  1. When the NHL announced the recent framework for an expansion they were specific in saying it was designed to give expansion teams a better running start and not like previous expansions where they were basically fodder for the rest of the league.

I think you or someone else mentioned that before.

If that were the case, where would you slot them in the 1st round?

  2. It is a cool idea but I don't think Quebec is ready and Las Vegas well is it really a good idea to give either of them a head start? Apparently the Quebec group was fine when our $$ was higher... not so much now as things are really quiet. Vegas seems ready to go.. Arena almost finished, seasons tickets sold. Waiting patiently.

It could mean we get a lower pick. But I think it's a great idea.

But look at how long it took San Jose, Ottawa, Atlanta and other expansion teams to get things looking respectable.

I wonder if Quebec backs out.

  3. If there is going to be an expansion draft, notice of it it will likely come before this years draft. Maybe from the board of governors meetings around the beginning of June.

There is no way you can do an expansion draft next year on short notice.

If there's an expansion draft next year, can the expansion team(s) draft this year?

I guess they need longer to prepare for that.

I think it would be interesting and cool if they could. It would give their prospects an extra year to develop.

  4. Difficult to answer this while staying on topic unfortunately...

Gaudreau is the oldest, and smallest of the three. He's had the most success but I don't consider him the most valuable. At this point in time, anyway. That's not a knock on him. I just have a really high valuation of Monahan and Bennett.

There are some young Defencemen that I would trade for Gaudreau. Coming back on topic.....

Yes, I agree, they are difficult to trade because it's extremely hard to win that trade. For a goalie, it would have to be someone like Matt Murray or better. It Could happen but it's unlikely and I'd think we'd lose that trade.

Gaudreau runs the play. Other than him and Monahan there is almost no offense. Sure, Backlund has started to get some points, but I am with a lot on the radio shows who say, where are these points when they matter most, and games are tougher.

  5. It's hard to say. I want a good goalie too. There doesn't seem to be much floating around out there right now. From what I am hearing, if the expansion draft goes next year, some extra goalies might be available through trades, just to get something for them. But who knows.

  6. I am using it as an example that .918 still wasn't getting the Leafs into the Playoffs. Granted we have a better team than Toronto, but our defensive lapses still open up a guy who can play. It's a matter of team make-up, system and defence as it's about getting a better goalie.

I think Reimer could do worse here, but that's just me, as I think Babcock may coach defensive systems a bit more than Hartley.

  7. also .. with the likelihood of an expansion draft , many prices will come down

It Absolutely will  probably to between .905-.910

    Staying Optimus-tic

The assumption is that goalie James Reimer has found his way to unrestricted free agency at exactly the wrong time. To be precise, Reimer is said to be a good fit in Calgary, and nowhere else. If true, that gives him little or no bargaining power.

Embedded ImageI believe he’ll do better than whatever might be offered by the Flames in a limited market. Other teams don’t have to be desperate to show interest in Reimer once they examine his 2015-2016 numbers.

For the last-place Toronto Maple Leafs, 11-12-7 with a .918 save percentage can be called respectable. For the San Jose Sharks, 6-2-0 and a .938 save percentage, plus three shutouts, is an indication of what Reimer might be able to do with a better team in front of him.

This is why I am not as optimistic as some. I know it's Toronto, but he had good numbers with them and still played at a near .500 record, but his numbers jump out on a good team.

Are we that good team yet?

I got the quote from Dave Hodge on TSN. His thumbs are up for Reimer.

We are only how many points up on the Leafs?

  8. also .. with the likelihood of an expansion draft , many prices will come down

We have the same view on our goaltending then. I think it's a mix of both average goaltending and poor team defence. We still need to get a good goalie, but that good goalie will only get us to the point of sniffing a playoff birth.

Someone was posting a few pages back about 30 less goals against puts us at how many more games won. Sure, numbers can be used, but they're not real in-game situations that are being considered.

Like take last year for example, the team won despite horrendous possession numbers. Anyone would look at it and say, this team is not a playoff team. The in-game situation changed that as you can't account for what happens from game to game. But you still have to get better at having the puck and keeping it out of your end and ultimately out of your net.

  9. My issue is not with Bishop per se, its the fact he can walk for nothing after 1 year , and also in the belief that people think he will bring his .924 with him- second rounder is all we should be giving up for him if hes a target , no more

That's what I fear. How many holes does Tampa have on their roster?

What Drouin, I think is failing to see is, that there aren't a lot of holes where he can slot and get his ice time he wants, in comparison to guys like Monahan or even McInnon are getting on their respective teams.

He's failing to see the process.

Sure, I think Bishop can mask a few mistakes, but I still worry that the GAA and S% drop due to our teams roster. How much do they drop, I don't know.

  10. For me, I am very interested in seeing what Jankowski does. Perhaps it's my soft spot for the underdog, or the least liked player. It seems like fans are 50/50 on the player. I worry about trading him too soon. He has always displayed having some of the best skill at development camps. So I think there's something there.

The untouchables are the core though.

    Monahan

    Gaudreau

    Giordano

    Brodie

    Hamilton

    Bennett

  11. We will  be getting a starter this coming season, so a rebound will happen.  We won't be trading the core to do it, nor trading significant prospects to do it.  So Gio/Brodie/Hamilton/Johnny/Mony/Bennett/Backlund/Frolik are not in any trade plans.  Prospects such as Kylington, Andersson, Shink, Poirier, Janko are not in the trade picture either.

I'm not sure of what could be used to make the trade, but there are some interesting goalies that teams will be forced to trade this season.  Perhaps even Ortio could be used in a trade.

I agree with you for the most part. But I think that Poirier and Shinkaruk could be had. At this time they're currency.

Backlund could be a trade high candidate. But I am not very sure he'd be one Treliving would trade.

I think the major untouchables are the ones you mentioned and Backlund could be the loose one that could be pried away.

  12. When you look at Bennett's stats they are right with Monahan's in his rookie season. Any judgement to trade him will be dependant on next year's play.

Not sure which poster said it, but I would agree that despite needing a goalie we need better defensive coverage. A goalie should be high on our list but Bennett for Bishop is ridiculous. Better D coverage with just average goaltending, we move leaps and bounds from this year.

There are not many teams in need of goaltending especially a starter. Reimer could be a good stop gap for 2 season's at 3 million. I would even look at a back up as well, Ortio is not in my cards as any part of our goaltending tandem. If were trade for any goalie it would be Murray out of Pittsburg, it would be a huge over payment as well.

I am with you on this. I know it seems like I argue against having better goaltending. What I am actually saying is, the team can only improve so much with better goaltending that we're not necessarily in a playoff position. Other than having a good goalie, if we got one, our team is not very hard to play against in the defensive end.

I fear that if we get Bishop, for say Bennett, our team makes him look bad. I fear the same about getting an Elliotte. But we will never know.

I see Bishop as someone who is slightly worse than Crawford. And some on here believe Crawford is just average or above average. Sometimes the team makes the goalie better and sometimes the goalie makes the team better. I'd rather it somewhere in-between, and we're nowhere near the in-between when it comes to coverage and possession. Although closer than the year before.

  13. The one thing I think that makes it dangerous is the whole notion of, "if you win, you play." That can be troublesome because it can get into their head and worry too much about getting the next start. Goalies need confidence and that system can get in a goalies' head and affect how he plays.

  14. That's a very important question. And none of us know the answer to it.

Personally next season I'd sort of like to see us start the season like we did with Hiller and Ramo in 14/15, Essentially alternating games.

That way both goalies are somewhat rested, but also not out of action very long. See how they both perform. If Ortio steps up and we wind up with a tandem? great. If he is outplayed, then drop his games back and hope he can keep fresh.

If we go that route, I want them to give a string of starts rather than alternate every game.

Give 2-3 games in a row. I'd rather a goalie get on a roll than have them alternate losses.

    I think that's why Ramo's play improved.

A starter can be okay in a loss and realize he is still getting the next game, whereas this year, each goalie wasn't that sure and I think that insecurity crept up into their games. That's all 3 goalies.

So I think give both goalies 3 starts each.

    Or you can go:

    Goalie1. 3 games

    Goalie2. 2 games

    Goalie1. 2 games

    Goalie2. 3 games

They get to play and not sit too long and maybe see what they have.

But they know they get a next start after playing one game.

  15. OH I'm not going to claim that he's been stellar, just better than his win-loss numbers would suggest by themselves.

He's performed (since call-up) at a decent backup save%. Not great, not terrible. But also not wonderful. Merely acceptable.

The difference between him and Ramo is that Ramo is near the end of his career in the NHL, Ortio is just starting. He's put up better numbers in other leagues, and his numbers in the NHL may well improve.

If they do? Fantastic. If they don't? He's still a backup that won't hurt the team. Roughly 50% as a backup isn't stellar, but it is fine for that role.

    Currently? No.

The future? Unlikely, but I wouldn't be predicting ceiling on a goalie who has only played a stretch of NHL games greater than 5 once.

I get what you're saying. But a good backup goalie gives his team a chance to win. I get the numbers and having a 2.00 GAA in about 5 of his losses should get him a few more wins, but the reality is, teams play different in front of their backups, and we aren't necessarily accounting for coaching changes where Hartley may have decided to be more defensive in the game which would hinder the output in offence.

All I was saying is, his win-loss itself is a decent record for a backup.

Another variable we aren't looking at is the fact that this record and GAA/S% is in a condensed sample size. If a starter stays healthy and Ortio is backup, his games will be more spread out and who knows what he will be like with sporadic starts.

  16. Wow, just wow.

We both pointed out aspects of lousy goaltending and you turn it into a lynching of Ortio. He has a 6-9-5 record for the season. One shutout. He played a bad game. He had a good game against the Oilers. Last night he was on par with Hiller or Backstrom this season.

Consistency is all you would expect of a backup goalie. I may be pointing it out to you, but BT is also looking at the same games. If he won 5 in a row, then it's a different discussion. But it's not.

As a back up goalie that's not a terrible record. He also had somewhere between 3-5 games where he only let in 2 in losses.

When we had Kipper, if our backup was able to do that, we would have had a rested Kipper and an extra 17 points.

  17. Signing Nakladal to a 2 year deal could be perfect.

Being older, he can be a good 6/7 guy.

Anderson probably needs 2 years in the AHL.

Kylington could need 2 more to bulk up.

    Is Kulak ready?

A one year could work if you think someone else is ready.

    Brodie, Hamilton

    Giordano, Jokkipakka

    Engelland, Wotherspoon

    Nakladal

Of course pairings are up for change. Giordano and Brodie could end up back together.

  18. For me, Ortio has to have a big summer and come in ready. That seems to be what knocked him out of it last year. Could it have been the signing of Ramo, looking like they were going to go with Hiller and Ramo, maybe. But it's still up to Ortio to put in the work to improve and be ready in training camp.

From what we've heard, he didn't really come in prepared and didn't have very good practice habits. The fact he refused a conditioning stint as well hurt his image, Hartely's perspective.

I am surprised and wasn't an Ortio fan. If he can continue his play, I am willing to give him a chance. But he has to make sure he works for it this summer.

  19. JH & Money don't need a RW talent. They do fine on their own.

Of course it would be nice but they don't need it. Look at their production this season..

    3d8ce5c6865aedf4770d290118e6637c.png

137 points between the 2 of them and a little more to come.

I am not saying a RW is unnecessary, but it is not the huge deal some are making it out to be right now.

I think if need be, the RW can wait until next season when cap opens up, unless we get a lucky lotto pick in top 3.

For me, if we want Bennett to be a C, we need that right wing to play with him, if it ended up a RW or LW, that remains to be seen...

But I think we need wingers to play with Bennett more than Monahan and Gaudreau needing someone.

  20. We could bounce back and forth on this "ready" question forever. One could say we got the goaltending last season and made it with a lesser team (granted some over performances). We didn't get good goaltending this year and we didn't get the over performances but may have found some late answers for next year. Experience is the key factor for getting better and the players we will come to rely on IMO did well this season. If BT can move some of the players that did not and that we no longer rely on with better players and good goaltenders we should be better off for 2016/17.

Yes, and I think outside variables as well aided in us making it too... The LAK and SJS both having off years. In all likelihood it gets even harder if teams like Arizona, Edmonton, and possibly Vancouver improve.

Moving out the players that take up space is the hardest part in this whole thing. It's a shame really. We were in contract and cap hell, clearing space to only put ourselves back in it when the build wasn't even over....

This where we wish we could be GMs. I wouldn't have signed Stajan or Raymond. But anyway... We talked about them and all of the other signings. The good thing is BT signed them in his first year as GM.

I just can't see enough of those bad contracts out to make significant difference, outside of getting a really good goalie.

The goalie will allow us to compete so I agree there.

  21. No one is saying a that upgrading goalie will fix everything or solve all the flames problems. Of course there is more to do, but upgrading in net jus happens to be the biggest priority, IMO of course, and the one that will have the most impact. As I said earlier I think with an upgrade in net this is a playoff bubble team but it's also another big step from being a playoff bubble team to being a contender. That's where the rest of the improvement needs to take place.

Goalie is not a cure all and no one says it is. It's just the biggest improvement they can make to the team and the most significant.

Yes, and that's all I am saying and agree we NEED that goalie the most. But we have so much work in other areas that I can't see it vaulting us into the playoffs as much as, like I said earlier, probably get us around 5 points out.

I am fine with it. I want more, but I think it's just reality and cautioning against the idea, not getting us ahead of ourselves. I am a realist.

I think it's great the young guys are performing. I just see so many holes still and I think it's about an extra year away.

Last year all we added was Hamilton, Frolik, Nakladal. We are seeing what the last guy can do now at the end.

I also agree, when the team plays as five man units consistently, we are close. But we saw how hard that is to do in the NHL when other teams take us seriously. Which I don't think happened last year when we made the playoffs.

  22. I am still in the belief that with a starter we aren't a playoff team. We are just not built like the Ducks, Kings and even the Sharks yet. The Central is far too good right now too to be penciling us in any of the wildcard spots.

There are too many holes. I am not saying don't get the starter, because we need one, and I want a great one too. But this team is far from where we want it to be. Far sound like a long ways to go, but I think it means we are 2-3 years away. We may have one or two more playoff misses before we get back on the track we thought we were on after last year's success.

I am just trying to be a realist. If we are filling needs with home growns, then we still have to get those players developed to fill the important roles.

With a goalie, we will be within 5 points striking distance but still miss, I think.
