Sadly, I think the Flames will be getting bounced in the first round of the playoffs. Probably in 5, but it won't be an Gentleman's Sweep. Not sure who's going to do it just yet, though.
The worst part is the Oilers just might win the cup.

I listened to most of the game on the radio, and was able to just catch up on the highlights. It definitely sounded like they were mostly outplayed, and that Markstrom stole the win.
Here are a couple of team positives that I think we really missed last season:
- After a bad goal, Markstrom bounced back
- Whenever Winnipeg tied, the Flames answered back very quickly
So, that's a good start!

Kadri is polarizing like E. Kane. Give me Kadri any day over Kane. I don't like the salary, but when the cap goes up, it won't mean as much.
Yeah, I mostly agree. I don't have any contempt for Naz at all. I like the player, but I think that contract really hurt us for what he brings. I think he's being paid fairly, and all that, I just think that it wasn't the correct target. Monahan off the books this year, plus an extra first, I think could have played really well. Instead, we have an aging player for seven years without the team around him to go the distance. This core feels suspiciously like the mushy middle, and I think that there are serious cap implications for the foreseeable future.

Obviously, it's not reasonable to speculate about something that the Flames have kept mum about, but do you think we'll ever see Kylington again? I doubt it's unprecedented, but I can't think of any comparables.

Yeah, I've had the Schmidt Array Ready To Go Boards page opened in my browser for probably the last year or so. I'm going to need a bigger contract... currently there's a yellow 675XDM that I really like, and could make work, but I've mostly been looking at the 750XDM_wx series. Right now, there's a pink one that doesn't really fit my aesthetic, and a red/white/blue one that I think is absolutely horrendous. I like the extra space of the 750, but I think I could make a tight little unit on the 675 that might be more potent.

Crybaby Wah - Blake Coleman
Save any comments about how our players are crybabies because you're missing the point. This pedal is reliable af. As soon as I step on it, I know exactly what I'm going to get. It's durable, it's always there when I need it, and every once in a while, you get White Room, or Voodoo Chile.
Does It Doom Doomcaster - Mackenzie Weegar
This one comes on when you need a push. It makes everything else a little bit louder, and might be just what you need to get over the edge.
Does It Doom Sabbathi - Ghost of Darryl Sutter
It represents an impending sense of doom that hangs over the team. It has left players with shattered dreams, and uncertainty about their futures as hockey players, and maybe even as humans.
Boss Chromatic Tuner - Mikeal Backlund
It's been on the board the longest, and it silently keeps everybody in tune. It's not sexy, but it's necessary. You need one of these, or you probably sound really bad.
Boss Octave - Nazem Kadri
Love the player, love the pedal, but has the potential to bring everything down. Also has the potential to wreak absolute death and destruction if deployed in the right situation.
Strymon Volante - Jonathan Huberdeau
This is my favourite tape delay. There's a TimeLine on this board, and yet, the Volante is the delay that I use more than any other. Jonathan Huberdeau holds the puck just a little bit longer, and when it works, it's magic.
Drybell Vibe Machine - Adam Ružička
This pedal has two functions. It switches between a chorus, and a vibrato. It can absolutely sing, but depending on your settings, it can be there, and then be gone, and then be there, and then be gone, and then be there, and then be gone...
Keeley Fuzz Head - Andrew Mangiapane
This thing is a spark plug. It gets dirty, and it makes everything dirty, too!
Strymon TimeLine - Jacob Markstrom
It's an easy dig at the goalie since he let in the first shot last night after a season where that almost became a meme. I promise not to do it again. Nothing like a delayed reaction.
Strymon Big Sky - Elias Lindholm
There's an echo, and we don't know if it's singing, or if it's a phantom. The only player left from one of the most dynamic lines in Calgary Flames history. We miss Tkachuk, and we miss Gaudreau. There's beauty in these halls, but there's also an ongoing contract negotiation, and whispers of loss. Does he stay, and sign up for a team with an aging core, and years of mediocrity on the horizon, or does he leave, and the best player is gone. It's a haunting sound.
MXR Boost/Line Driver - Rasmus Andersson
This pedal is on all the time. In every situation. It's in the fight.
Keeley Compressor - Matt Coronato/Jacob Pelletier
This is optimistic, but I use the Compressor when I need just a little bit more. During a guitar solo when I need to soar, or during a shimmering clean section, the Compressor makes everything just a little bit better. It's a morale boost, and hopefully these guys can help with some of the pain that this fanbase has been dealing with for the last year and some.
So, in conclusion, we have a pretty good board, but it's not an elite board. The Schmidt Array will help to make it a more cohesive unit, but it'd be nice to upgrade the G2 to a G3, and it needs another shimmery piece. Probably a Strymon Mobius, and maybe an expression pedal.

I don't think you have a choice, m'man. I mean, unless you choose to watch a different team. I can't see another team wanting to take on the rest of the contract, and besides, he has a no-move clause. For better or worse, he's the Flames #1 for the foreseeable future.

Personally, I'm torn between Schwindt and Klapka as they are both waiver exempt.
Schwindt has a slightly better PPG average in the AHL than Klapka (0.49 vs 0.42), but the latter has a huge size advantage.
Assuming Oliver Kylington is not ready to come back yet, do the Flames keep Dennis Gilbert or Ilya Solovyov as the 7th defenseman?
Gilbert is not exempt from waivers but Solovyov is. Both are LH-LD.
Personally, I'd give Solovyov a shot as I feel fairly confident that Gilbert would clear waivers and I'd like to see an injection of youth into the D corps.
It is fortunate that the Flames have 3 veteran defensemen that can and have played both sides (Oesterle-LHS, Weegar-RHS, and Zadorov-LHS).
Today when Steinberg was comin' at us from the Schmidt Array Ready To Go Boards Downtown Basement Studio, he and Gilbertson discussed this at length. The general consensus being that they'd keep Schwindt and Gilbert, but that Klapka, Zary, and Solovyov would be the first call ups.
I have only seen a few games so far, but I haven't been blown away by any of them, and I think that this is a very different conversation if Kylington and Pelletier are available.

I would have no problem with that, and I'm sure that a lot of people on the board would have no problem with that. Still there are two BIG problems with that.
- You need a trade partner
- Jacob has a no-move clause

Jacob does those too. I very specifically recall him doing this twice last season, and while it looks cool, I don't think it's indicative of the correct way to play the position.

I honestly think they'll do well this year though. They're going to probably make the playoffs. I think they get the #7 spot, or the #3 in the div. A good start will cement the #3. Contract years...
Yeah, I'm a bit sad that you feel that way, but I agree with some of this.
First of all, last year was absolutely brutal. It was really hard to watch, and I made the mistake of watching often. This summer has been really tough, too. I've been extremely underwhelmed by almost every move that they've made. I'll go on for a second - suck it, unconditional positivity.
- Darryl Sutter was a horrendous hire, and it's a damn shame that they did it. I get that they had a great season under him, but the eventual outcome was extremely predictable. I hear the people talking about how "the players got what they wanted", and "they let go one of the greatest coaches in NHL history." I call BS. What decisions did Darryl Sutter make last season that indicated that he should have kept his job? Even if what everyone is saying is correct - show me one goddamn decision that Darryl Sutter made last season that made any sense. We can go back further... how was he so badly outcoached by Jay Woodcroft in the series against the Oilers?
- Mikeal Backlund was the right choice for captain two seasons ago. I'm not so sure anymore, but it's one of the long list of decisions that feels really milquetoast.
- Ryan Huska is another decision that feels that way. It feels like an inexpensive, and safe choice. Maybe I'm wrong, but going with a guy that has been behind that bench for that long doesn't seem like cleaning house.
- Picking up Nazem Kadri was, and was always going to be a big mistake. Again, no real issue with the player - but signing an aging player that will likely break down before his contract does seemed like a real knee-jerk decision to placate an ownership that demands that the team is in the playoffs. To add insult to injury, it meant giving away Sean Monahan for nothing (I'm aware of his condition), when his contract would have simply expired (wouldn't an extra 6 million in cap space have been nice this summer?), AND a first?!
- The margin between the Flames and the playoffs last season was very slim. It's not unheard of that an undersized, highly skilled forward can score 10 goals in four months. I wonder if Matthew Phillips could have done that... speculation to be sure, but I always root for the local kid that grew up wearing Flames pajamas.
- Mitch Love: Rising star
- Everyone said that they wanted to leave. Now the rumour is they want to stay. I can't help but think that this isn't going to go very well.
- Marty Necas would haved looked damn fine in a Flames jersey.
- I miss 13 and 19. Last summer hurt so much, and it sucks so much that it came down to those two players.
- I suspect the Flames might make the playoffs, but they will not be particularly competitive. It's hard watching the Oilers, for the second time since I've been paying attention, have the best player (and arguably best two players) in the world.
You can point to a lot of decisions that go back further than that, and in my opinion, it all comes down to the mandate to make the playoffs and be competitive. We all want that - I'm sure that even Murray Edwards wants that - but the way that the Flames have gone about their business for the last couple of years has been extremely questionable. As a fan, it has been very hard to watch, and even harder to be enthusiastic about. Whatever it is that they're selling this year, I'm not buying. I'm sure, dumba55 that I am, I'll probably still watch a ton of games this year, but I sure miss looking forward to a Saturday night Battle of Alberta. I miss the Matthew Tkachuk Friendship Tour, and I miss coming out of my seat when Johnny would dangle. I love Elias Lindholm, but if he's the best player, then I don't see the Flames being much of a threat. I'm a big fan of Jonathan Huberdeau as well, but if he doesn't have someone to dish the puck to, I can't see him doing it all himself.
Every time I watch the Flames play the Oilers, and Connor McDavid picks up the puck with speed in his own end, it gets harder to watch. Whenever they have a powerplay and score at will, it gets harder to watch. When the Leafs are in town, and there's more blue jerseys than red, I am a little bit more disappointed. And when Matthew Tkachuk thanks our former GM on Hockey Night in Canada on his way to the Stanley Cup Final, I have a little bit harder time supporting any of Murray Edwards' endeavours.
Love, with a Full Nodeling sense of apathy, but still here.

I hate to join the media because they're so often wrong, but Bedard is bringing a new element to the game. He's not McDavid, Gretzky or anyone else. He has his own thing.
As much as I dislike Tkachuk, I always liked that he'll bring the puck in towards his skates before releasing it.
Watching Bedard do just that, nobody currently in the league can match him. Nobody. Most guys are like Tkachuk, almost in slow-mo and lose velocity. Bedard is light speed and not losing velocity. Add in accuracy, Bedard is on another planet. Multiple Richard trophies. Goalies have zero chance. A millisecond to change direction and still moving at 70mph. The accuracy means they have no idea if it's coming glove or blocker side.
I hate bandwagons, but damn this kid has his own thing going on, and he doesn't need much space.
All 3 of his hatty goals we were shaking our heads. "What is a goalie even supposed to do"? You literally have about 0.3 seconds to jump towards him, then he'll dish it off and you're Blockchained regardless.
Can't wait to see him in preseason. I currently have zero idea how you're supposed to defend against him. Going to need a D specialist to not worry where the puck is, just stay with Bedard. Any Zetterberg's left in the league?
I'd sacrifice Lindholm from taking any O-risk, "just stay with that guy", personally. Try to frustrate him.
Sure is a good thing that Chicago got him. Remember that time that the Coyotes forfeited their first-round selection for allegedly putting draft eligible prospects through physical tests?

I can't turn off Principe fast enough, and I liked Singh until I started seeing him on the Oilers broadcasts. I want to puke every time I hear him scream "Boush Bomb!"
Maybe that's because the Oilers usually score five to seven PP goals when they play us.
