I was just making a comment about how the Flames goaltending should hopefully turn out this season... I think that we should be in pretty good shape...

By all rights, the Flames should be in better shape for goaltending than we have seen for quite some time... Talbot has had a few good games (.931 SV% so far), and hopefully that continues... History shows that he has the potential to get the job done... But we also need to remember Rittich has done quite well considering he was in the net a lot of games when the Flames did not give their best effort... Here is some food for thought for those that have doubts about Rittich... Even this season, Rittich had some ugly stats in two games where the Flames were not playing their best hockey, but in 3 of the 5 he had a SV% of .944, .955, & .964 (in that order)...

Agreed... and since Rittich is 27, we could be looking forward to a future of solid goaltending for years to come...

and yet some still question whether Rittich is capable of being a starter...
  5. Whoever thought we would see Neal leading the league for goals... Just can't see it lasting... McDavid and Draisaitl each have 4 and Neal has 8...
  6. Last season Neal had a S% of 5%... So far this season he has a S% of 42.9%, and I'd be willing to bet beer that he won't keep that up, not even close... He will do better than last season, for a couple of reasons... He couldn't possibly play any worse, and he should also have the incentive of embarrassment and not wanting to close out his career being known as a pylon...

    MILAN LUCIC

Seeing the highlights of the game with Neal getting that hat trick tonight just made me despise him even more... and I didn't think that was possible... He coasted most of last season, and now he looks like someone lit a fire under his Hash Rate... We should start a pool to guess how long it is until he regresses back to the lazy slug on skates we were used to seeing during his time with the Flames...

At the end of a win, they'll say "Big Snag Zag has another win in the bag"... I'd bet a beer on it...

Some goalies benefit from a break, and others don't... Fatigue was never a problem for me, but If I had tweaked something, than a short break made sense while it healed... Otherwise it was easier to stay focused by staying busy playing the games... I knew other goalies that felt the same way, and some that would get rattled from pressure, lose focus and then need a break... I think that for a lot of goalies, it's whats going on in their head more than getting tired that leads to problems... That said, of course being in good shape physically is important... Same as for any other position in hockey, or for that matter, any other sport...

I was a goalie, and wanted to play every game... Sometimes towards the end of the season, if we were up by a few goals, the coach would go with the backup for the 3rd period, and it drove me nuts... I was driven to want to always be on the ice, I felt that I had earned it, and more importantly that it gave our team the best chance of winning... Some goalies are different, and for different reasons... For instance, some can only take so much pressure, and then they get rattled, and I knew some of those over the years... and that would also be one of the reasons why some goaltenders are only capable of a backup role...

I agree, it is rare for a goalie to be able to play 60+ games... Kipper was Kipper, and he was a rare breed of goalie... Rittich is Rittich, and no one knows what his ideal workload is yet... 55 - 60 games might be his limit, time will tell... But Rittich might be a workhorse in net by nature, and able to handle a heavier load... It is possible he could need it, and feed off it... He definitely has the potential...

Kiprusoff played 74 games in his Vezina season (05/06)... With the exception of his first, and then final season (knee injury), the least number of games he played was 70, and that was in (11/12)... and for that season his numbers were not much different than his Vezina winning season... There was only a 0.02 difference (less) in SV%, and 0.28 (higher) in GA...
  13. The importance of that stability will be all the more important as the team progresses towards its potential as a true contender over the next couple of seasons...
  14. Hey there Hillcat... I think that any of us that has ever popped in for a look or posted in the OMB probably knows who you are... For those that don't, Hillcat was top cat for the OMB, is not a troll, and he knows his hockey... It will be interesting to see what you think of the Oils acquisitions of Smith and Neal as the season unfolds...
  15. What was your name on the Oils forums?... Also, we tend to be respectful to other teams fans, as long as they do the same towards our team, and the members here... So in the spirit of keeping the peace and that fact that I feel bad that your organization cheaped out and snuffed your boards... I'm not sure if you had a chance to notice before your forums lights went out, but they started a new Oilers Message Board that already has a bunch of your regular posters active... http://the-omb.proboards.com
  16. Neal @ 6'2" & 221 lbs... Brouwer @ 6'2" & 215 lbs... and they both have a few things in common... Neither one could even stick up for themselves let alone anyone else... and they both forgot how to play hockey as soon as they signed the best contract of their careers...
  17. Watching the Oils fanbase turn on Neal if he continues his trend of underachievement should be entertaining...
  18. That's the way I look at it as well TD... Neal had made no amount of significant contribution or had any success fitting in, no matter whether he was on the Flames top line, the 4th, or somewhere in between... Most of the time he looked like he was coasting, and just putting in time to collect his cheque... His face on the bench after he had made a bad hockey play said it all... He looked like he really didn't give a Satoshi... Maybe he gets more points with the Oil, but it doesn't really matter... The Flames are better off with Lucic, who is overpaid, but will contribute more to the team than Neal did... It was a trade of bad contracts, but my bet is that the Flames came out ahead on this one...
  19. I just took a look, and couldn't find it... Maybe it's just a short term issue, but at the moment, it's gone...

I'm still hoping that they replace the guy in Calgary... If they want to be nice and still give him a job, maybe he could be head goaltending scout... In Botswana...

Pretty good chance that it is better than the goalie coaching here...

re: bolded... Problem?... I don't see one... The older way still works... We still see it on some teams, just not nearly as much as we used to... What bothers me is when we see another team doing it to our forwards, and our team doesn't clue in and do the same to theirs...

    MILAN LUCIC

I hear ya JTech... Lucic hasn't been putting up points for the last 2 seasons, but at least he still made some positive contributions to the Oil with his defensive play... If we look at some stats from last season, the Coilers allowed 5.3 fewer shot attempts and .70 fewer goals per 60 minutes (5v5) when Lucic was on the ice... Both stats were among the best on the team... He was 7th in the league with 259 hits for an average of 3.37 a game... As for his Corsi for % last season, he still had had 50.72, making that 12 seasons in a row he's been above 50%... and that is pretty impressive... I'll put a couple of stat charts below to compare Neal and Lucic last season... and that is more of the point here... I am not expecting Lucic to do what he did in Boston, but I do expect that he will make a bigger contribution to the Flames than Neal did... We all know that both Neal and Lucic are on bad contracts, but at least I can think of a few things where I can reasonably expect Lucic to bring some positives to the team, and I really can't come up with much of anything positive to say about Neal for his time with the Flames last season... Lucic had 23 goals and 27 assist in his first season with the Oil in 2016-17, and even though I certainly wouldn't bet he'll get back to that level, maybe if we are lucky he can improve on his point totals for the last couple of seasons enough to make us all feel a lot better about the trade...
