  1. All well and good, but are they on a development curve that brings them to the NHL any sooner than Gillies or MacDonald? If it a free signing, then sure, add them to the list. Saves a draft pick in 2016 or 2017.
  2. Shrink-wrap is a LW and Poirier is RW. I think Shink and Poirier are on the same line, though. Last night Agostino, Hamilton and Hathaway were the scoring line, with Shink being a -2 with no points. Agostino had 2 assists and the only shootout goal. I think that Agostino is a first callup option for BT right now. Shrink-wrap will have to show what he has next season in camp and on the farm.
  3. Long rebounds or rebounds to the slot. Which is more dangerous. With Hiller it's either block everything backed into your net or catch it with the whirlwind glove. I prefer an active glove. As for the long rebounds, that is where the team has to become more aware of his style. Know where to be.
  4. Not to disagree (since I agree), but some are referring to an asset that is reaching the end of their ELC's. In many cases a team cuts bait on player they don't consider to have a future. Rightly or wrongly. At 22, we have had 3 years of Spoon. If there is not any progression, then a team may decide to move on (Cundari, Roy). Comments by the GM about being Spoon's chance have people believing that it's his last chance. Spoon and Seth Jones were paired on the best D line in the WHL (possibly), but somehow Spoon is the only one that is a bust. He is a better player that developed faster. Spoon doesn't have the offense that Jones does, but he is pretty smart.
  5. That was the 4th game of the mythical Ortio run last year. Flames won in OT on Wideman's no-goal goal (reviewed after stoppage and it was in). He was 4-0-0 after that game with a shutout. He had a 1.23 GAA and .958 SA% during that stretch. This game was followed by Ortio letting in 3 on 8 shots against Anaheim.
  6. If anything, some people may have praised him for coming in on relief against the Sharks. Or the 6-0 SO to Florida. Some may feel he is owed starts more than Ortio, due to being 1/2 on the depth list, and showing up to camp ready. I think I have been pretty hard on Hiller all season. Know you are just making a general statement, but one or two people saying Hiler is good or Ortio is really bad doesn't mean people are fickle. BTW, Ortio starts tonight. Might be his best chance for a win, against a low-scoring team. Don't worry, Johnny will score 3 tonight, so Joni only has to stop the majority of shots.
  7. Bravo Mr. Treliving on understanding the depth at center. Moving Granlund for a winger makes sense in that Granlund didn't see himself moving to the wing as a long term fit. On to bigger things. goalie options getting value for pending UFA's not re-signing Russell moving Wideman finding the right deals at TDL (for pending UFA's or players not on the long term plan) evaluating pending RFA's as much as possible finding a top 3 RW (may not be possible in trade or UFA signings)
  8. He played solid and stopped 7 shots cold. You are right, that is what you want of a backup.
  9. There's as much risk as reward. Hiller gets injured; Poulin comes up. Hiller plays like the crap goalie he is; no interest out there. Hiller plays lights out; isn't traded because he hasn't done that all season. If you start Ortio now, if he is injured you at least have a NHL goalie to fall back on.
  10. You just want the tank to go full on. Which is more important to you - getting a marginal return (if at all) for Hiller or possibly finding your backup for next season, who will lose for nothing in the summer if you don't play him? At worst, Ortio plays as bad as Hiller and you "win" the lotto sweeps. At best, he gets you solid play and you know you have something for next year. I don't think it really matters. We will be playing teams trying to solidify their playoff spots. Neither Hiller nor Ortio is going to "hurt" our drafting.
  11. Gio and Brodie have both made much bigger mistakes. I don't call either of them inconsistent. If anything, they consistently bring you solid play, offset by the occasional flub. The OT goal against Chicago is that type of flub that every defender makes. Engelland's losing the puck to Kessler is more grievous, since he isn't know for being a great puck handler, but I still think Hiller being on his knees is the the reason that was a goal. Ramo wouldn't have been as far in the crease. Miller would have poke checked the puck or double stacked farther out. There were far too many options for Kessler to score. He chose one that he knew was an easy goal.
  12. He's been less than mediocre the entire season. Mediocre is not good for one game and very bad for ten. Brodie and Gio make as many mistakes as Hamilton. Engelland makes mistakes but plays well for most of the game. Nak and Spoon both make mistakes, but play solid otherwise. Defense is not the issue. Coaching players to use the block instead of effectively smothering a player is an issue. Coaching players to make weak clearing attempts instead of a simple lob out of the zone is an issue. But counting on a goalie that is less than 0.900 even strength is even bigger.
  13. I just don't know how playing a goalie that plays 2 bad games in a row is any benefit. 5 GA for two games in a row is no cause to go back to that goalie, unless there was no team in front of him, or the game was back and forth. Saying that, I actually prefer his style over Hiller's.
  14. Fair enough. There wasn't a specific goalie he was mentioning, so I assumed it may be MAF, since I have seen that name being bandied about elsewhere. Regardless, I have stated my position on acquiring him or Miller.
  15. They can keep him. He's had his time to shine. He's not going to take the Pens to the finals ever again. Why would I waste time with an aging goalie like him? $5.75m until 2018/19? No thanks. He's another Ryan Miller.
  16. There was a long stretch where he didn't get a sniff of PP time. He plays no more than 18 minutes a game, possibly breaking 20 whenever we a down a player.
  17. It's time to move on from Hiller. The game has passed him by. There is no benefit to play him. Nada. He's not going to go on a 20 game winning streak. He's not going to be a Flame come July 1st. He doesn't inspire confidence in the other players. He puts the Flames in a hole every game he plays. It's like playing baseball with the kid that drops every ball that comes to him. You want to give him a chance, but he keeps letting the team down.
  18. I don't think there are too many teams that would give a goalie 15 starts in a row without seeing a serious winning streak. Even then, they would give him a night off. Hiller has not played more than a few games all season where he showed himself worth of trust. I don't mind putting Ortio in. It's long since time. If he craps the bed, give him a 2nd to get his crap together. Don't sentence him just for one bad start. Need to see what he can do right now.
  19. I'm not sure I agree about Hiller sorting it out. Since January 13th he has played 12 games, starting all one out of the last 7. As far as I can remember, he has played one good game (@VAN), relieved and won a game (#SJS), and been average or worse the rest. The win against the Panthers was 15 saves. I'm not sure that Ortio can sort it out. When he came in the last two years, he had been playing in the AHL (and playing well). His has not looked good in any games here yet. Not that he has played many. But to start, you have to show some positives. 2 GA on 11 shots is not inspiring. During practice today, Ortio had the starter net, but somehow lost it to Hiller. It must have been pretty glaring considering Hiller's record against his ex team.
  20. Much like Demko, Gillies was suffering with this for the last year or so. Demko had the surgery and has been great ever since. Gillies will likely need a season in the AHL to show he is capable against pros. If he shows as well as he did in the NCAA, you could see him sooner than later. That said, I would love to get a top goalie now. If it has to wait till summer, than so be it. If Gillies was ready early, then we have a trade asset in whoever we get this year as a starter. Or we hold back Gillies while we ride a solid starter. Win-win.
  21. If there is still a possibility of making the playoffs, no matter how small, Bob will start Hiller as much as possible. Won't matter how bad he looked in a previous game. As long as that slim chance exists, don't expect to see Ortio. Yesterday, Ortio was in the starter's net, but Hiller was named the starter. Must be something in Ortio's practicing that Bob doesn't like or he's just messing with him to get him to wake up.
  22. Sub the 1st with something else, and I would be fine. Not sure their needs (it isn't D-men). I don't think they would be worried trading with the Flames. We aren't their biggest concern. They need to make a run, so they might do it for Hudler and a prospect/2nd.
  23. I would look at Ramo as being a capable backup behind a good starter. He could handle about 25 games and give you enough. We would need to get a true #1 in front of him. If we could get Anderson out of Anaheim, I would be happy. I don't know if there are any other starters that I would trust that are available. Pav from WPG is good, but I worry about his consistency. Reimer has never been able to secure the starter position. If he stays with Toronto, he will likely re-sign there as their starter. If we re-sign Ramo, it would have to be backup dollars, when he is still recovering. Less than $2.5m. That would allow us to pay about $4.5 for Andersson. That's assuming you give him that much of a raise as a RFA.
  24. I'm not concerned with Spoon and The Nak against the Ducks. Both play a physical game and play relatively quiet, low event defense. Nak has a bigger tendency to jump up, but doesn't get burned easily. He's not like Russell getting push off or resorting to the "Kesler Dive" to stop a play. The tougher part will be the top line playing better defensively. They have shown they can score against the Ducks, but power vs power, they can't stop Perry or Getzlaf. Johnny is sneaky, Monahan has some grit, but Hudler doesn't have the strength to battle for pucks. They are fine in the O-zone, but really need a bigger player in the D-zone.
  25. I think you hit the nail on the head. I watched Nakladal and was impressed with his mature game. He has a wicked shot. He angles players quite well. He mostly can cover a player with the puck without taking a penalty. Still some work in progress. Hiller is frustrating to watch. He is so deep in net that he can only block the lower part of the net. Johnny Hockey could score about 5 goals a game on him. But you are right that the biggest issue is he isn't making the saves you need. He will freeze the puck when the top line is out there, killing the play. And his rebound control is way off. Last night's game was one where he made two or three easy saves look difficult. We could win games with the top 3 D and the rest filled with Heat players, as long as we had simple plays and a stable goalie.
