  1. I think that Backstrom's career is pretty much done. That said, I think he'll get a couple of games with the Flames. Who knows, he might surprise us all, and get back to his 2012/2013 level of play (2.43GAA, .909 S%).
  2. I'd rather the Flames fix the goal-tending situation and find a Top 6 RW, before worrying about a #4 D. There is probably only enough Cap Space to fix one of those issues next season, and IMO goal is the biggest hole. 2017/2018 will open the Cap Space required to fill the other two.
  3. I say finish this season with Orito and Hiller. Hiller walks at season's end ($4.5M to help pay for Johnny & Sean). Orito gets a QO if he shows something consistently positive in the remaining 20 games. Summer is when I expect BT to sign or trade for one or more NHL goalies.
  4. The Qualifying Offer for Orito must be at least $660,000.
  5. The biggest change that I see in Wotherspoon in he is not playing as tentatively. His decision making is quicker.
  6. My thoughts are that Gillies needs a full season in Stockton as the # 1, before taking on the Flames backup position. He's essentially lost a whole season to injury, we need to be patient. Signing a NHL #1 for a 2 or 3 year term would be beneficial.
  7. I'm not willing to part with our 1st round pick this draft, unless we're robbing someone.
  8. Nakladal & Wotherspoon will both occasionally get beat to the outside as they adjust to the speed of the NHL. But, they do add a greater physical presence along the boards and in front of our goal. I think they each had two solid hits last game.
  9. Most fans have their own idea of what constitutes a rebuild and when one is over. Personally, when I heard "5 year rebuild", I envisioned 5 years with no play-off hockey at all. There would be pain and lots of losses on the scoreboard. The team would move the high priced vets, get some high draft picks, and temporarily fill holes with FAs until the prospect cupboard was full again, and the new core given time to mature. I still feel the same way, as it's only year 3. 2018/2019 is when I expect the Flames to be able to win a few play-off rounds and hopefully become a perennial contender. Nothing against anyone who feels differently, I know that patience is a very hard thing to have.
  10. Normal healing time is 6 - 8 weeks. No solid food for the first week or two.
  11. Yikes! Injuries abound in Stockton. Johnson, Kylington, & Smith out day to day with upper body injuries. Arnold is out week to week with a lower body injury. Now, Grant is out indefinitely with a fractured jaw sustained in practice.
  12. As I understand the proposal, the City would own the land and any facilities built on it. The Calgary Flames group would just be a co-tenant in those facilities, especially the Multisport Fieldhouse Stadium. The Stampeders only play 9 regular season games + practices (not sure how many). Soccer, Track & Field, Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton, Court Sports, Exercise, Training, and Sports Medicine will be using it the majority of the time. Aside from the Flames, Hitmen, and Roughnecks, the Arena Event Centre will also attract more and larger concerts/events/conventions than the Saddledome currently can. I haven't heard exactly who would be receiving the various revenues from the events (parking, ticket sales, food/drink, souvenirs, etc.). I also don't know how much the Flames group would be paying to lease the facilities each year. Those would obviously be large factors in determining who invests how much in the project. The best case funding scenario would be to get another Winter Olympic Games, as the Provincial and Federal governments would kick in for sure.
  13. Agreed, no small task. ALL funding will have to come from the City & the Province. The creosote plant, which operated by the laws in place at that time, closed in 1962 and Domtar has been out of business in Alberta for many years. There remains a small chance at recouping some money through a lawsuit, but that would take many years, and is not a good reason to delay the cleanup. Contaminant testing has been ongoing for years and there are currently 30 monitoring wells in Hillhurst. http://aep.alberta.ca/lands-forests/land-industrial/canada-creosote-site-testing.aspx So, it's well past time to form a plan, get some estimates, and clean this dump up.
  14. I prefer to view this project as a series of developments that should be paid for the groups who benefit from it. 1. They are already detecting some creosote that has migrated under the Bow River into Hillhurst basements north of Memorial Drive. Sooner or later, the City of Calgary must deal with this issue. whether a new facility is built on that property or not. The cleanup will be paid for by the City, hopefully with assistance from the Province of Alberta. 2. Nenshi is pushing for another Winter Olympics in Calgary. I foresee a project where the City, Provincial & Federal governments collectively kick in 75% of the hockey arena costs, similar to the original Saddledome deal. 3. The Multisport Fieldhouse Stadium should be 3-way split between the team, the City & the Province as the Stampeders will only be using it for 8 - 11 games/yr plus practices.
  15. From what I've read, Domtar is free and clear from all costs of any cleanup. They followed the rules/laws in place at the time they owned that property. It's all on the City of Calgary, as they currently own the land, though they may be able to convince the province to pay for a portion.
  16. Wasn't Hiller sick with the flu his last start? Just not as sick as Ramo was?
  17. Nenshi has stated that he would like to see the Winter Olympics back in Calgary. This could be part of a ploy for federal funding.
  18. I've never been much of a fan of Orito, I just don't see a NHL career for him. Gillies is the goal-tending prospect that I'm most hopeful for. That said, it's very difficult to predict that position, as goalies usually mature so much later than defense or forwards. Many goal-tenders don't come into their own until they are 27 or 28.
  19. According to General Fanager: http://www.generalfanager.com/teams/calgary-flames Bollig, Engelland, Raymond, Smid, & Wideman's contracts all expire at the end of next season. Raymond has a NTC and Wideman has a NMC. That will clear just over $16M in Cap Space, assuming that none of them are traded at a prior date.
  20. I think both Hiller & Ramo will be gone at the end of this season, and Orito will be backing up a UFA or traded for goalie next year. But if one survives, it may be Ramo, based solely on his play vs Hiller's so far.
  21. IMO, the Flames will have to trade for or sign a UFA goaltender, who can take the #1 spot for at least 2 seasons. They need one that can play slightly above average consistently for 55 - 60 games, plus a reasonably priced backup (max $6M for the pair). I personally don't expect that Hiller, Orito, & Ramo will be any better than backups, now or in the future. Only Orito could be signed to a value contract.
  22. High marks to Ramo for last night's performance. He smothered most shots, didn't give up many bad rebounds.
  23. What's sad to me is that Ramo is currently the best of a bad bunch on the Flames. IMO, Hiller (injured) is/was the closest to being an actual #1 NHL goalie, but he's not played like one for the Flames. I have little faith in Orito's style of play and especially his durability (he has a long history of injuries). He didn't play more than 9 professional games in a season until 2012/2013, when he played on 4 teams in 4 leagues (SM Iiiga, ECHL, AHL, & NHL). Only 146 games over 7 seasons, he's just not experienced enough to play regularly in the NHL. If not for the 5 games when he played well in the NHL last season (the 6th he got bombed), he probably would have started this season in Stockton. Those same 5 games have made it risky to attempt passing him through waivers. I think the Flames will be fortunate if he manages to top out as a NHL back-up. That said, he's only 24, so there's still a few years yet to see what he can become.
  24. That's true. Among the top 65 NHL goalies, Ramo's current stats are: Wins - 2 = 47th GA - 21 = 47th GAA - 3.80 = 61st SV% - .885 = 61st
