  1. Calgary Flames Prospect Awards raise expectations for next season http://www.hockeysfuture.com/articles/137055/calgary-flames-prospect-awards-raise-expectations-next-season/
  2. "We are a nation of hockey incompetents this year, in mostly different ways. Montreal lost the best goaltender in the world. Calgary got the worst goaltending in the world. Winnipeg got the third-worst goaltending in the world. Get a goalie, kids. They come in handy." http://www.thestar.com/sports/hockey/2016/04/02/we-all-know-edmontons-going-to-win-nhl-draft-lottery-again-right-arthur.html
  3. Are there any goalies out there that you would like to see the Flames sign or trade for? I'm just wondering what you perceive Calgary's goal tending will look like for the next few seasons. Personally, I haven't a clue, goalies are voodoo to me.
  4. I wasn't suggesting anyone in particular, just pointing out that the # 1 OA could make some players available to trade. A Top 4 D is way down my list. Personally, I'd rather keep all of them if we could,.
  5. I'm guessing that BT will not trade for a goalie until this summer. He will want to see where the Flames pick in the draft and who is available on July 1. If the Flames are fortunate enough to win the lottery and pick Matthews, I would suggest that both Bennett & Backlund would be available in trades for the right return. I'm not suggesting trading Bennett for Bishop, IMO that would be an over payment by Calgary. Bishop is 29, and his $5.95M contract expires at the end of next season. He has been a NHL starter for 3 seasons averaging 2.20 GA and .922 SV%.
  6. I don't feel that any of us can deal in absolutes. There's just too many Cap variables that are up in the air right now. How large of raises do Colborne, Gaudreau, & Monahan receive? Can BT move any of the 5 or 6 "unfavorable" contracts? That said, I can see the Flames being able to afford at least $4.5M for a starting goalie, maybe as much as $6.5M if several things fall into place. I feel that Orito can be re-signed on the cheap for less than $1M. His required QO is only $660k.
  7. 100% agree on the bolded text. The last thing that I want to see next season, is two goalies with less than 100 NHL games between them, attempting to become Calgary's #1. The Flames need a true starter for at least a couple of years, until the team's prospects in goal prove themselves at the AHL level. Whether or not they can fit one under the Cap next season is another matter altogether.
  8. I'm personally not in favour of replacing Hartley at this time; but I am curious as to who everyone thinks would be a good fit for the Flames next Head Coach. I don't follow coaching contracts so I'm not sure who is/may be available.
  9. "There is a lot of mention about protecting only 3 D but can I ask if it is a given the expansion team has to take a defenseman from each team or how does this work ?" I don't think so, as every team can only lose one player to each expansion team. "I think the logical steps would be to solve the goaltending and RW through the draft and/or trade, then see what is happening with Hamonic. Also as mentioned there would have to be a lot of salary cleared for the team to afford him." Agreed.
  10. Another Top 4 D is 3rd on my wish list (we can only protect 3 at expansion anyways). A starting goaltender is priority #1, a Top 6 winger would be next. I'm only seeing enough Cap Space for that goalie next season, the rest will have to wait a year. With 5 veteran contracts expiring, there will be around $16M available in 2017/2018 with only Bennett, Ferland, Gillies, & Yokipakka needing new contracts.
  11. Orito is eligible for a mandatory 110% of his current salary of $600k. So, his QO must be at least $660k, one way, one year term. Based on what I've seen so far, that is what he is worth right now.
  12. This chart is missing Raymond's $3.15M. Even buried in the AHL, his Cap Hit is $2.2M.
  13. Backstrom may surprise us all, though the chances are probably slim. If not, he's just another UFA like Hiller that won't be re-signed by Calgary. If he does show well, he could be a low cost option for a season or two..
  14. Agreed. We will likely be in Cap Hell for one season.
  15. I'm all for playing Orito for most of the remaining games this season. Insert Backstrom and Hiller for a few games when he needs a rest. I'm not sold on Joni at all, but the Flames have to find out how good/bad he can be when playing regularly in the NHL.
  16. That's part of my point. Nilsson was playing quite well until Talbot received his new contract. Then his play started to drop off.
  17. Nilsson appears to be similar to Howard, in that he plays at his best, when he feels he is the undisputed # 1. If there is any stiff competition, both their games appear to suffer.
  18. Agreed. I don't envy BT as he looks for a goalie. The pickings for a starting goalie seem slim in the free agent market, the best ones are RFAs that will surely be re-signed by their teams.
  19. Chad Johnson is 29 years old and has only played 91 games in the NHL over 6 seasons. He is currently finishing his 5th contract (salary of $1.6M) and will be a UFA. His last 3 seasons: 2013/2014 - Boston - 27 GP, 2.10 GAA, .925 SV% 2014/2015 - NY Islanders - 19 GP, 3.08 GAA, .885 SV% 2015/2016 - Buffalo - 35 GP, 2.42 GAA, .918 SV% He looks like a NHL backup who has had one good, one bad, & one decent season. Maybe he can play 50 + games/season and maintain decent numbers, but it would definitely be a gamble. Calgary may be taking a chance on Orito as their NHL backup next season. Do the Flames want to be gambling on both their goalies next year?
  20. It should not be that difficult for Pro athletes. Even if you're not in the running for the play-offs, your still have your job and career to play for. Finding motivation should not be an insurmountable obstacle. Back to defense. Giordano & Brodie are golden. RD Hamilton is one the Top 35 scorers among NHL defense-men. Jokipakka, & Wotherspoon are both playing decently on the left side. Engelland and Nakladal are doing the same on the right. LD Smid is injured. Where does RD Dennis Wideman play when his suspension/appeal is up at the end of this week? Not counting Smid, that's 8 D on the roster. I guess that you could send Nakladal down to Stockton; but I was hoping to see more of him, as he will be a UFA at the end of this season.
  21. Agreed, a small sample size. If he is our backup next season at $660k, we can probably afford up to $4M for a starter.
  22. The required Qualifying Offer for Orito is only $660k.
  23. 19 games to go, no play-offs this season. The Flames need to play Orito for at least 8 more to keep his status as a RFA, and decide if he is worth signing as a backup Let's say Backstrom gets a couple as "promised" in the trade. That leave 9 games that are up in the air for anyone to play. All I can suggest is that everyone try to relax, I have faith that the goal tending will be sorted out in the summer.
  24. It's definitely true that Burke was instrumental in bringing in the CBA clause in the first place. http://thehockeywriters.com/nhl-retained-salary-trades/ I cannot find the quote by Trevling stating he does not like them, nor any quote that says that he does. So, for now, I'll have to withdraw my 2nd statement.
  25. I can only recall the Flames ever using one buyout, a compliance B/O on Shane O'Brien. Maybe they just don't like using them, similar to their stance on not retaining salary in trades.
