Has he been playing right side or left?

When he played with Tkachuk, he was on LW.

When he played with Backlund and Lucic, he was RW.

He seems to be able to play either side well, but I was just talking about playing in the top 6 as the best place.

He was performing like a top 6 player and lead the team in 5v5 scoring (IIRC).

This while splitting time between top line and 3rd line with much more defensive starts.

What makes him so deadly is his quick release.

No probs. Just checking that he's the heir apparent if either JH or Chucky go.

I think he's top 6, but not sure if he has the edges to be top 3.

We should be looking to add regardless.

We don't have much depth scoring.

4th line non-existant, even though Ryan managed a few.

We lost Janko and Bennett, which normally would account for 20-30 goals.

Instead, we had Ritchie, Nordstrom, Simon, Buddy, and Leivo.

I don't mind Leivo, but he's not suited to play with Backlund and Lucic.

Mangiapane with an assist in a losing cause. Canada lost in shootout so won’t make the quarters. Finish behind Kazakhstan and at least one of Germany or Latvia as they play each other later today.

Mackey and the States will be in the playoffs, currently beating Italy. Nesterov and Russia will also be in the quarters. MEP and Norway, Solovyov and Belarus are out.

Guess our focus turns to Mackey and how he handles the pressure of worlds level playoffs.

Nope they finish ahead of Kazakstan I think as they beat them in the head to head.

However anything but a regualtion win for Germany or Lativa sees them out of the quarters.

Well, I am confused, but anyway.  Part of that confusion may have been due to standings not being up to date.

Hope for help from Germany or Latvia, I guess.

Funny how these teams have looked better over time.

Latvia?  Population 1.9m people.

Lativa loses 1-2 in regulation so Canada scrape through in 4th and play Russia

I think the rest are

Switzerland v Germany

USA v Slovaks

Finland v Czechs

Is Russia even that motivated?

Nesterov with two goals including the GWG.

Hmm, where was he all year?

Orlov and Tarasenko here after being eliminated in the playoffs.

Yelesin signed in the KHL, Nestreov probably back there.

Pavel Karnaukhov will probably never come to Canada.

Rushan Rafikov another Flames prospect that will never come here.

well if you could get a decent wage in your home country, not have to worry about learning a new language why would you?

The KHL is a competetive league and probably not everyone wants to leave home.

Competitive for talent, but the money is not so good.

$1.5m the top wage?  Not so good.

The Swedish league on the other hand does not as good in keeping players.

No, but also consider they don't pay escrow and have lower taxes and a ot of those mid range players will likely max more. Not to mention most of them have guaranteed playing time and roles instead of coming over here and having to likely spend time in the A (reduced salary) or be benched.

And that is my problem with the way we bring in players from Russia.

Yelesin had what 4 games?

None this year.

A long serving player in the KHL and we give Nesterov minimum.

He was lucky compared to Yelesin who got $70k.

Not that any of them were great, but we aren't exactly a prime destination for top players or guys drafted.

Would have been cooled if Stetcher signed in Calgary and you could maybe see this more often

I felt he was one of the lesser appreciated players in VAN.

Let him go for what they ended up paying Hamonic.

They will probably end up trading Schmidt due to Hughes and Pettersen new deals.

It's time to play Mangiapane top 6 LW... Even #1 LW.  I'd be in favour of moving both Tkachuk and Gaudreau this off season.

If we keep Gaudreau and Tkachuk, Mangiapane is at worst 2nd line LW.

But your point is well taken.

I would suggest that even if we traded Tkachuk, Mangiapane still should stick to 2LW.

We definitely should not have Mange playing with Backlund and Lucic.

Agreed. 1 for sure but I would be dangling both to get help elsewhere.

The World is just showcasing what some, and most of his underlying numbers, have shown us for the last 2 seasons that while his raw numbers don't blow you away those are mostly due to lack of opportunity. I am full confident that if you elevate his role he would respond, as he doing over there.

We have Dube ready for 2nd line LW/RW despite what Sutter thinks.  So the left side could be Mangiapane and Dube 1/2.  We need help elsewhere like using Tkachuk to bring in Eichel and even Gaudreau to get us Reinhart C/RW (or equivalent).
