  1. "claps slowly and stands up...."
  2. He did well last season in Kipper's absence. This year he has a very small sample size behind guys the organization were trying to get a feel for. He wasn't really given any chances this year to prove himself. Maybe he does better with a proven team with a proven number1 goalie? Well he was given the early chance to show what he has left; it wasn't that great. He had starts with the "improved" team in March and managed to win 2/3. I think there is better out there going forward. Unless, of course, we want to be in the running for "Connor". 3. Having a backup goalie with a .890 SA% and a 2.9 GAA worries me. Not that I think we will be a playoff team, but those numbers don't exactly inspire confidence. Berra is about the same, and we got rid of him. JoeyMac was also sent to the AHL for the majority of the season, and only came back when they had traded Berra.
  4. I say no to most Oiler cast-offs. In the case of Dubie, definitely no. His confidence is shot after playing in front of the Oilers, and I think he may be done. Not high on JoeyMac, but any reasonable backup signed to a one or two-year deal would be ok. We do have Ortio almost ready to challenge for starting or 1a/1b in 2015/16, and possibly Gillies a year or two later (2016/17 or 2017/18).
  5. If Berra had been playing lights out, I could have understood, but the reality was he lost every game and only won in SO or OT. Hartley has gotten away from that type of decision making, and goes with who he thinks gives the best chance to win, or who worked the hardest in practice.
  6. What bothered me about Hartley early in the season was him leaning on JMac and then Berra, while Ramo sat for weeks at a time. If Ramo lost the next start, he would only get one more game to prove he was the go to guy. You are right that he would probably do the same with Ortio. I would prefer we ride Ramo until the end of next season, with a capable backup. Ramo plays hot, he gets a new contract. Otherwise, we bring up Ortio with a decent 30-40 game backup. Gillies gets the starter job in the AHL, and eventually becomes Ortio's backup.
  7. I think you are correct in thinking that Ramo is good for about 50 starts. We need a 1b goalie to get us through the season, and in case there is any more injuries. I thought Berra was going to be that guy, but he never was able to get on a hot streak, nor install any confidence in the team. After all, he only won something like 1 game in regulation. And no, I don't want to see Reimer. I also think it may be too soon for Ortio; he is just staring to ripen. Let him get another 50-60 starts in the AHL next year.
  8. They needed to see what they had in him. Allaire will work with him through the offseason. I still think a 2nd was a great deal for CGY, though.
  9. Just being hopeful really. Ramo does make some better saves than Kipper, but I am not suggesting he is the 2nd coming. He is just making his case for being the starter. He has stole some game recently, though.
  10. Kipper-ish? Kipper-esque? Kippery? Watching him play lately reminds me of the saves Kipper DIDN'T make. He still has some work to do, but I think Ramo has progressed to the point of being the bonafide starter for next year. Nobody told him we should be tanking for a better draft pick, though.
  11. Remember that Gillies is only in his 2nd year, so he may not chose (or Burke may recommend) that he stay in college for another year. We won't know until the Friars are eliminated. If that happens before the end of the NHL season, he could sign and be available for the end of the season (as he can't play in Abby this season). With regards to Ortio vs. Ramo next year, I can't see Ortio taking the job from Ramo as the season progresses. Ramo has developed over the season, and has looked like a starter since returning from injury. Battling with Berra and JoeyMac early in the season did not help get his game adjusted. If Ortio plays well enough, you may see a 70/30 or 60/40 split of games.
  12. Some good points, but.... Ultimately, I assume that Ortio stays up over JMac when Ramo returns. Keep in mind that Ramo is still a ways out, according to Hartley, so even if/when he comes back this season, Ramo won't get the majority of the starts. Jmac can keep the playoffs in reach until the end of the Flames season. Ortio gets his chance in the AHL playoffs, to continue his development and experience a playoff run. Done.
  13. Amazing that we get a 2nd for a goalie many expected not to be re-signed this year. I'm ok with a Ramo (once he's back) MacBackup for the rest of the year, since we aren't going anywhere this year anyway. Just don't re-up MacBackup again.
  14. Last night's game was a win (not in regulation, again), but I don't feel that Berra stole it. The Flames blocked 27 shots and kept the chances low %. This was a typical Berra game; make some decent stops, keep it close, and let in a tying goal in the 3rd. I would rather that he became consistent in a game - either he plays good or bad the whole game. That way we could make a decision on him - sign him or let him go. It still seems like we have to play him to see if he is worth re-signing. Of course Ramo being out plays a part of that.
  15. Berra played well, I thought. At times outstanding. I know Hartley is trying to get Berra a win to boost his confidence, but Ortio is as important to the Flames as Berra, maybe moreso. Give Ortio a game now, since Berra is going to the Olympics anyway.
  16. Ortio has been better in his AHL starts than Berra was. Three games before the Olympic break, so we should get Ortio at least once. Since Berra is starting tonight, it would be good to see Ortio against the Islanders. If he plays that game well, then play him against the Flyers. To be honest, I think that Berra was brought up too quickly.
  17. You are certainly reading a lot into my post. It was all about substandard goaltending. Nowhere did I say we make any trade for a better goalie. That may be Burke's plan, though.
  18. What I was saying was that right now (as of today), an extra 7 wins would be a wild card spot. If you look at the number of losses charged to Berra and consider the number of his wins that came down to shootout, then you are at below average goaltending. With a Rask or a Hillier, we are just a bottom seed playoff team.
  19. Until he wins a game in regulation, he won't get much confidence from his teammates or the fans. His record speaks for itself: 24 games - 7 wins - 14 losses - 2 OTL....Every single win is in extra time or shootout. If we played a goalie with reasonable win/loss record (.500) for those 14 losses, we would actually be in a wild card position. Not that I blame all those losses on the goalie, but it makes it seem like we were closer to being a playoff team than a bottom 3 team.
  20. Ramo sidelined with MCL injury; no timeline yet, not placed on IR yet. Ortio called up. I hope he is not subject to waivers if and when he is sent down; 99% sure he isn't. This should give some idea of what the Flames have in him. I hope he shows well, since he appears to be a better option than Berra. If he does, Berra will not be re-signed IMHO.
  21. What's funny is that is one thing I have not heard him talk about since he came to Calgary. He is vocal enough about everything else, or at least has been. Sure his MO may be to build from the net out, but I think he may view Ramo as anoth Reimer; need to see a full year to know if he has the "stuff". Sure, if a younger proven goalie became available on the cheap, he would be all over it.
  22. Makes no sense to look for a goalie right now. There is not going to be any great deals with teams looking to make or stay in the playoff hunt. Sellers will want too much for anyone decent. We are not close enough to being a contender to waste assets at this point in the rebuild. Burke has said there is no scenario he can see trading away our 1st rounder. As far as the existing Flames goalie talent goes, he has two goalies in the NHL that (at least one of them) are improving. He has a possible future NHL'er in Ortio. If none of those options help in the rebuild, then he looks for goalie to become the starter by next season or the following. Sure he likes to build from the net out, but right now defensive struggles and D-zone faceoffs are still a killer.
  23. How would you know what he is capable of if he gets max 2-3 in a row, or after a win he sits? Or after a win he plays game 2 of a B2B? Last few games: Loss to Preds 4-2 SV% .882 on 34 shots Win over Carolina 2-0 SV% on 23 shots Loss to St.Louis 5-0 SV% .827 on 29 shots Win over Avs 4-3 SV% .880 on 25 shots Loss to TB 2-0 SV% .931 on 29 shots Loss to Pitts 4-3 SV% .826 on 24 shots Loss to Det 3-2 SV% .921 on 38 shots In that stretch, he had exactly one loss greater than a 2 goal margin. Say what you want, Ramo presents the best chance to win this season.
  24. If Hartley is big on getting wins, why does he insist on playing Berra over and over? Why doesn't he just send him down to the AHL and call up Joey as a backup. - Only play Joey once every 5 games. - Leave Berra in the AHL until he can battle through his positioning issues. - Call up Ortio for 5 games and send Joey back down. - If Berra figures out the game, bring him back up; if not, sign him to a one-year prove-it contract. End result - you have played Ramo enough games to improve and to see if he is a keeper. Berra plays as many games in the AHL and learns to win. Ortio still plays similar amounts of games but gets to prove himself at the NHL level. Or at least shows where he needs work.
  25. Personal rant..... Berra has lost each of his last 5 games. Must be a good time to play him. Ramo gets a shutout and is rewarded with the 2nd game of a B2B. He needs to sit after the loss. Ramo was not the reason we lost the last game. Rant off //
