kykkanen is interesting and someone worth having on the radar. Big goalie who has flashed a bit throughout his career. Nice to see Sergeev there. Rest are probably camp filler.
  5. If i had to guess Zadina was likely put on waiver to communicate trade intentions. There is really nothing to be gained cap wise for Detroit sending him down right now and he's going to have to be put on waivers again in the pre season if they actually want to assign him so this is likely a case of telling everyone this player is available for trade. Waivers is few intricacies to them that make them less attractive to just go around claiming players First off you have to have the cap space to acquire them (or I guess feel ok to exceed the cap to do so). Roughly have the league right now (probably slightly more actually) can't do that for Zadina's deal. Players claimed on waivers need to stay on your NHL roster or if you are going to put them back on waivers they have to be offered to the original team first to re claim them. This puts a dent into the whole collect assets idea of using waivers. So given they need to stay on your roster now you have to have room for them to play. When you look at waivers it's almost always depth players looking for a shot, well what team doesn't have players in a similar boat they want to give a shot to? Think bias is at play here where teams likely feel what they have and what they've developed is the better way to go. Last but not least there is the risk factor. Zadina being on a 2 year deal means what the backup plan if it doesn't work out? other teams didn't want him so now your stuck. Sure you can "bury" they money but that's about 800K of dead cap space on your books now. If he was on a 1 year deal i'd guess someone would have jumped at it, i'm betting it was the 2nd year that made teams balk. I'm sure there is a small degree of conclusions that goes on but it's tough for me to see 32 GMs all coming together to make sure their wavier claims go through, and like I said in this case there is no benefit to Detroit waiving him.
  6. This is an all time bad FA class. Been a few bargain signings but that's mostly a reflection of the fact that most teams don't have the cap room to sign players as aggressively as they would in the past. I think the Flames need more the bargain signing route anyway so this class fits what they should be doing.
  7. Ah yes double. I'm not sure how it compares but it makes him a no in my eyes.
  8. Up until Nov 1st it goes based on the previous year's standings in reverse (not draft order but standings). So until Nov 1st the Flames have the 17th priority. After Nov 1st it goes by current standings and changes as they do. I am not aware of rule that removes a team's priority if they select a player.
  9. I wouldn't necessarily say "no" but given his injury I would lean towards passing. I have a hard time seeing him coming back and being impactful this year.
  10. Mine too. I hope the Wildcats get some more depth this year and Morin plays less. Based on some early viewings and looking at his profile I have a bit of a theory that some of the "warts" he gets noted are due to playing too much. Less could be more with him. But really, really good value in the 2nd round.
  11. That's' the 2022 roster. No details are out for this year yet.
  12. Right now the following are UFAs and would likely sign for half of what Zadina costs. Denis Malgin, Jesper Boqvist, Max Comtois, Noah Gregor, Julian Gauthier, Mason Shaw. I'd want to be sure I can't get any of those players before I claimed Zadine. 1.8 is not exactly cheap for what he gives you (which isn't much).
  13. I’m actually pretty surprised they qualified those guys. I do wonder about someone like Petersen. Does he get a shot with their focus on youth? He’s been knocking on the door.
  14. Megan Chayka (private analytics company) does sytlistic profiles for prospects based on their analytically profile. While it looks like she has Honzek rated a little lower (22) compares he compares to Timo Meir. That'll play.... Also look who made it to 35 on the list...
  15. Yup Junior next year (where it sounds like he will be the captain) and then the option would exists for CHL or AHL the following year. A cool unique them about him is if they sign him to an eLC soon then he can play in the AHL and still have his contract slide. Coolest thing about this pick is the Flames comp for him is Mikko Rantanen..... that would be something
  16. Here's a shocker Conroy is excited! In all seriousness it sounds like they are really high on the guys they got and in most cases thought they had to trade up to get many of them.
  17. I didn't catch the interview but apparently Conroy mentioned post draft he doesn't feel they are close on anything. Edit: Lebrun with an update
  18. I'm not sure if the focus on size is a change in philosophy or just a byproduct of this draft. Lots was unique about this draft but the ability to get size/skill later on in the draft is pretty up there. In a normal draft once you get to the end of round 1 your size/skill combo is pretty much done (without some other red flag). This draft you had players going in round 3 that had borderline 1st round profiles.
  19. I'd dispute the competitive and IQ part. I think generally speaking these 2 are at the core of the Flames draft philosophy really since Feaster. I think what has varied between GMs and draft classes is the mix of size, speed and skill. I think this draft focused a bit more of size without sacrificing much in skill. Their last pick is basically all size and no skill and their 2nd round is high skill, low size but the rest are pretty good blends actually. I don't think they added a ton of speed to the pool but I would also say it's almost impossible to get everything. I think conundrumed put this well in that each time the Flames picked there was a higher looking celling player on the board but they tended to be a bit smaller. I think ideally you would have wanted them to add a D or 2 in the middle rounds. I think those are the 2 things we'll want to watch with this class. But overall I think the positives are they added some size without sacrificing too much in skill. That to me is the biggest take away.
  20. I like what they did. Think the Flames got a little lost during he COVID years, as did many teams, but I think this draft got them back to where they were and what the valued before that. Hopefully the results are similar too. Think they adding a really nice blend of upside, skill and size to their pool and it's much, much stronger than it was 2 days ago.
  21. If you like consensus drafting and Bob McKenzie they you should be pretty impressed so far
  22. Look a RS! So we can stop complaining for at least like 5 mins right?
  23. I too thought there were better profiles available and a couple of dmen I thought were bigger needs. but for me it's a lot like the first round. Sure you can argue for a different direction but I definitely don't think this is a bad pick by any means. Profiles like his are generally not found in the 3rd round. I think it's really clear the Flames had a mission to add some size to their forward ranks here and to their credit they are doing that without sacrificing much on skill. Perhaps they went to far but only time will tell.
  24. I took the interest as we'll move Hanifin elsewhere and then circle back to Sanheim as his replacement.
