  1. Neal has 8 goals and i'm still not convinced he'll end the season with 20.
  2. I thought Bennett's penalty last night was as much on the bench as him. It was a really poor change and no communication that the D was still getting into place so if you are Bennett you are seeing a guy getting an easy breakaway. It actually was not a bad penalty to take given the circumstance and what he would have saw. I hate being this guy, but I am starting to wonder about the communication between Treliving and Peters. It makes no sense to sign Bennett to the contract they did to have Peters deploy him the way he is being deployed. Bennett has basically become his filler and his glue guy, which IMO makes it really hard to expect any sort of expectations out of him especially given this is still a young player who has been bounced around basically his whole career. They should have traded him if this was the plan. His play and his contract don't make him overly desirable right now, nor would the price be any good. Really, really poor asset management here from the Flames.
  3. I agree, but I will say i think that's good karma considering a missed high stick in Colorado potentially cost them a point there. but no questions, that Tkachuk goal was a gift. Should not have counted.
  4. To be a little fair to Neal I do think it's frustrating the the Flames had a really up and down PP last year and could not find more ways to use him. The only frustration I have in this is Neal has 4 PP goals and the 2nd unit here still looks like a tire fire.
  5. Alex Chiasson scored 22 goals last year for the Oilers. Ty Rattie looked like a stud in preseason playing a top 6 role. of course Neals numbers were going to bounce back. How much and does it make the Oilers better remains to be seen IMO. I know this is going to remain a story but it really shouldn’t be. I’ve heard more than enough stories that tell me Neal just had to go. I don’t think there was an option not would he look like that here.
  6. 2 seasons ago Neal had 6 goals in his first 4 games and 10 in his first 17, wound up with 25 for the season. Color me very skeptical this is going to keep up. I'll give him this, he looks far more engaged from what i've seen. There was maybe a month or 2 all last season where I would call Neal engaged so he does appear motivated. however, he doesn't look any faster so while the start is cool i'm not sure this is going to last. But i could also really care less what he does. Wasn't going to happen here anyway.

Not what I would do but far from the worst thing either.

Interesting thing to point out is not 1 Vezina nominee last year played more than 55 games. Now i do acknowledge that Vasilevsky getting hurt impacts that and 2 years ago all 3 nominees were at 60 games or over, but I do think it helps demonstrate that the idea of a starter or elite goalie needing to play 60 games or more isn't necessarily true. 55-60 is the sweet spot for me personally.

If it were me, i'd start Talbot on Tuesday. Not just because of load management but because I think its important to get both your goalies games early to let them see some pucks and game action. Don't really like the philosophy of sitting Tablot for 3 weeks before you play him again. I don't really have concerns with managing Rittich. I think you can easily manage the schedule for hit the 55 ish games the Flames are likely targeting for him, but that still means almost 30 games for Talbot, which is why I think you want to get him sharp too.

Its hard to put into words how happy this makes me. So thankful the Flames moved on.
  11. This is pretty much going to make it official that Treliving will pass Darryl Sutter for 2nd longest tenured GM in Flames history. Here is hoping he catches Fletcher but I certainly wouldn't hold my breath.... That's stability that the Flames have not enjoyed enough in their history.
  12. Well deserved. Interesting though that last time this dragged on and we were told publicly the Flames no longer negotiated contracts before they expired. Seems they have changed course as Treliving had a year left on his.
  13. There might not be a more overrated player in the league then Brent Burns right now. Until he gets into the o-zone he really does nothing.
  14. I'm honestly excited about how this is going to go down. I find the trade fascinating because i think both fans were quick to defend, but they'll also be just as quick to go "yeah, you were right..."
  15. I’m not a huge fan of the Hamonic trade but using a heavily slanted piece from a local beat writer is not the best way to analyze the trade. Pretty rose colored lenses he has viewing those prospects.

I think that's were i disagree, I don't think the 2 are the same nor is there a pattern. 2 seasons ago was strong play as a backup and a fall off a cliff once he was pressed into starter duty and never really recovered. I had little confidence in Rittich because of how that season played out, he just never looked the same once he had to start. Last season was great, took the starter job, small blip (that could easily be impacted by injury) with a recovery. The pattern isn't really the same. I get people are worried about goaltending and that's to each their own I'm not going to change your mind. But if the worry is due to a "pattern" I don't think its there. Rittich showed a bunch of growth last year IMO which is why I personally am encouraged.

I have not heard anything on Nick Schneider that suggests he chose not to attend. Would guess it's likely has more to do with the Flames wanting to give those 3 more minutes as opposed to a case of him not wanting to be there. 4 goalies for 2 games (not split squads) would be a lot. Would suspect you see him at main camp.

He is on the camp roster, with no reports I've heard that he won't be here, but he chose to train on his own for the summer instead of coming to Calgary. Was at development camp too. So not really a story there.

It is fair to pose the question on Rittich and can he handle a full season as it is something he has to prove. however, if you look closer it's not hard to find reason for optimism. Broken down monthly. Oct .939 2.08 Nov .911 2.30 Dec .915 2.64 Jan .911 2.70 Feb .884 3.02 Mar .902 2.90 Apr .912 2.54 Even looking just game by game it was really just 4 REALLY bad games from Jan-Feb-Mar that really dragged on his stats and one of which was the Tampa game on that road trip where the Flames played arguably their worst hockey of the regular season. He ended the season strong IMO, and I don't think it's fair to say Smith took the job. That was a decision that could have gone either way IMO as down the stretch they were neck and neck. No Save Dave is not fair, especially when it does seem like both the team and player admit there was an injury in there and that would seem to be present in the stats.
  20. This conclusion does not make sense. Neal didn't fit in the top 6 for the reasons you stated Neal didn't fit on the 3rd line because he didn't bring the above AND he also is terrible in his own zone with limited awareness plus the issue of Neal didn't want to be outside the top 6. Lucic is above avg defensively with at least avg awareness and seems motivated despite his role. Your conclusions if far too simplistic.
  21. doesn't sound like we are far off actually. I agree on most of what you said about Lucic's strengths and awareness. My "non skilled" components if 2 fold, 1- his shot is terrible and 2 his speed. Speed for me is not jut getting up and down the ice, it's getting in on the forecheck, it's getting to the right spot in the slot, it's getting to the front of the net in time etc etc. You need speed and agility to get there and based on the Lucic i saw the last few years I just do not have faith he can do this anymore. So i don't view him as a top 6 option. Ferland is a really good skater with a good shot and that's why i don't see the comparison or the potential Lucic can do this.
  22. I get we are just talking about an experiment so it's not like i'm angry or something. I just see no reason to believe this is going to work becuase Lucic has been slow for a while now and "phenomenal" shape or not the likelihood he can reverse that at his age in 1 off-season is very remote. Also just philosophically speaking I hate the idea of putting non skilled players in skilled situation and thinking that is better for the team overall. The thought that we should accept an 85 point Gaudreau is ridiculous to me because you should want to maximize all your players talents, and I don't agree that Lindholm is going to boost others around him as he traditionally has not done that in his career. They are going to try it and it's fine I just don't like the idea at all.
  23. Few tidbits from a recent interview with Peters - Lucic will see some time with Johnny/Mony especially if game get physical (yuck....) - Lucic in phenomenal shape (typical coaches speak) - Lucic at his best when playing with a RH center. Sees him probably playing with Ryan a fair bit but would need to move a LS to RW. Said he could see Mangiapane's speed playing well with Lucic. So sounds like Lucic - Ryan - Mangiapane is how he will start. I like many elements and ideas behind that line.
  24. Cool story here. Stockton signed Johnny Gaudreau's brother to an AHL deal, among 3 others.
