  1. Ya I think it's a reasonable argument to question whether they will get better goaltending but I also don't think it's likely they will get worse. Even with the same level of goaltending last year, they are a very good team.
  2. While true, from November 15th on the flames had the 4th most wins in the NHL. That's a sample size of 66 games. So for 3/4 of the season they were a very good team and were terrible for 1 quarter. The bad start is the small sample size. I dont get the "stars aligning or luck" argument because imo last year was he opposite. The flames had horrible puck luck at times and overal got avg to below avg goaltending, and their stars struggled so I'm not seeing how the stars aligned for them last year. They were very healthy though so it's very possible they get a key injury or two this season and that would have an impact.
  3. This is fair and I think when you compare Liljegren to Valamaki it's going to come down to personal preference. I think they were in the same grouping so I don't think the Flames made a mistake by any means. Sure you can argue the RH shot, and for that reason I did favor Liljegren as well, but it was really a coin clip between the two. Liljegren is a RH shot and has a flair/dynamic element to his game. I think they both have similar upsides (top pairing) but Valamaki has the higher floor and was the "safer" of the two for lack of a better term. He just goes about his business in a much more steady way than Liljegren. See how they develop but i don't think the Flames made a mistake.

I agree that the focus should be Gilles taking over at the AHL level and being consistent there. I don't see any reason why the focus should be on the NHL team when he has only had 1 AHL season and it was pretty up and down. Not very common for goalies to be an NHL option after 1 AHL season, even the best of the best prospects. I get some mention Gilles age but i'm personally not a huge fan of looking at it based on age, experience matters more IMO.
  5. I don't forget Kylingtons age, but when you see him make the same plays at all different levels of hockey it's a valid concern. Not saying he has no future but I do think it's more limited than most people think and you will always have to live with the ups and downs and the risk/reward that's all.

The reason I haven't lost faith in Gilles is he still showed you high end ability last year. When I look at the game he played I see alot of inconsistency from game to game. You saw, and heard about, some fantastic games and then you heard about some real clunkers that I think drove down his save % (which is pretty flawed stat to begin with but it's all we got at that level). I think inconsistency should be expected from a goalie who missed an entire year of development. That is why I actually don't consider last season a set back at all. I'd only be consdiered if he lost that ability to take over a game but by all accounts he didn't. So gets another year to iron things out but I just don't agree with the notion he is off track. If last year was his rookie season and he was say 22 years old I feel like people's attitude around his season would be more positive.
  7. I agree. I'm not optimistic that this part of his game will ever go away as I just don't think he has very good hockey sense, i'd say its average. Brodie has very good hockey sense, Yes will make the odd brain cramp usually on an outlet pass, but 90% of the time Brodie makes the right read. I don't think the issue with Brodie is poor decision making, its that he struggles with outlet passes as in all over aspects of the game Brodie almost always makes the right read.

I agree that Parsons playing ECHL really isn't an issue and would still be preferable to junior as it is better competition so I think it is definitely advancing his career. May not be as common but it's also not as common to see someone like Parsons with a later birthdate and 3 full seasons under his belt with the accomplishments he has. Have to tailor the approach ot the situation you have. Also between the crazy AHL playing schedule and injuries I think its very likely and easy to get Parsons 10-12 AHL games. Flames were very healthy last year from a goaltender perspective in the organization and odds are that won't happen again.

FWIW, there was basically no statistical evidence that supports the Flames D played much better once Stone and Bartowski were inserted. Any improvement was marginal at best. I think the flames win streak was Elliott getting hot and playing like he is capable when he gets hot.

Comparing 2% to overall save percentage versus 1 category isn't a fair comparison. 2% is only a 17 goal difference based on how many high danger chances the Flames gave up last year and again that would be offset by the fact Mason is better in both other categories People forget too the flames are very good at limiting high danger chances. Top 10 last season.

2% difference is pretty minimal. Especially considering it's more than offset by Mason being better in the other 2 categories. If it was 4-5 % I would get it. Either way way it's moot. He isn't here and smith is so it's fine I just don't think it was the right direction.

Seeing what Steve Mason signed for today, I definetly would have preferred the flames go that route and save the assets rather than trading for smith. Pretty had to argue smith is an upgrade over Mason and It's marginal at best. One was free and one the Flames gave up a lot for in trade. Too bad.

If you believe what the NHL tells you... yes they only talk about fit and interest and have zero salary discussions for an entire week....

Because burying a player cost you a roster spot, contract spot, and ice time from a prospect you want to develop. Carolina is deep in D prospects and probably doesn't want Murphy "clogging" things up.

Can't say this for sure, but given i've heard Carolina has wanted Murphy gone for a while I think in order to get Lack for cheap and get Carolina to eat money they probably had to take Murphy.

Carolina has no use for either and have been rumoured to be shopping both for some time. Here they get rid of 2 assets they don't want, clear salary and roster space and not have to give up an asset to do it. Makes a lot of sense from Carolina's perspective. Murphy wa never going to play on that d core once they got TVR

I'm fine with this. You really arnt giving up much so it's worth it. Not a Murphy fan and I don't think he is an nhler but it gives you depth as a RH shot Lack will be cost effective which is nice. The lack in Vancouver I liked a lot so if he can even get back to 80% of that this will be good. If not well then backup will be an issue. He was pretty bad in Carolina.

Guess it depends on salaries. I was surprised until I looked into it, but it looks like it's not very realistic to pay a backup under a mill. Seems all of them are getting more. It's close between Kinkaid and Bernier though, I just like Bernier's experience more, but it's close.

    Goaltending

I'm not so sure I agree. I think his days as a starter are clearly done and he is a 1B at best. The fact that most of the teams looking for that appear to be pursuing other options make me thinks he isn't that sought after. I would be comfortable paying him up to 2 million. What I like about Bernier is he has the ability to step up and play in the even of injury/inconsistent play, and play fairly well. I'm not sure Kinkaid has that.
  21. cross16

    Goaltending

he is, but i'm not really interested. If you can't put up at least avg stats playing behind one of the best team defenses in the league I don't think you are worth bringing here.

    Goaltending

If Friedman's list is right, it's really down to Kinkaid and Bernier as the most sensible options via UFA. I don't mind Kinkaid, but I prefer Bernier.

That from Elliott Friedman. Intersting for 2 reasons. 1 sounds like NIlsson may not be an option, but interestingly enough Bernier is absent from that list. I'm not his biggest fan but on a 1 year deal he is a solid option as a backup and the fact that he may not be drawing much interest is interesting. Could make him a possibility

I think if you were upset about the price of Hamonic you'd be even more upset abuot what those guys would cost. I also happen to think Robin Lehner is really overrated. Smith is a better goalie IMO.

I've seen him play both wings. But could be an option if plan is Ferland to play RW Johnny - Mony - Ferland Tkachuk - Backs - Frolik Marleau - Bennett - whoever.... Not hard to find a fit. Flames badly need someone who can score and ideally should get more speed in their top 6, Marleau fits both. I'm not saying signing him, but it makes complete sense to have interest.
