Oh I have no problem with someone looking at stats and trying to find hidden gems, but to suggest the Flames are failing because they aren’t signing every guy with somewhat good stats on eliteprospects shows a lack of understanding. There is only 6 pro spots for goalies with the Flames. Most players aren’t going to leave their home pro leagues to come here to play in the ECHL, so that leaves 4 spots in pro hockey to offer.

Hlavaj put average numbers in one of the weakest pro leagues in Europe. Now he has moved up a level to the Czech league, but even that league is on the lower end and his numbers are pretty average. Sure the Flames could sign him, but where is he going to play? He isn’t good enough to play in the AHL, so the ECHL? May as well let him develop in Europe and sign him when he shows signs of being at least capable of playing in the AHL, his numbers suggest he isn’t there yet. Edit: JJ starts the same conversation every year and every year shows little to no knowledge of the world of hockey, even though the logistics have been explained to him over and over again.
  3. Ottawa is putting Bernard-Docker and Sokolov on waivers tomorrow. Sokolov is interesting, 6’5” RHS winger, 59 points in the AHL last year, 23 years old.
  4. They can add an addendum to the contract.
  5. Good deal all around. Give him the C now and let’s get this season going.
  6. Looks like Pelletier tried stop up/change direction and really didn’t give Studenic many options. Just an unfortunate collision. Hopefully he ok.
  7. This is in regards to Backlund. It also sounds like if/when a deal gets done he will be named the next captain.
  8. I think the thing with Rooney is that he can skate and put him on a line with other players who can skate and you have a more effective energy line. I am fine with the D pairs, it keeps the lefty righty combos. Hanifin and Andersson did well together.
  9. So based on the lines from yesterday it looks like the current lines would look like: Huberdeau-Lindholm-Sharangovich Ruzicka-Kadri-Dube Mangiapane-Backlund-Coleman Pelletier-Rooney-Duehr Hanifin-Andersson Zadorov-Weegar Kylington-Tanev Oesterle Markstrom Vladar
  10. Second group. Looks like they are going to give Ruzicka a shot at top 6 minutes, the talent is there. Oesterle gets Kylington’s spot on the 3rd pair.
  11. I think they are trying spread out the minutes on the back end and also limit Tanev’s minutes to try and keep him in the lineup. This also maintains the L-R. Looks like they might be giving Rooney an opportunity to earn that 4th line center job and making Coronato earn his way onto the roster.
  12. They changed the wording of the original release to say that he won’t be able to participate today.
  13. Based on the groups these lines or pairs loo to start the season together: Huberdeau-Lindholm-Sharangovich - These 3 are on Team Vernon, Pelletier, Coronato , Honzek and Zary are also in that group. Zadorov, Weegar, Hanifin, Andersson - Are all sakting on Team Vernon as well. So i think we could see some combination of those 4, my guess is Hanifin-Andersson, Zadorov-Weegar. Dube, Kadri, Mangiapane, Backlund, Ruzicka, Coleman - Backlund and Coleman are a lock to be on the same line again. Kadri will center the 2nd line. I think Dube, Mangiapane and Ruzicka are probably going to be skating in some form with either Backlind or Kadri. Kylington-Tanev - These two are most likely going to make up the 3rd pair and are skating together on Team Iginla. Gilbert and Oesterle - These two are also on Team Iginla and will be fighting for the 7th defenseman spot in camp. Markstrom and Vladar vs Wolf and Dansk - These are the goalie tandems for Team Vernon and Iginla, so we can guess that these are the tandems for the Flames and Wranglers to start the season at least.
  14. If I am Zadina, I look at Chicago and their lack of skilled forwards outside of Bedard and that’s where I want to go. I would like to see him come to Calgary, but Calgary needs some PR work to be able to get some of these guys to come here right now. I am not sure where his fit here would be either.
  15. Not sure where to put this but Michael Stone has retired and is joining the Flames in a player development role. Consummate pro, maybe he can pass on a few pointers on how to launch bombs from the point.
  16. https://www.nhl.com/flames/news/flames-announcement-development-camp-details/c-345218652 Flames announced their Development Camp yesterday. One thing I noticed was the size of the invites. Only one player was under 6’. I would say there has been a massive shift away from skill first and size after. I think for things like development camp invites you probably aren’t going to uncover top 6 players in undrafted players, but you might find the next Garnet Hathaway.
  17. When you have two Cup rings, you get a ton of chances.
  18. Sam Steel to Dallas. Another guy who would have been a good value pick up.
  19. He won’t sign long term in Toronto. We will get the biggest return from a team that can sign him long term.
  20. Probably takes them out of the running for Hanifin.
  21. Was really hoping we would sign Geekie, but we can’t afford $2m for the 4th line center. I wonder about Brett Howden.
  22. I would go with the younger bounce back options in Foote or Bear.
  23. Korpisalo to Ottawa, great pick up for Ottawa.
  24. I think RHD 3rd pairing guy and a bottom 6 center are probably the needs for Calgary today. If they trade Vladar they will need a veteran 3rd stringer for the AHL.
