Yesterday, when Steinberg was comin' at us from the Jack Rebney Winnebago Mobile Studio in sunny Penticton, he was saying that the Flames had been in discussions with Manny Viveiros (calling in on the Atlas Pizza and Sports Bar Guest Hotline) about playing Samuel Honzek up the middle. I wasn't sure where he'd line up for this tournament, but alongside Kerins and Coronato seems like a pretty good place to be.

Edited to include that today I learned that Jack Rebney passed away in May at the age of 93.

I can't repeat here what I yell at the TV.

A lot of seems to refer to Crypto.....

    Blockchain this, blockchain that.

But it wasn't always crypto. At one time, I think it was related to fruit.

I really like having Lindholm with Kadri-Huberdeau.

Do you think so? I didn't see anything from Kadri-Huberdeau last year. You figure putting Naz on the wing, and moving Huberdeau to his natural side will get the best from both?

So are we thinking Andersson as captain?

We all know the options. I've come around that it should be Backlund. He isn't going anywhere.

    ...

I like Weegar for it, personally, but I'm pretty sure that it'll be Andersson, and I will have no qualms with that.

Bigger salary cap. I think he's really sharp to play it this way. He'll also be getting promotional dollars along the way. He's maximizing his value big time. Very savvy on his part. "How am I feeling in 5 years? Not sure". That's cagey and I really respect him for it. Suck it all up and don't get too locked in. The odds against him not being great after 30 are slim imho. He's setting a bar for sure.

    Agreed.

Banning fighting is the right move and I think the NHL should move towards this as well.  You cannot be serious about protecting players from brain injuries when one facet of the game allows two players to punch each other in the head as hard as they can.  Just ban fighting.

Players talk about policing games... If someone runs your goalie then you run theirs back.  If someone slashes your team's star player, then you slash their star player back.  It doesn't always have to be a fight to send a message.

It's interesting that you say that, because fighting is supposedly the deterrent for exactly this.

I'd choose MTL as a player and stay single the whole time.lol Actually no, just thinking about it makes me tired.

I might be implying that french women are a little bit attractive.🤠

Does Isabelle Adjani count? I mean, I get that it's no longer the 70s, and that she's like, french French... but I haven't been able to get her out of my head since I saw The Tenant on the Showcase Revue.

He mentioned therapy and CBD as his huge helps. I have no idea how the league feels about CBD or cannabis in general, hopefully they're not stuck in 1952. They're only performance enhancers at eateries and gas station chip aisles. So I've heard(=

I think he said CBT, which is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

Team captain last year.  Returns to retire as a "Flame".

No reason not to have the longest playing guy as your C.

He knows how to play to stay in the pros.

Last season I was watching the Wranglers practice, and he was first off the ice for some reason that day. We busted his balls about getting off the ice early, and he laughed and pointed out that he's 15 years older than most of these guys... hard days, y'know?!

Anyway, nice guy, and a pretty good captain for the AHL club. Even though Sutter is often considered a cuss word in our house, I don't mind this signing at all.

Should we move along to hockey's Bojack Horseman?

    Alex Galchenyuk maybe?

This week, Crime in Sports will release episode 365... I wonder if Galchenyuk, gets in there before #400. They usually like to let it percolate awhile, but this guy is cementing his place!

Must be nice to cheer for Florida, Islanders, Leafs, Oilers, Detroit, Montreal, Columbus. You know all those clubs that apparently don't celebrate mediocrity and are doing so much better than the Flames.

it's fine to like rebuilds but we have to stop acting like rebuilds are a guaranteed path to success and an easy ticket to a cup. Think it's unfair to suggest that because someone doesn't want to see a team live in the basement that it means they are ok with mediocrity. The chances of a rebuild leading to more mediocrity are stronger than them leading to a cup (especially based on your barometer for success)

I can't believe you celebrate mediocrity.

It's been 34 years since the last Cup win and that's the only number that matters.  Who cares if you've been on 34 dates or went on a cold spell for 9-years.  You still didn't score.  That's the only number that matters.

You are basically saying it's better to lose with some playoff years mixed in rather than lose for 9-years straight but in the end it's all still losing.

I mean, I guess... but the Oilers have had more number one picks than any other team, and they still haven't won anything. They have the best player in the world, and arguably two of the top five. I do think that they have the potential to win a cup in the next few years, but I think that the Flames of two seasons ago had just as good, and maybe even better a shot - and did it without the four-in-six.

I would love to have a Connor McDavid, or Nathan MacKinnon, and it's frustrating that in all the years the Flames have been here, they've never had a player like that (some greats, to be sure, but never that). It doesn't always guarantee a parade, though.

Can't also suggest that we missed out on Granlund or Fowler, since we failed to fail.

We had Kipper, so I doubt that keeping the pick and not making the trade gets us top 10.

Once he walked away, the problems with the team for far more obvious and we started picking top 10.

And if we're going to complain about draft picks - I don't recall there being a whole lot of angst over trading a second to get Miikka Kiprusoff. It was a high second, too, which would seem like a steep price for an unknown goaltender that was largely thought to be a stop-gap. Furthermore, the guy that the Sharks selected with that pick had a damn fine career. I still make that trade every damn day.

I don't either. Our mgmt needs to have a vision. Lately the vision just looks like appeasement and that can't continue. You're only a soft market where nobody wants to play if you believe it and allow it to happen. It's not actually true but we're getting too skittish for my liking. Grab the thing and stop feeling sorry for yourself. Make your own rules and don't bend them.

I tend to agree with this. They are in a terrible spot right now, and it's no wonder nobody wants to sign. The writing seems to be on the wall that this team isn't going to be super competitive. The problem is that nobody has cap space to make much of a splash. I am hopeful that they have their internal deadline on Lindholm.

Look, absolutely love the guy, and love the player. I will be sad to see him go - but he's not the linchpin that makes or breaks the organization. As best I can tell, he's the linchpin that maybe gets them into the playoffs, and a speedy first round exit, or maybe he's the linchpin that gets them picking 14-16. In other words, I foresee another season of mediocrity, and the time to move these guys was around last January. If he doesn't like the deal, it's no hard feelings, Bud.

I don't mind moving Backlund at the deadline, although it's kind of a bummer that he'll get his silver stick early in his tenure with some other organization, but you know, we haven't successfully built a winner. I get it if he wants to chase a cup. Again, no hard feelings, Bud.

I think that if these guys split, others might want out, too, and I'd say, no hard feelings, Bud. Without these fellas, we're still not picking first, but we're probably picking top 10, and since we have Huberdeau for the next 8 years, lets try to be competitive at some point with him on the roster. He's a good player, seems like a decent enough guy, and it'd be great to see him play on a great team that goes deep.

Flames announced last week. In addition to his hire a confirmation that the entire staff is returning.

Brad Pascall has done great work so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt but this is a pretty underwhelming hire based on record and what I've read about his reputation.

Yeah, I'm with you. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, too, but I've been pretty much underwhelmed by all of the changes this summer. I suppose that's for another thread, though.

    Welcome to Calgary, Trent!
