But that is not a small difference, its a huge one. Doing what Crawford does for 60 games is significantly more valuable that Elliott for his 40 games. I don't think you are giving enough credit to how difficult it is to find that consistent net minder, nor giving enough value to that level of consistency. Even in your example you said Crawford was only 13th in save % but then ignore that 3 goalies ahead of him were backups (Darling, Raanta, Nilsson). If you want to assume that those 3 could have done that over a full season then fine but I would suggest to you history shows its not that easy. If you have a goalie that can post better than average stats over 55 plus game you have a top 15 goalie in the NHL right there. Thus, why I say your definition of average is pretty unrealistic when you mention Crawford.

Much more. Darling was a pending UFA and Raanta has 1 more year under contract so his value is much higher.

Have to agree. I can't imagine the Flames have, or are prepapred to give up, the amount of assets it would take to get both MAF and Raanta. That's not a very good standard then for an "average" goalie. Crawford is one of the top 10 netminders in the league right now and has been for several seasons. I thikn you are probably going to give up more assets for Raanta then you would MAF. MAF needs to be dealt and carries a cap hit/situation that few teams can take. Raanta doesn't and just about every team in the league could acquire him if they wanted to. I think he's probably going to cost more to be honest.
  4. Yes but 2 of them also sent bankrupt or were forced to sell mostly because of the cost associated with financing those arenas. But your right there are better way to do it without a pubic pissing match. Even though it's the norm I still think it's a shame
  5. It's not great but unfortunately its standard operating procedure when pro sports teams negotiate with municipalities. Flames arn't any different and are operating out of the same playbook as everyone else.
  6. I think you are being extremely unfair to the city. Do you know who commissioned and paid for a report to look into the feasibility of CalgaryNext? the city. Flames didn't do a dime worth a research on what the actual cost would be to CalgaryNext, they only told us what it would cost to build the arena and then mislead the public on the actual "benefit". It was the City that did the research into the scope and cost of the project and the data really showed how much the Flames mislead the numbers. Before the suggested Vic park they also looked into the feasibility, they spoke to the Stampede about a land swap, they looking into zoning to see that a CRL is already approved for Vic park so financing won't be a hurdle and mapped it as part of their future transit plans. Again, Flames did zip. Just because the City prefers to conduct the negotiations outside the public space doesn't mean they arn't doing any work. I would actually argue that the City has put in far more work here than the Flames have. All the Flames did is come up with a half baked proposal riddiled with flaws and then the City has come in and actually done the research and data on it. And we shouldn't want this to wind up like Edmonton. That was a very public and at times nasty negotiation that resulted in Edmonton being absolutely bent over a barrel. I certainly don't want the City to wind up doing what Edmonton did.

Maybe but depends on what he wants. If he wants to play, start, and play for a good team there really isn't another option outside Calgary that can offer him that. Flames are probably on the list i'm sure (Mackenzie "guaranteed" it I believe), but i'm not sure I see it as a huge hindrance because i'm not seeing a better opportunity for him than the Flames. Flames are basically the only team that can basically guarantee him the starters job plus a chance to win.
  8. Fully agree, it rings pretty hollow iMO, Ok so you go to Seattle or Quebec and you get a beautiful building but how much more revenue are we actually talking about considering you are leaving a market like Calgary with some of highest salaries around and a ton of corporate sponsors willing to shell out? Standard procedure to threaten to move but I can't see it at all.

For what its worth, Treliving clarified today that if the Flames deal Elliott's rights or re-sign him at any point (before or after July 1 doesn't matter) they have to send the Blues their 2018 3rd Rounder.

I'm a fan of smith personally. If the cost was reasonable I'd be very interested. Chyka can say whatever he wants but smith doesn't have a lot if trade value at his age and contract level.
  11. The standard pro sports vs the local municipatity threats/negotiations are picking up in full force. King first mentioned threats to move and now this had to LOL at this Always hope you can avoid this, but it always seems to come to this unfortunately.
  12. I guess the Blackhawks were interested in Rutta after all
  13. Franson is exactly what all of this year's FA crop is. Not ideal fits in the top 4, will probably be paid more than you want, and while you can argue there are certain positive skills they all bring, they really aren't ideal fits. I actually like Franson but as a bottom pairing dman and i'm not really keen on the idea of the Flames continuing to have to dedicate 4-5 million every year to fill their bottom pair. This year's FA crop should be nothing than short term fall backs. I'll be disappointed if the Flames plan in the off season is to add to their top 4 via FA because the corp sucks and I think this year's playoffs have demonstrated how important a good and mobile top 4 defense is. There isn't anyone i'm interested in, at any contract value, in FA for a top 4 spot on the Flames.
  14. At soon to be 27 and 350 NHL games under his belt it's difficult for me to imagine there is much improvement left in Stone. The only thing is I do find that sometimes players who have major knee injuries take a year or more to get back to full strength so maybe he gets some more mobility back. Given that I think he came as advertised i'm not sure you can expect much. Looking into more and more since the season ended the less i'm interested in bringing Stone back unless he is pretty cheap. I do think a 1 or 2 year deal is possible becuase I don't expect much of a market for him so he is a solid fall back option if they can't trade for an upgrade but that should be the prefered route. I think the biggest thing i've picked up on in these playoffs if you really need to be mobile, deep, and be able to move the puck on the backend and given that the Flames right now don't look great back there that should be a high priority.

Off the top of my head the only 2 goalies that won cups with average level goaltending are Detroit with Osgood and Chicago with Niemi. Everyone else won with good to great goaltending. However, what doesn't get mention enough is timing. Is cam Ward a great goalie? Most would say no but he was very good when Carolina won the cup. Not always about having the best goalie, Montreal has proven that, but whose goalie is playing the best at that time.
  16. I'm not a huge fan of bringing back Stone, but I do agree that if if was between Stone and Alzner i'd bring back Stone. Similar overal impacts, IMO, but you get the RH shot and you already know he works with Brodie.
  17. Ya the physical Regehr comparison never quite materialized. for a few years he was stil a good shutdown blueliner but lately he's really tailed off. Just makes no sense to me to spend $ on him maybe getting it back
  18. You can count on 1 hand how many times he's fought in his NHL career. I'm assuming you mean snarl/physicality like those 2 bring? Not IMO. I don't see Alzner play a ton but when i have, both in junior and pro, I have not seen any type of nastiness or physicality. He relies more on smooth skating and hockey IQ in his own zone as opposed to his size/strength.
  19. and you may be right but I have a tough time seeing it myself. Outside of the Calgary connection does he fit anything they are looking for? RH shot to play with Brodie? No Physical/hard to play against? Not really Good possession guy? Nope Ability to transition? sup par. I just don't think he fits anything that they are looking for other than he has the height/weight metrics they would like. I think if he had played his junior hockey in Edmonton of Moose Jaw we likely wouldn't even be discussing him.

If it was a first and Gilles that's a no brainer yes but if they wanted one of the D prospects then I would want them to eat 1 mill in salary, and probably add something in on their side, but if they did i'd do it. One of the best goalies in the league and really no reason why he can't stay at that level for at least 5-6 years. You get that without giving up anything off your roster and I think you need to pull the trigger. Schneider would make the Flames an instant contender in the West.
  21. Alzner would be a terrible player to sign and if the flames do he'll be Brouwer 2.0, I would guarantee that. He is a really bad fit for what calgary is looking for and honestly outside of his height and weight he really brings nothing the flames are looking for. i hope the flames stay far, far away from Alzner.

See and I don't agree and would in fact argue the opposite. I think in almost all cases the teams that are at risk of losing backup/younger goalies would prefer that they do. There is no team at risk of losing their starter and IMO losing a backup goalie is of the least amoutn of consequence. Easily replaced and then you keep the rest of your team intact so I actually think there are less teams now that would want to deal a goalie becuase they'd prefer to keep them and hope Vegas takes them in the draft. I think prices are higher now becuse if you want to talk that team into dealing them that team is going to price in not just what does the goalie asset cost but what is the cost to me if I deal said goalie PLUS then lost another member of my team. I think once the expansion draft is over and teams don't have to worry about protection list, exposure rules etc and the fact that Vegas will take a few goalies I actually think you will see more availability and prices come down. There are so few teams that are really looking for goaltending that I don't see the demand really changing that much. The fact that Flames are the only ones that have a protection spot open really isn't the advantage I think people are making it out to be. There are still going to be one of the very few teams looking for a starter once the expansion draft is over.

What does everyone think is more plausible. That Treliving is make a conscious decision to not make a deal before the expansion draft for his own reasons? or that he's made his calls and found that a combination of availability and prices means that it will make more sense to pursue deals after the expansion draft? I'm in the latter camp 100%.
  24. cross16

    Goaltending

This. I don't think the expansion draft is going to make many goalies available and the ones that will be arnt really well worth trading for. Flames are likely better off to wait and I bet that's what they've found out when they've made their calls.
