David Shantz and JD Watt were recalled from Utah for last nights game, and promptly made the most of their debut. Also the first game of the year for Pete Vandermeer. Four players were ejected in the first, including Chucko and Carpentier.

The article states that Watt played on the top line with Van der Gulik and Jaffray for the second and third, no mention of who he replaced.

Abbotsford hits the road tonite for a six-game trip, the start of it will be three-games-in-three-days. Six total games in 10 days, this is the first big test of their season. In fact, 16 of 26 are on the road till Christmas. We should see split time for Irving and Shantz this week, since Keetley is out with knee problems, suffered Oct 14 vs. Manitoba.

Can anyone tell me if Riley Armstrong is injured? i have not seen him in the boxscore as of late. Thanks
This from the Abbotsford Times, Friday 10/23.

Watt was recalled from Utah of the ECHL around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday after Riley Armstrong went down with an injury to his lower body, and the rugged forward chipped in with a Gordie Howe hat trick despite any fatigue he may have felt in the win over the Marlies.

Armstrong was seen in the Heat locker-room in a suit and walking on crutches and will be re-evaluated by today, as well as Keetley, said head coach Jim Playfair.

So what have the line combinations been early on in the season?

Who is Backlund playing with and what are the D-pairings?

http://www.bclocalnews.com/fraser_valley/abbynews/sports/heat/

From Heat Central, todays lines for practice were:

Jaffray-Chucko-Stuart

Backlund-Germyn-Sutter

Murray-Lundmark-Van der Gulik

Carpentier-Grantham-Watt

Cunning-Vandermeer

That's all they had.  Click on the link to get more info on players returning from injury, and quotes from Jim Playfair.

Heat go for their 5th win in a row tonight vs Rockford. Leland Irving has been outstanding, he is now 7-3-1, 1 SO, 2.18 GAA and .927 save % on the year. Jamie Lundmark leads the Heat with 12 points (5G, 7A) in 15 games and is tied with 3 others for the team lead in penalty minutes. (44!)

Also (This might have been posted elsewhere) Leland was the AHL player of the week for the period ending 11/1.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. The American Hockey League announced today that Abbotsford Heat goaltender Leland Irving has been named the Reebok/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Nov. 1, 2009. Irving won each of his three starts on the week and stopped 81 of 83 shots for a 0.65 goals-against average and a .976 save percentage.

GO LELAND! GO HEAT!

The Heat just finished their second thre-games-in-three-nights on the road stretch, going 1-2. Irving was less than spectacular, losing the first 4-1, then was pulled after four goals in the third game, and picking up the 6-3 loss. The bright spot here the goalie David Shantz, who got his first shutout of the year, 6-0 over Peoria, and looks like a great free agent signing.

I just watched a couple periods of the last couple of games...

Boy, do the Heat suck. This is especially evident in the defensive zone where they are so prone to getting stuck for entire shifts at a time. The breakout is the worst stuff i've ever seen and constantly either turning the puck over or passing back until even the last man is just passing it hard around the boards to a prayer.

Once in the offensive zone, magic happens but it's just a quick flash and it's gone. They rarely sustain pressure and maintain cycle. They enter the zone, do a quick pass, quick shot, then its out the zone and trapped in their end the rest of the shift.

This team is so slow especially on the blueline. Pelech, Kronvall, and Aulie have cement skates.

Backlund needs better linemates to play with. He's such a passive player it's disappointing. He needs a linemate who is willing to do all the dirty work along the boards to get him the puck. He needs a sniper on his line to finish for him. He has good open ice stick handling and the vision is there but he just seems to be lacking enthusiasm and effort. Plus, while Backlund is good at weaving around and buying time, his linemates just aren't at the same level of offensive mindset as him and can't read him. If the Flames are committed to developing Backlund into a first line player, then they must commit to play him with Jaffray at all times. Stop giving Backlund Sutter, Germyn, Chucko, and others who just don't have what it takes.

  • 3 weeks later...

This is from Heat Central ( http://www.bclocalnews.com/fraser_valley/abbynews/sports/heat/'> ), which is way better than abbotsfordheat.com:

"Abbotsford winger Carsen Germyn sat out both games against Rochester with an upper body injury that O'Rourke termed "day-to-day." He joins David Van der Gulik (ankle), Gord Baldwin (shoulder) and Brett Palin (shoulder) in the infirmary."

This was listed as a note after the 2-1 loss to Rochester.

1-0 Heat.

Brett Sutter from John Armstrong.

1) Armstrong was strong on the puck, fought off a guy and took it right to the net and tried to cross-crease it to Backlund. Backlund was in great position and Armstrong forechecked his a$$ off.

2) Sutter came in perfectly in front of the net. Good rebound goal.

Keetley's in net and rocking my socks off. Hes made two good saves so far.

Make that three great saves.

And I know Peeps said that Backlund was having difficulty finding someone to play with, but Armstrong - Backlund - Sutter are playing excellent.
