  1. I've lost words to describe this...
  2. I honestly believe, and this is not just because i'm a Flames fan, that the Oilers GM job might be the worst in pro sports. Turning this thing around is going to be incredibly challenging becuaes what exactly do you do? Tank? - Seems easy but draft picks typically take 2-3 years and they would need multiple drafts. Are you prepared to wait 2-3 years? Is Katz? are your fans? I mean he's got a contract but how happy is McDavid going to be losing for another 2-3 years? Be aggressive - sounds easy enough but they are currently projected to have about 14 million in cap space for 13 players and currently don't have a goalie under contract. You cannot build a roster through FA with that limited cap space. Can try trade but what do you have to give? Your farm system is bad, picks only have so much value and even then are you ok giving up picks and not aid a bad farm system? Trade McDavid and or Drasaitl - again, sounds easy in theory but the hardest thing in the NHL to acquire is elite talent and you need elite talent to win. So great trade them but that just means you are not back to square 1 trying to find that talent again. McDavid provides both a blessing and cure for a perspective GM. The pressure and expectation will be to win now but given the state of their franchise that is going to be incredibly difficult to do. It would take some Ninja GMing to turn that place around in short order i think.

Doesn't seem as relevant with Rittich playing so well, but things not looking good with Bobrovsky in Columbus. If anyone is still interested.... Apparently Bob was not happy about getting pulled and he and Torts got into it and he refused to come back to the bench. Sounds like this is essentially a 1 game suspension.

They would probably take Smith if the Flames paid for it I would imagine. I can't imagine the price would be much more than a 3rd-4th round pick plus area but they may want something like a 2nd or a better prospect if Smith is in the deal.

From Friedman. Believes neither Mrzaek or Mcelhinney available yet but potentially will be.

He is wavier eligible. According to CapFriendly the recalled Colin Delia on emergency loan which means if they wanted to see Forsberg they could have done so without exposing him to waivers, which is what I thought perhaps could be the reason they went with Delia. Reading between the lines there but looks like he's down the pecking order to me but perhaps they are trying to move Cam Ward to accommodate (good luck with that) I do think the equipment changes are making the goalies appear worse (ie looking at stats) so that is a factor. I think normally you'd look at someone with a sub .910 save % and suggest they arn't very good but that probably needs to change this year. That being said, I do think we are in a down era of goaltending. Even some of the goalies we consider to be elite or very good at this point are not the same level of good goalies of the past. Just a down era I think.

Which is going to be tough as there are not a lot of those available. I definitely don't think the Flames should be using their first round pick. Guy that might foot the bill is Anton Forsberg. He had some buzz in Columbus for a while and Chicago put him in the Panarin deal but then they signed Ward in the off-season and when Crawford went down it wasn't Forsberg they turned to. If he was in the Panarin deal you would assume they like him but perhaps things have changed. Good AHL numbers and really good numbers in the Swedish league but has been mixed in the NHL.

Getting a small fear that the Flames will rush Rittich back becuase they feel like they don't have another option....

Until you give Rittich more opporutnity I don't see the value in spending big assets to get a "proven" guy. I do however, think you can give up less and pick up a more solid backup option. I think that is what Treliving will focus on, not the big fish.

I would personally give Gilles a try and I think Smith is done and won't recover. I think its both a reflex and a style problem that has just killed his confidence and this happens to someone later in their career. Problem though is Gilles has been really bad in Stockton so while many are going to say "we can't do worse" the answer actually is yes, it is very possible Gillies could be worse than Smith so it's not that simple an equation. They likely already are, but I think the answer probably likes externally. Options are pretty thin though and probably won't get better for a few weeks so I think they are going to have to keep trying to work with Smith or give Gilles a shot.

I would play Smith too. I'm not the doctor but lower body injuries worry me even if they are just tweeks. Smith was ok, not great but ok, last night and could use the extra game and i'd rather not risk further injury to Rittich at this point. I'd even play Gilles in front of Rittich right now. I would not play Rittich tonight.
  13. Really have to admire Chiarelli. Has an incredible ability to make a high volume of moves without actually making his team better.

So just to clarify, If I were Peters my aim would be to start Rittich in approximately 60% of the games remaining would which get him to about 47-48 games played over the course of the season which I also think its a pretty optimal number given his workload in past years. Obviously subject to change given game play etc. So I'm all for treating him like a starter I just don't think it warrants an elite level usage like 70-80% of starts.

I don't really buy into the Kipper got worn out idea. He was routinely excellent in the playoffs and the 2 years he wasn't were the years under Keenan where he wasn't great in the regular season either and even then I still thought he was good in the playoffs. In 08-09 the Flames went into the playoffs with basically no good healthy dmen and still found a way to push Chicago to 6 games. But I also agree with Jtech were are talking about the elite of elite here so i'ts not a good comparison, and for my money Kipper was a Hall of fame level goalie as a Flame. (but he'll never get into the Hall but that's a separate discussion). Depends on the goalie and in the situation. Typically only about 10-12 goalies play 60 or more games so it's not the majority. But here is the bigger reason I think it's something for Rittich specifically: 23 48 32 33 Rittich's GP total the last 4 years. Big jump if that's goes to 55-60.

If he doesn't play it will be two weeks between games before he plays again. Yes he needs to play and Rittich needs a rest too.

My own take on this, without any inside knowledge, is Smith is battling his own confidence and in turn Peters his confidence in Smith but Peters is trying to back up one of his guys so he's doing it privately and not publicly. I think Peters is also hyper sensitive to criticizing a goalie publicly after his experience with Lack, where's he admitted more than once he is embarrassed by. I don't think Smith was ever physically "injured".
  19. Funny thing about the "Hitchcock" bump is nothing he has done has had an impact. They are getting unsustainable goal tending and scoring at a higher rate than previous (higher shooting percentage) Enjoy it will it last Oilier fans because that bubble gonna pop.

Flames are (all at 5 on 5): 5th best in shots against/60 3rd best in Fenwick against/60 2nd best in Corsi Against/60 10th best in Scoring Changes against/60 (2nd best in the league in this category since the Pens game) 22nd in High Danger Scoring Changes against/60 (6th best in the league in this category since the Pens game) They are 15th in Save percentage. What your asking for has already happened and we are seeing those results. Currently the Flames only get average goaltending and still are a top team. I think the better question would be what could this team do if they got better than avg goaltending on a consistent basis.

No love for Curtis Mcelhinney? Joking aside, yes you are right.
