  1. Nice 180 you did there. Welcome back from the dark side. If Smith can't do it then we have Ritter for clean up. The job will get done regardless.
  2. That’s a pretty big number .....mine is slightly larger. Red Mile is now awesome but Electric Ave, now that was where the real party was. I want to party again but this time on the Red Mile.
  3. I’m excited too! Not sure what all this worrying is about. You ask why not us? The only reason I can think of is TB, and there is no guarantee they come out of their conference.😀 16 wins, one at a time, that’s all it’s going to take. 10 days to prepare with 3 practice games in between. We are in excellent shape, with the easiest first round.
  4. IT WOULDN'T MATTER IF YOU MADE IT ALL BLOCK LETTERS AND BOLDED IT. SOME POSTERS DON'T WANT TO SEE IT, THEY HAVE A DIFFERENT BELIEF AND AGENDA. THE OTHER POSITIVE TO SMITTY'S GAME IS HOW HE NULIFIES THE OPOSITIONS DUMP-INS AND FORECHECK WHILE SENDING US IN MOTION ON THE OFFENSE, OH AND HE STOPS PUCKS TOO. Still 4 games left to decide, but I think Smitty has the edge for playoff starter.
  5. It's an extremely risky move but Bob is drawing a line in the sand. He is saying that a forward player must score at least one goal in a calendar year to qualify for one of those fat Oiler extensions. There is still time for Tobi.
  6. Bob introduced the world to Toby Rieder yesterday, never heard of the player till now. Sounds like the kid was unaware of his huge responsibility, which was to carry the Oil into the playoffs. The finger pointing will go on for months as the train wreak comes to rest. Still waiting for the results of the water test results to come in. That should clarify a few things. Bob should focus his attention on the important things like coordinating tours through the shiny new building.
  7. Gotta like the way the minutes are getting spread out amongst the dmen. No liabilities out there and no one getting worn out as we approach the playoffs.
  8. I didn't mind the trade at the time. Brossoit was at the bottom of the depth chart behind Ortio, Gillies and Berra. Smid was a 26 yr old former 1st round pic (9th OA) and was a solid defensive dman. Unfortunately Smid (and his injuries) did not live up to his end of the bargain. I would do that trade every time.

Dang! Such terrible news. Thank you Pyro and Carty for sharing. I had also been wondering why the sudden disappearance of FF52. I always had time to read FF52's posts, sometimes corresponding with him as I felt he had great wisdom and insight on the game, as well as other things. Such a huge loss. Never met the man but I feel like I lost a best friend. RIP Larry.
  10. It's been a bit of an unexpected roller coast ride thus far, I think we would all welcome smooth track here on in, but with a quarter season to go chances are we see a few bumps yet. It's been a combined tandem effort. One falters, the other picks up the slack, and like Conundrum mentioned, they seemingly get along and support one another.
  11. BP is fortunate, he has managed his goaltenders to date in a way that he can now turn to either one at any time. He is not going to burn a goalie out heading down the stretch. I see the work load getting split 60-40. Smith likely gets the 60 but I think that could change any time. I don't see a concern, that left with the TDL. What I see now is a bandwagon, time to get on and enjoy the ride.
  12. Lets compare apples to apples then. I'm not giving up on Smitty, and I don't think he has given up on himself or the Flames. Last kick at the can so to speak with plenty of motivation. I think he will scratch an claw his way back with every opportunity given.
  13. Most would agree that Smith should stay more in the pocket (blue paint) while making tape to tape passes. Not sure I agree with your football analogy of a one dimensional QB is better than a two dimensional one. Michael Vick demonstrated the later by averaging 7 yds/carry but maybe he was not on the best teams. Teams win championships not individuals. You can call it luck or un-luck, someone else might call it a series of unpredictable events that results in an arbitrary score after 60 minutes. You can assign numbers to players after the series of events has concluded, but that makes it history with no bearing on the future. We are now getting into the land of probabilities. It is probable that you may respond to this but not a certainty, I could assign a number to the uncertainty but what is the point when we are both being entertained by the conversation.
  14. As hard as they try, the advanced stat community can not explain many parts of the game of hockey by looking solely at the numbers. The game was never conceived or invented with numbers in mind, other than the score, it evolved for entertainment purposes, but that’s not to say you can’t look at numbers and be entertained by the numbers, but don’t try to sell the common viewer on why things happen because of the numbers. I like Wilson by the way, his contributions and opinions are entertaining.
  15. The $13.5M dollar save. I wonder if he can do it again? PC obviously thinks he can. BSD must be thinking he is worth double that. This is not the time to be side tracking BSD with $ talk. Now is the time to keep BSD focused on the task at hand.
  16. BSD has single handily defused any goalie controversy, if there was one. With a SA% and GAA in top 3 in league he may have entered a territory where no Flame goalie has ever been, not even Kipper. Manage his starts moving forward and lets go win the division....plus some.
  17. Oliver Kylington is showing well at times. The way he skates and razzal dazzals in traffic with the puck at times reminds me of Scott Neidermayer and Erik Karlsson. Last evening vs Jets there were at least two occasions where he reminded me of such players. At 21.5yrs, the sky is the limit for this kid. With Hanifin, Valimaki, Andersson and now Kylington, our defence is shaping up nicely for natural progression within the Org as our veteran dmen age. I think our defense is in fine shape.
  18. I think that is a misconception from the fans, Sigalet makes his suggestions because he is closer to it, that's his job, but the Head Coach makes the final call, and that goes for every player on the ice.
  19. No sir, I believe Niemi was undrafted. I think if he continues to do what he has been doing the job could be his before the season is out, might be his already, but goaltending is all about "what have you done for me lately". Smith goes 6-0 then lets in a stinker and some want him pinned to the bench. If Ritter goes 6-0 from today and then lets in a stinker, I hope fans would be a little more lenient with him. If Ritter goes 0.920+ all year we gonna do some damage. 11 teams (including us) have won a SC since 89 with a goalie they drafted, wonder how the other 20 teams feel about their goaltending drafting and development.
  20. Here is an interesting stat for you. Since we won the Cup back in 89 (29 yrs ago) there have been only 11 goaltenders that have won a Cup with the team that drafted them. We had one of them so maybe we have not been that bad. Holtby Murray Crawford Quick Fleury Osgood Ward Brodeur Richter Roy Vernon There are even less goaltenders if you look further back.
  21. Your welcome son. Never said Rittich got the mechanics all of a sudden, said the opposite in fact with 2.5yrs of mentorship and training within the organization. Not every draft pick plays in the NHL. You tell me which goalies this organization handled poorly, then let get away only to move on to have long and successful NHL careers elsewhere then I will show you an atrocity.
  22. If Gillis was gifted the keys to the A then it was because Rittich out played him, leaving him behind on his way to the Bigs. Rittich did not arrive here 2.5 yrs ago the goalie that he is today, far from it, otherwise he would’ve shown it well before now. I’ve seen a huge improvement in his play since he arrived with this Org. If I remember correctly over the past couple of seasons, Rittich had issues with his edges, meaning not being able to stay in position between the posts, but rather sliding to far out of position. I also remember this non-existent puck handling skill, handled the puck like a grenade. We all like Rittich (right now) but please throw some water on your “Rittich vs the World” theory because he had a ton of help from Smith and Sigalet along the way, lets give the Org a little credit. Sigalet takes it on the chin for all the goaltenders that have failed, but when one does make it (Rittich) he takes it on the chin too, LOL. It’s now Rittich’s time, lets see what he can do.
  23. I think our possession game has improved immensely, it really has. Unfortunately we can not possess the puck the entire time, sometimes you have to send it.
  24. Your list is a little thin for a giving time of year. How about adding; -Veteran leader who continues to mentor Rittich. -Acts as a 3rd dman with his ability to handle and play the puck. -Alters the opposition game plan by forcing them to think twice before sending one or two men in on the fore check. -Reduced opposition fore check results in reduced hits on our dmen, reduced dmen injury, reduced forced giveaways by our dmen, reduced energy expelled by our dmen from not having to necessarily race back to initially handle the puck, and allowing the dmen to save their energy for other areas of a 60-minute game. -If the opposition commits to the fore check, Smith has the ability to dish off to a dman on either side or get the puck up the ice quickly to friendly sticks. You make it sound like all Smith does is “off the glass and out”. Sure he is forced to do it on occasion, no more than some dmen are forced to do it on occasion, if that is the only play the opposition gives you then you do it, but there is much more to Smiths game than that. Now if I had a complaint or two, I’d say he sometime hangs onto the puck too long creating that “Oh My God” play and on occasion gets caught out of his net in traffic. Nobody likes that. I have no problem with how the goaltending starts have been handed out, with Smith getting the longer rope. What we should be happy about is Rittich closing the gap and possibly surpassing Smith by seasons end. That was the game plan after all when Smith was brought in here on a 2 yr deal. Rittich will have his turn. Having said that, I don’t care who they start tomorrow, which is a great situation for us to be in.
