  1. What I mean is that he seems to take responsibility for the losses. He may have had a bad goal, but he was not the reason. He should feel bad about the loss to Ottawa, but not the others.
  2. Have you seen Ortio after the losses? He is getting down on himself. Why do you want to give him the biggest tests before he even wins a game? Sounds like McBackup's treatment from years ago. Curtis M. got his first career win in his 14th start, on the last game of the 2008/09 season. We should post a thread about guessing the starting assignments for the 3 goalies. 1st prize is bragging rights and gets to email BT with their suggestion for a new coach.
  3. Yes, we agree then. Put him in a position to succeed. Don't sit him against the Sabres, then bring him back in to play the Penguins. Sit the guy after a good performance (2 GA), but start the guy who last had a bad one, who has not had many good ones.
  4. I would say they gave Hiller every possible opportunity to get a job for next year. They even tried to get him a tryout somewhere else as a TDL rental. That ship has sailed. Sure, give him a start. But the question comes to mind, why not give the young guy a chance against "one of the worst teams int he NHL". Surely giving him the chance to actually get a win might help his development. Instead, you start him in the 2nd night of a B2B and expect him to carry the mail.
  5. There seems to be a disconnect between BT and BH. There is no reason to play Hiller. He is not going to get more wins, nor does he provide the stability the teams needs to try to win. If there's a disconnect, then it's time for Hartley to move on. We need a coach that understands the latter part of a rebuild.
  6. Hiller in nets tonight. Tank versus tank? Actually unintentional tank (bad coaching decision) vs tank.
  7. Smid retiring is the most likely outcome for him. He is getting to the point where even a small hit takes him out of commission. That doesn't make sense for any player. Wideman will be moved by the end of summer. Toronto is a possible destination. That puts Spoon and Engelland as the 6/7D which is fine. I think that is a decent 7D to go with. Still have new prospects and growing ones in the AHL. Kulak has to pass the likes of Spoon or Jokipakka to be an option to play on the big club. Sometimes you just have to develop all of them and see who rises to the top. Add Hickey and Gilmour into the mix and it could be interesting. Seem to have more LHS in the AHL than the big club.
  8. How is a guy that played exactly 2 games in the NHL any better than Ortio's recent starts against BOS, NYI or LA? He only allowed 2 GA in each of those starts. He may end up being the Oilers backup for the next few years, but may never be a starter.
  9. Deeds, I am just copying another post from FF, but he doesn't believe Hellebuyck would be available: Flyerfan52, on 24 Jan 2016 - 3:54 PM, said:

Even a three year deal is less risky than going for another backup turning starter. Not sure there are many options out there.
  11. It's an option. It's not like a 1st in 2016, though. Matthews and McDavid have been touted for as long as I can remember. Is there that much of an impact player waiting till the 2017 season? Seems to me that recent OS that were submitted by teams haven't hurt that team's ability to trade. It's not like we have made many trades with Anaheim before. Rob Neidermayer, Tim Jackman, Jiggy. It's not my first choice, but infinitely cheaper than trying to make a trade in a cap world. All in all, I doubt that BT would consider it, but you never know.
  12. Said elsewhere, but this is probably the better spot: Send an Offer Sheet to Freddie Andersen. Make it high enough that Anaheim can't match. They have to get guys like Rakkel, Lindholm, Vatanen, Pirri re-signed to new deals. They have to re-sign or replace Perron, McGinn, Horcoff, Santorelli, Chris Stewart, Tokarski, Gernat, etc.
  13. Smid would do well to retire. I think he gave his all to come back last year, and he doesn't have the healthy body anymore. Whether he is an effective NHL player or not, he has to consider his health. He's a new dad and has to consider quality of life. Nakladal is a good candidate to re-sign. He is better for the bottom pair than Wideman, and there are better cheaper options like Spoon, Joki and Nak. I hope they sign him to a 2-year, 1-way deal. Wideman will have more interest this summer, whether they retain salary or not. Teams that missed out on TDL deals will like to add. Would they be willing to pay $5m for Hamhuis or Russell? Or take a 1-year deal on a known quantity like Wideman. You know what you get, and you aren't stuck with a long-term UFA deal.
  14. To be fair (at least on this B2B), Hiller got the easier start on the first night, with the team actually able to score more than a goal. There was nothing about Hiller's game that was inspiring.
  15. I think that is what I was saying. We used one. If Ortio gets sent down, then it requires one to bring him back up, unless an injury occurs.
  16. This is starting to get confusing again. Supposedly, if Backstrom is healthy enough to play and joins the team, they have to send down Ortio, and use of of their remaining 3 callups. That means we get exactly 2 more players that can come up, injury or not. The only thing is to hold off calling up anybody, and only use an emergency callup if somebody is injured. Still can bring up 2 more, but the first guy up gets sent back as soon as the injury is over. Like I said, it gets confusing.
  17. I believe that Dart is right here. They have used two recalls (Hathaway and Ortio) same day as TDL.
  18. He won't get much rope. At most he'll get 5 games, and those will like come from Hiller's starts. Ortio will still likely get 9 or more. BT has his grand play. If he wants Ortio to be a UFA or RFA, he knows what needs to be done.
  19. A little quip from Hartley (just to fuel the flames): Roger MillionsVerified account ‏@RogMillions 59m59 minutes agoBoston, MA Hartley on Backstrom. "Maybe we have a 38 year old wonder sitting in weeds". Ortio plays tonight in Boston . #Flames 1 retweet6 likes Reply Retweet 1 Like 6 More
  20. Burke said they never entertained a trade discussion about Wideman, meaning they had no intention of trading him while suspended. I didn't hear that one was missed other than an Eklund rumour. As much as I would like to have believed it, it didn't make any sense.
  21. Two different conversations. I suggested waiving Hiller to get him out of here. I think I have been consistent in that message for some time. In case you didn't get what I was saying, I think you are and have been obsessed with Ortio. Count up the number of posts where you complained about him being a healthy scratch, being sent to Stockton, his great games in Stockton, how his development was ruined, etc. I am concerned with finding the right goalie. Not an inconsistent one, not one that plays well later in the season, but a true starter. If Ortio can prove he belongs here as a backup for next year starting out, great. Still need a starter.
  22. No, I said that I am concerned with finding the right goalie. I was talking about next year. I never mentioned that I considered Backs an option. But you are obsessed with Ortio. If they play him for 10 games in a row and he loses every one, what does that prove. Nothing. I only want him to play over Hiller because I can't stand watching Hiller lose games for us. As I said earlier, BT will ensure that BH gives Ortio enough games to remain a RFA.
  23. Even if he was fully rehabbed by the end of March (very aggressive schedule for surgery rehab on a hip), why would they put him into intense end-of-season play? That makes no sense. You don't risk a player's development for a handful of games. I think the problem here is you are more concerned with Ortio than anything else. You would prefer that we play him no matter what he shows, re-sign him and give him a roster spot. I am more concerned with finding the right goalie. May not be Ortio. Oh well.
  24. I don't get what you are saying. Are you thinking we traded for him so that we can sign 3 goalies for next season? Consider the possibility that the Heat somehow manage to make the playoffs or are really close. Ortio could go back there and help them get in. The Heat play most of their final weeks against teams they need to beat. Ortio has already been assigned long enough to allow him to play in the playoffs. Between now and then there are quite a few games. Backstrom might get a few in; BT alluded to that, not the newest goalie to get a run of games. If BT is worried BH will play Hiller and Backstrom only, he will step in. I think most of us agree that we didn't need to see Hiller play, but whatever. Play Hiller we lose. Play Ortio we lose. Give Ortio a few more starts and see if he can pull it together. BT will probably demand that he play at least enough to remain and RFA, so you needn't worry.
  25. What's wrong with a 6th? Palat - 206th Stone - 178th Datsyuk Zetterberg Shaw (5th) Little Joe You can always trade 2x6th rounders for a better pick. You can add a 6th to an earlier pick to move up a few spots. The plus here is we traded a guy that wasn't coming back for something and give a farm hand an opportunity to show his stuff. Considering how well Hathaway played in his debut, I would say that is a win.
