  1. Thats corect. He also has not been selected in the import draft so I don't believe he is actually eligible to play in the CHL. I believe it was Francis that mentioned that he was having issues with the exams so it was looking like he may not be eligible. Looks like the flames may have run out of options and had to sign him and turn him pro. I think he will be in either the ECHL or AHL next year.
  2. Due to his age Zagidulin is only eligible to sign a 1 year ELC contract. Starting at 25 players are no longer eligible for ELC so at age 24 it's a 1 year deal only. so the length is CBA dictated.

The Avs record looks good but I think that is really driven by Grubauer. \Unless it's a bad team, the Avs are routinely and the short end of the stick when it comes to shot/chance generations and the pace of the game. Seem pretty consistent in this way the whole year, just lately the goaltending has been excellent so their record reflects great play that I don't think is really they. They still bleed a lot of chances when they play against good teams. I think Grubaeur's going to need to play at this level in order to give the Avs a chance. Flames matchup great against the Avs and have payed them well all season, so I don't suspect too many issues unless Grubauer continues to put up a.950 save %.

i would start Rittich but I will be shocked if it's him. All signs point to Smith. I really hope it works but count me as pretty skeptical. I don't have much faith in Smith.
  5. I think if the Oilers were smart they would do whatever it takes to get Ron Hextall. Not sure if he has interest but that's the name they should have on the top of their list.
  6. If you can get Mrazak to sign another 1 year deal i would have interest. However, I would share the skepticism about giving him any term because as well as he has looked at times this year, he was that bad last year. I don't think he is a lead the franchise type of guy.

Last 15 starts: Smith 8 against teams that look playoff bound Rittich 10 of 15 against teams that look playoff bound. I'm not sure I agree with the "hot hand" approach. I personally think smith's stats are padded based on who he has played but I also fully expect Smith to be game 1 starter. I just really hope that isn't a mistake.
  8. Personally, i'm going with Fantenburg. I want my team firing on all cylinders and come out of the game swinging. Fantenburg and Ras have been a great paring and i'm taking that over Valamaki who just missed too much time for me to put back into the fire for the playoffs.
  9. Might want to re-think the whole Nicholson should run hockey ops plan the Oilers are working off of...

I know he was on the radar for some but I think we can cross Howard off the list of potential Flame targets
  11. Think the Flames will struggle to get a high profile college free agent. They are deep and young in key spots so they can't offer to burn a year and they really can't offer much of an opportunity in the next year or two. T They were supposed to be on Teves but lost him to Vancouver. i suspect that will be the case for most and maybe they snag a guy later int he process. However, they do have a decent amount of draft picks to sign too that should make the jump next year. You are correct. Emergency call-up is the only exception.

Thanks for positing this Carty. He will be very missed. I really enjoyed my discussions with him as I enjoyed his knowledge and humor. Very sad. RIP

Just my gut feel on this, I thikn they wanted to him to play at one league and get comfortable again. Gillies/Parsons were high on the depth chart so while a promotion may have been in order I kind of feel they probably just wanted to leave well enough alone and let him try and get some confidence back. Could be wrong, but that's how i would see it. This summer will be interesting however. Bit of a log jam and with no one grabbing the AHL job, or really the NHL job, a lot if influx. Wouldn't be surprised to see a move but i'm with you in that I hope they don't give up. Wasn't thrilled with the pick, but didn't hate it either, but he still put on one of the best Under 18 performances i've ever seen so there has always been upside there. Don't bail on that at 22 IMO, just look at Jack Campbell or maybe even Laurent Brossoit.
  14. Didn't know where to put this, but Dillon Dubes AHL season has him in some high end company.
  15. No question, it has followed the script for sure. For me on this I'm always hopefully my city can break the trend and be smarter but that was probably asking too much to begin with.
  16. What you are saying may be factual true, but like I said earlier all this is for me is a fancy way of delivering what is essentially the same message. All of this was on the table 2 years ago so if if was Nenshi as the only road block then(doubt it as he is just a mere 1 vote on council) Council should have found a way around it instead of delaying everything 2 years. But this council is a small step above useless so this really doesn't surprise me at all, it's just disappointing to get dragged through all of this to yield what appears to be heading to the same result everyone could have had years ago.
  17. Putting my own personal/political views aside for a minute. That has not changed. When this whole thing blew up almost 2 years ago a CRL was in play, as was a district so what's changed? Why take such a hard line stance on negotiations and made it look to silly publicly only to come back to the table and give them a better deal you publicly already said was unfair? Like I said i'm willing to wait for the numbers but so far this story is just feeling like a big sell job to me. City is taking an old product, putting it in a fancier box so they can re market it as new and at a new price tag.
  18. The deal is better.. for the Flames apparently.. If that's true I will say this will probably be the biggest civic blunder I will have seen in my time being back in Calgary.
  19. Agreed. Not to mention what was gained by the hard line stance they took with the Flames only to come back a few years later with a bunch more money? So many more steps to this and i'll wait for more information but their process seems off to me. Hopefully there is a fair deal in here and not the city just giving in and giving the Flames a pile of cash.

I doubt it will happen but i'd like to see Peters give Rittich a run of games. Still think he's their best option moving forward but he's got to get a groove again. Hard to do that when you don't play.
  21. Jeff Davison, the head of the committee on the Event Center put out an FAQ on the work the committee has done. Has been presented to council and they are awaiting a mandate to bring their proposal back to CESC. https://www.jeffdavisonyyc.com/blog/eventcentreqanda

Good thing it wasn't a playoff game then.

100%. I'm not pinning the loss on Smith by any means. Just think they Flames are playing pretty good hockey so the criticism is strange to me. Their playing the style of games that win in the playoffs. you would like to see them convert more but I think that will come

A team that won 7 straight and is in the top 5 in all defensive categories isn't playing "that great" ? wow. Tough crowd around here.

I hate sounding like a broken record, but Smith is so clearly not the guy and I do not understand why this organization is having such a tough time seeing that. Im going to be pretty choked if they don't give Rittich another run of games.
