DL44
The Washington Redskins just lost their trademark. http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/NFL/2014/06/18/21749026.html Are the Chicago Blackhawks next? What's the difference? Redskins is derogatory... Blackhawks is a name of an indian tribe leader... more of tribute to the region's history then a blatant smack to a whole culture. Black Hawk, born Ma-ka-tai-me-she-kia-kiak, (1767 – October 3, 1838) was a war leader and warrior of the Sauk American Indian tribe in what is now the Midwest of the United States. Also digging a little deeper... "The Blackhawks’ founder was Maj. Frederic McLaughlin, whose family owned Manor House Coffee, a popular brand in the first half of the 20th century. McLaughlin named the team after the Blackhawk division, a unit he helped lead as an officer in the Army. It was formed during World War I, but the war ended before the unit, or McLaughlin, saw action. The unit was named for a Sauk and Fox American Indian leader who fought against the United States government in the War of 1812 and in 1832." The team's immensely popular Blackhawks Indian head logo was created by Irene Castle, wife of McLaughlin, in 1926 at the team’s inception into the NHL." So the Blackhawks comes from a more specific and pure origin then the just plain derogatory 'Redskins'.. Edit: I just realized i ended up on the same article as the linked article up top... shoulda clicked it first...
DL44
Yeah.. The Blackhawks have much smarter with their approach... http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/chi-blackhawks-name-hasnt-been-as-controversial-heres-why-20140618,0,7651702.story "The Blackhawks have said their name and logo are "respectful and proud," and have forged links with the area's American Indian population. They've contributed money to build a recreation center at the American Indian Center of Chicago, invited American Indian veterans to games and added a biography of Black Hawk to the team's website." The_People1
Why are the Portland Winterhawks allowed to use the same logo as the Chicago Blackhawks? Oh, and what about the Cleveland Indians logo?
Crzydrvr
Why are the Portland Winterhawks allowed to use the same logo as the Chicago Blackhawks? Oh, and what about the Cleveland Indians logo? The Winterhawks logo is a lighter shade of colour so it isn't the "exact" same, which means it avoids registered trademarks on a technicality. The Indians are considered to be next on the list of "team names that are considered derogatory".

Make it more PC to depict an actual Indian...

CheersMan
No matter which side you are on in this matter, this is funny. This guy is hilarious... Here is an e-mail sent to Clarence Page of the Chicago Tribune after an article he published concerning a name change for the Washington Redskins. Dear Mr. Page...I always love your articles and I generally agree with them. I would suggest, as in an email I received, they change the name to the "Foreskins" to better represent their community, paying tribute to the dick heads in Congress.I agree with our Native American population. I am highly insulted by the racially charged name of the Washington Redskins. One might argue that to name a professional football team after Native Americans would exalt them as fine warriors, but nay, nay. We must be careful not to offend, and in the spirit of political correctness and courtesy, we must move forward.Let's ditch the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves and the Cleveland Indians. If your shorts are in a wad because of the reference the name Redskins makes to skin color, then we need to get rid of the Cleveland Browns. The Carolina Panthers obviously were named to keep the memory of militant Blacks from the 60's alive. Gone. It's offensive to us white folk. The New York Yankees offend the Southern population. Do you see a team named for the Confederacy? No! There is no room for any reference to that tragic war that cost this country so many young men's lives.I am also offended by the blatant references to the Catholic religion among our sports team names. Totally inappropriate to have the New Orleans Saints, the Los Angeles Angels or the San Diego Padres. Then there are the team names that glorify criminals who raped and pillaged. We are talking about the horrible Oakland Raiders, the Minnesota Vikings, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Pittsburgh Pirates! Now, let us address those teams that clearly send the wrong message to our children. The San Diego Chargers promote irresponsible fighting or even spending habits. Wrong message to our children. The New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants promote obesity, a growing childhood epidemic. Wrong message to our children. The Cincinnati Reds promote downers/barbiturates. Wrong message to our children. The Milwaukee Brewers. Well that goes without saying. Wrong message to our children. So, there you go. We need to support any legislation that comes out to rectify this travesty, because the government will likely become involved with this issue, as they should. Just the kind of thing the do-nothing Congress loves. As a diehard Oregon State fan, my wife and I, with all of this in mind, suggest it might also make some sense to change the name of the OregonState women's athletic teams to something other than "the Beavers." Invin
Finding new things for people to become offended about has pretty much become a sport in itself. We should probably just start naming teams stuff like the Politically Corrects and the Equalities. Anything else would just be too violent or hateful for the fragile general public to handle.
