  1. Times I have watched Roy he has looked okay. He seems to need some work on his high side both glove and blocker. I have sen a bunch of goals top corners just over his shoulders. This could be due to him dropping into the butterfly too early as well.

I don't know whether he has played most of his career in the ECHL, but, maybe it could be a timing issue as well if he is dropping too soon. I get he is a work in progress, as is Ortio. Things are looking up with Ortio though. Mind you, two games are a small sample size and you can never tell with these things.

  2. People should keep in mind that Berra looked good early. It's a good start, but the mob will turn quickly if it goes south. Which is why I think you move Ortio down of he falters.

I think it is good to give Ortio some games to know what the NHL is like and then get season ending assignments on what he can work on to improve. Send him down for the playoff push and get him some meaningful games.

Roy didn't look that great against the Griffins. He looked more like a back up goalie. Anytime the Griffins were in the Heat zone I never felt comfortable as he looked pretty shaky and out of position. With that said, the Heat did lose in the shoot out...

  3. I think we play Ortio until Ramo comes back, then send Ortio back down to play good minutes in the AHL and hopefully lead the team well into the Playoffs. That kind of pressure is better for his development.

I didn't see the game, but watched the replays on this site. I feel like his side to side movements aren't as fluent as Ramo's but maybe that's age and position? Not bringing him down, but being that he's still young and developing, given the way he's playing, it's a good sign. Hopefully he continues to develop and get better.

I like his demeanour most of all. The fact he is so laid back about his approach makes for a hard as nails attitude.

  4. Any word yet on whether we're dealing with Ortio or JMac staying up?

My vote is definitely JMac as the backup, and it looks like others feel this way.  Strictly for more consistent and complete development for Ortio, including the Heat's playoff run.

However, I have this horrible feelling that they will call Ortio up and bench him for the rest of the year.  Which would suck, because what's the point of acquiring a 2nd round pick if you need to ruin the development of a top prospect to do it?  But I'll save my whining and bantering...until we know more.

I think that with the Ramo injury, Ortio is the guy for now with MacDonald as the back-up.

  5. I have heard the same thing from many Pittsburgh fans!

Do you think that Fleury was one of those goalies who benefited from the equipment before the new regulations were put in place? First it was shoulder pad regulations, then goalie pads... He has sucked for awhile, it is unbelievable the Pens still have faith in him...

    ?

  6. Berra to Avs for a draft pick.. Go Ortio....

Edit: Fan960 confirms that no trade on Cammy.

Jmac is going to be backup tonights game.

I guess Ortio is #1 until Ramo is back... I hear MacDonald was called up...

  7. Maybe just me, but I was really impressed with Ortio.

I never wanted him up here to begin with...far too early. But I thought he played an overall solid game.

I am very much looking forward to a strong playoff performance from him this year...and I see him making a run for a spot on the Flames in the fall.

I was at last night's Heat game and thought Roy was very ordinary. The Griffins held the play for about half the game, so they deserved the win, but the Heat could have easily won at the same time. So I wished Ortio was playing last night for the Heat.

I hope he can have a good playoff too. The Heat could use a different philosophy, but then  that is another conversation...

  8. Even if we do not know what depth we have at the goalie position, I am very optimistic that the goalie question will be solved the next 2 years.

But Ortio shouldn't get a game on NHL level already. He is playing great in the AHL and he knows how to play in the AHL. Give him the feeling of the NHL without a game, that he knows what he has to develop, give the Flames coaching stuff a look at the prospect and show him the skills he needs for an NHL game. As someone has already mentioned he is just 22 and I don't think it will help his development, if he is thrown into an NHL game.

I believe Ortio knows that he has a future with the Flames, if he will play before the Olympic break or not. Give him the first NHL game next season. No more mulligans!

I think, if you give him a game or two the Flames would get a sense of what he needs to work on against NHL opponents. He would get his summer assignment of what to work on over the summer.

  9. OK, in reference to the underlined part:

    2011 Baertschi

    2012 Jankowski

    2013 Monahan

    2013 Poirier

    2013 Klimchuck

And those are only the 1st rounders, look at the just past few years what they got out of later rounds:

    Selioff

    W-Spoon

    Gaudreau

    Gillies

    Brodie

Now I`m not saying some of the off the chart picks like Poirier and Jankowski were well received by some of the experts and heck even me as a fan was not too sure about them.   However, all the above names are developing VERY well, and all should make very solid NHL caliber players.  It is even quite possible to see 2-3 star level players out of that batch, now keep in mid I said stars not super-stars in the likes of Crosby, Stamkos, etc.  But we are talking the likes of Cammy or Langkow or better which if you have 5 players (all be it in differing roles and skill sets) I think you have a very solid team core just from the 1st round picks alone.  Then add some of our later round picks (not all mentioned above) but those 5 above, should all develop into about the same caliber, as of our d mentioned I see them as a Morris or Regher level which, is just fine by me.

No, all and all, stand pat, let our draft team do their job with what we have (unless we get knock our socks off offer), they have established them selves well enough in my books and let us be honest, the current draft team look like gods compared to our early 2000 draft team (Fata, Nystrom (though not too bad now by by no means as good as some in his draft class), kobasew, Krahn, Pelech, Irving etc.)  Between 2000 - 2010 we really only got luck with Phaneuf and Backlund and those were very strong draft years so it was much harder for them to fail.  More over come 2007, the winds of change started with Backlund in term of our draft team, so they were new, learning and still more people being shuffled for a few years there after.

Now however, this team is in place for a few years and look at the results just in the past 3 yrs.  I would have to say they have proved their worth.

To be fair, so far there are 3 who are almost guaranteed NHL players, Baertschi, Monahan, and Brodie. The others still have a lot to prove.

So. What is different about the scout team from the past than it is now? I really don't know who the scouts are, and I think we must have added a few more across the board.

Monahan was the BPA (a no brainer) and Baertschi was a last minutes decision...

  10. The point is, do we want to be a bottom seed playoff team for a long time just because a goalie can carry us. Its the same crap as with iggy and kipper they could only carry us so far, its gonna end up monahan and xxx as goalie.

Were going to achieve nothing in the playoffs, and get nothing in with that draft pick.(who knows we could be blessed and get someone)

We cant just look at the standings and the goalies and be "if we had x here instead of berra we would be in the playoffs"

Aiming for the playoffs at this time, and moving pieces to make it happen would set us back farther than most can imagine, Reminds me of what vancouver is going through, they're going to need to retool fast or its the bottom for them aswell here soon.

  11. I like that we're winning and trying, but I have to agree with you. I understand that teams like the NYI aren't going anywhere yet constantly draft high, but that's because Snow is a tool. He trades Moulson and more for Vanek and now will probably get less than he gave up, yet could have got more from a deal that involved Moulson. But that kind of management gets you no where…

Now, we, I believe, since our drafting has been elbowing forever needs to be in the top 5 and I say even top 3 because we can be almost guaranteed a decent pick can possibly push the team forward. I am happy we're winning, but I am worried it's at a cost of a top3 pick, and it may just catapult us back to drafting 6th or 7th or something like that if we keep this up. I just don't trust the Flames' scouts yet. It has been too long without that draft win and for the most part, drafting nobodies.

Everyone says, but wait until after the trade deadline as we will get rid of a few players and we'll lose more than we win. We said that last year and we won a lot and I am happy with Monahan, but this year's apparently not a good draft year, so anyone past 5th overall could be a  wash, even though you never know. I'd prefer to draft the players who are closer to a sure thing.

I also don't like the idea of losing on purpose. If you look at each goalie in those 5 wins, I don't think any of them were a starters. Anyway, I don't think we need a goalie right now who is going to hide deficiencies. We'd get blasted in the playoffs, well, maybe we'd win a few.

  12. Thank you!! Someone that actually gets it! There is actually nothing wrong with Ramo and Berra. They are adapting quickly to the nhl game and in many games give us a chance to win. San jose could easily have won 6-2 if not for Ramo.

We are spoiled in calgary and its unfair to any goaltender we could bring in. We believe its a goalies job to steal lots of wins to be considered "an nhl goalie"

A goalies style needs to match the style of the team.in calgarys case, that goalie needs to be an acrobat to handle multi chances, screened shots and quick passes due to the porous defense

Kipper came at a time when we were a strong defensive team, he fit our style and got to see every shot, rarely faced a second and it clicked.

We have come to believe no wins=bad goaltending, not true, look north for proof of that

You could put ramo and /or Berra in Boston, st louis, chicago , detroit or san jose..and they probably win a cup. They have both shown me they are good enough.

Furthermore, I would not trade them for Jimmy Howard, Niemi, Halak,Crawford or Rask straight up.....ok maybe Rask. :)

Why? Because every single one of those goalies would be getting lit up here as much if not more than our current 2.and this board would have a new thread called "what's wrong with X" while we debate why this stellar goalie can no longer win games.

About the only goalie in this league,I would rather see back there is a healthy Pekka Rinne. Just because hes proven he can steal games for a bad team

We should be signing Berra to a 2 year extension. Running with both through end of next season, trading one for prospects and or 2015 draft picks and promoting ortio to back up at that time.

Anything wed be willing to give up for a "real" goalie should be going towards D

I agree, I just think we're about 2 years away from looking for a new goalie if that's going to happen. The team has too many shortcomings to search that guy out just yet. We can ruin a goalies' confidence if we get him too early and then what? We waste more assets on finding a good goalie.

For me, I stay the course for a bit and when the team starts putting things together I'd look into it. I'd rather know that the holes are filled before putting someone between the pipes to hide what we're lacking, much like what Kipper did for us while he was here.

  13. If the deals for Dubnyk and Scrivens are anything to go by this seems to be the time to get in on the goalie market. If he can get a youngish goalie with greater potential than Ramo or Berra on those kind of terms then he does the deal, no question.

I wonder though how good or bad these two goalies really are. I wonder what Ramo, in particular, would do with a real team in front of him with a good defence? He isn't consistent, but I also wonder how much it has to do with the team. We're so used to Kipper that most don't know what good goaltending looks like as Kipper was really good and not just good. How do we really know if Ramo is good with the state of the team?

So we trade Ramo for a bag of pucks to a team willing to give him a chance, who can actually play D, then he's lights out, then what? Of course it's a hypothetical, but it could happen… Osgood didn't need to be great in Detroit and how many Cups did he win?

He also played in th loss on Nov 28th here.

Kane had this to say about Berra & his play:

I feel like we don't give our goaltending the benefit of the doubt. We never take into consideration the saves they're not suppose to make and then when the team doesn't get enough goals to bail out the goalies, we still blame it on the goalies. Like I say, it works both ways, the goalies bail out the team, and sometimes the team needs to bail out the goalies with goal support.

  15. I think both goalies are progressing but the next step is to stop giving up these big goals, most of them not very good ones, and make key saves. That's going to continue to plague this team if either Ramo or Berra can't start coming up with big saves. That's the main think I ask of a goalie. Flames should have won in regulation last night and it's what you need if you want to be a starting goalie at this level.

I think a part of that has to do with the defense. If Butler gets the puck out a few games ago, we win that game. I think it goes both ways as Berra/Ramo could make those saves too. It's a team game.

What was the score in that game? I know the score, but I am just saying, they guy only let in how many goals? If that's not giving your team a chance to win, then what is? If you can't score more than one goal, you can't expect to win many games that way.

  16. I feel like the goalies are learning how to play in the NHL and deserve some leeway. They're basically playing them knowing they're going to make these mistakes much like they know players like Brodie, Monahan and Colburne are going to make mistakes learning to play the NHL game in the NHL.

And it is obvious the team makes mistakes, I know goalies are suppose to stop some, but losing 2-1, we only got 1 goal and that more times than not isn't going to cut it. One more goal and they're at least in overtime or in the shoot out.

  17. See and thats exactly it. I love jmac, the irony is hes exactly what we needed for years, and havent had since jamie McClellan. Top quality backup, wins when he plays..can handle a larger load, quality character. Probably best guy to have behind a rookie.

Until such time as both ramo and berra have proven they can split the load I dont want him going anywhere. But when that time comes I hope they move him to a contender. I think if you expose him on waivers, he gets snapped up..the oilers especially, if MacT has half a brain would be stupid not to.

Unless he keeps playing lights out, I think you might see ramo do about a 10 game stint in the A just to test out berra before xmas. If he shows well then they make the move in the new year

Are we allowed to send a player down to have 3 goalies up?

  18. Personally I don't think you will get an official announcement of any sort other than what we have already seen.

    Remember he told the Finns Olympic program something like "he was going to retire and if the Calgary Flames haven't already announced it..." This indicates he has;

    1. Made up his mind.

    2. It is only on Calgarys end that they don't want to announce it.

There are a few things at play here.

    1. His contract.

    2. Flames ability to eat the contract and the cap hit(cap hit 5.833m; contract hit $1.5m)

    3. Either way in this contact with throw away years, Calgary is going to have to pay and eat the remainder of the contract.

    4. There is little benefit to Calgary wanting a "formal retirement or statement" as they still have to pay.

    5. Kipper seems to have made his decision and is unlikely to change it.

Pretty much the same deal as trying to trade him at the trade deadline last year. Calgary wanted it, Kipper pretty much rejected it in advance, and Kipper gave the talks to TO minor lip service to passify Feaster and the Flames with the outcome exactly what Kipper said before as to what he was going to do.

Maybe the Flames want to do a surprise ceremony for the Fans in the first home game and are keeping it tight lip?
