I would go with Enroth and Raanta. Low cost and unknown on average teams. So if one breaks out, it's a win. If both break out, we can move one for pieces. If neither work out, we play the goaltender shuffle for the season and aren't out too much money. #3 on my radar is Bernier. I think he has a lesser chance and even if he does make it, it'll take a while to get the confidence back (Dubnyk).

Weird game tonight. The goaltending monster might be getting a revival if Hiller's out for a while.

Play Ortio against the Caps. Worst that can happen, we lose again. Something has GOT to give and soon. A new tender just might do it.

If he was the backup tonight, he could've gone in after goal #4 but it was Ramo....

Then put Ortio in for those games eh? Hiller. He's been in the NHL longer and in a starter position for the Ducks.

Hiller/Ortio for sure. I like Hiller's more stable game. If we try Ortio and the experiment fails, we have a stable guy to go to. Ramo also has an easier contract to trade.

I'd like to see Hiller and Ortio get the nod. I know people argue that we'll lose Ramo for nothing to the KHL but I think what we get to retain makes up for it. There's no worry about whether Ortio would clear waivers (so we don't lose a prospect by not keeping Ramo) and we will retain two goalies with two different styles. That's the biggest thing for me. Hiller is more positional, Ortio and Ramo more athletic. I'd want two styles over one and I don't want to chance Ortio not clearing so to me, Ramo is the most logical choice to release. I'm kinda surprised we even signed him given our GK situation. Just my one cent (because I lack enough hockey knowledge to give two cents).

I think what needs to be remembered is the style of goaltending. Hiller is more positional, Ramo is very aggressive. What style does Ortio have? It would make more sense to have one of each type and not two of one type. So that factors into which tender to retain.

I agree with kehatch on this one JJ.

And this guy is not signed with any teams already because...? But then our D depth would take another hit. Wideman-Brodie for top then well mostly crap for 3-7. Sides, only booms would block a lot of shots then. Gillies wanted another year in college, you cannot blame Flames management for that. College prospects are a bit different from CHL or foreign ones.

The only other thing I could think of is to sign a FA goaltender (like Bryz was signed etc.). If that's the case... you think we could persuade Kipper to come help us? I mean, it'd just be 4 games, he can't be that out of shape with only a year off, we know him, and he'd be the backup. Wouldn't that be fun to have Kipper back?

Now who gets it? So hard to choose lately.

This is great because I typed this up before reading any of this, but it's still relevant. [i'm in the GK thread when I clicked on the playoff thread. That would be why. Stupid, slow, temporary replacement computer!] Two things I find amusing. 1. We have more ROW than Chicago and Anaheim. They both have won 7 shootouts. Hm. (Also, Winnipeg has only won 24 ROW, one less than Dallas). 2. We have a better goal differential than Anaheim (and everyone in the West not named Chicago, St. Louis, or Nashville). We have two less goals than Anaheim, so they’ve let more goals in. Kinda funny since they were supposed to be really good and set in net, hence the expulsion of Hiller. Now perhaps this is skewed from some funny Bryziness, but still, I don’t know that our tenders are doing that terrible.
  14. Nurse for a first? Heck yeah! Think we can fleece EDM? They want 1st rounders right? That'd be a #5OA pick for #12+OA. Also don't want Kessel. For cheaper or less time, maybe. Cost to acquire and contract just outweigh the positives imo. I'd be ok with trading Baertschi (not cause I dislike him mind).

As a goaltender, your job is to protect the net. If it hits the post, then it didn't go in and you did your job. Generally you like to play your posts to prevent odd bounces, but so long as you covered every part that could lead to a goal, you did what you had to. I think all the Van posts were to the outer side so no weird bounces.

Steinberg thinks it will be Hiller because he can't have a second bad night and will bounce back. He also thinks that Hiller gives us a better chance to win and Ortio might be tired from travel. I don't know how much of that I agree with, but those are his thoughts.
  17. If he can make the Kessel Run in under 12 parsecs, I'd take him.

That looked like a soccer GK type save. I know because I've done the same thing several times. You rush out to the top of the box and slide with the body into the opposing player. It's just (1) there's usually no defender around and (2) you don't usually get hurt doing it. The save would've worked well except Diaz was there too and wasn't expecting an NHL tender to come that far out. Harder to stop and get out of the way on ice than on grass.
  19. This is why I'm on the fence about Wideman. He is contributing (at least for now). Yes, his weakness is that he is slower (I watched several games where he gets beat and can't catch the forward). Maybe it just seems that way since Gio, Bro, and Russell can all motor. Anyway, he has 5 goals and is helping contribute to our offense which is where we are lacking. If we could get a young defenseman who could make up for some of his offense and still play about equal defense then I'd be all for it. The problem is young D take some time to pan out so we could get the bad end of the deal. Either way, I don't think BT will trade him unless he slumps or the team gets well out of the playoff race. I'm not fool enough to say we are going to be in the hunt late in the season, but I wouldn't be too surprised either if our GK's keep playing lights out.
