  1. That one does make sense JJ.

The AHL team has been struggling since Ortio went down. If they viewed the playoffs as an important part of development they would've signed a more competent goalie to help get them there.

  2. I just remember listening into the Team1040/TSN1040 Radio here in Vancouver and all of the Insiders they interviewed said Calgary had an enviable Top4 but that bottom two were not very good and makes the team worse.

  3. Everyone seemed to roast the Flames defense at the beginning of the year, now we are first in offense from the blueline in the NHL. Not to mention most shot blocks and fewest penalties taken.

I especially wanna make a shout out to Dennis Wideman. Everyone has be screaming to trade him all season and he has set a career high and is currently 7th in defensive scoring.

Also, England is stepping it up in a way that nobody saw coming. The guy isn't just some Bollig/jackman. He actually has abilities and plays an intelligent game.

We wouldn't be where we are without our defense. We may be lacking solid defense prospects but our defense right now is just fine.

I don't remember anyone roasting our D at the beginning of the year. They were raving our top4 and that it was of envy of a lot of other teams in the league. After that, they said our bottom pairing tailed off a lot.

  4. I thought Ramo was fine. That Tanguay goal was a weird lucky one. The puck was all over the place and then Tanguay scoped it out of midair pinning it to the ice and shot seemingly in one motion. How often does that happen?

  5. I was going to start a new topic on Ramo, but then, decided to just ask here.

    How much is Ramo worth?

In the intermission, John Shannon seemed to think that Ramo could ask for more money than the Flames are willing to pay. I am wondering.

Could he ask for a lot of money? I just wonder what his bargaining chips could be. He's mildly inconsistent but definitely a decent NHL goalie. I prefer to keep him, but Treliving just hasn't shown his hand.

  6. While we may have a few more goals against, you don't know whether the goalies would save those shots and cover the puck and who gets those rebounds. If the players concentrate on taking the rebounds away instead it could still work a bit differently.

But still I somewhat agree yet, know we will never know as those blocked shots aren't getting through.

  7. After Giorda

I don't think BT brought in Engelland at the price they did to not play him or trade him. You never say never but I think he is here next year.

I get beat up when I suggest busting up Giordano and Brodie but maybe with bring in someone else you spread out the talent for the better. Here is my take with the addition of Luke Schenn.

    Giordano, Wideman

    Brodie, Schenn

    Russell, Engelland

With Giordano's injury and Brodie having to play with someone else, I don't think it's a terrible idea to separate them. It depends on whether the team is better as a whole in the long run throughout the season if you do.

  8. At the end of the season and playoffs, teams will look at the results from their goaltending and decide what needs to be done. Some will extend what they have (MAF), let other walk (Fasth), or try to get in ona any FA tenders available. I admit some backups are the ones that are usually traded (Bernier), but not all of those work out. My point is that every season is different. I prefer to go into the summer with 2 NHL goalies signed. Ortio is NHL potential and probably will steal a job; Ramo flashes brilliance; while Hiller is a solid NHL goalie.

If Ortio comes into camp like he did this year, he won't win. If I remember correctly, he had a bit of a slow start this season.

  9. No to beat down the defence because I'm am incredibly impressed with how they've stepped up in Gio's absence, but it terms of going forwards you have to be carefully saying this is d core is fine and doesn't need improving. Yes they are winning I get that, but there are too many stretches where they are getting dominated in procession and getting seriously hemmed in their own zone. If it weren't for ramo playing at a vezina calibre level they lose in both Boston and Philly without question so I still think the flames have improvements to make on this d core long term to become a contending team. Brodie and Gio are fine of course but I still think upgrading everywhere else Is something I would be looking into to really turn the flames into a contender. I would agree it's probably not as high a priority as it was before the season so it needs to be the right fit, but I'm not sure you would win a cup with this blueline.

I agree, if we were able to play Wideman an Russell on the third pair, imagine what our D would be like?

  10. Calgary is not a puck position team, their system is not a puck possession system so.....

These types of stats are more the norm for us and why Advanced Stats Guys scratch their heads(Clueless) as to why.....

There are very few decent advanced stats for our style of hockey.. You could look at blocked shots I suppose

I wonder too whether it's the young team we have that is driving the advanced stats down.

If we play the same system and our guys get better, would the advanced stats stay the same or improve?

I feel like the thing that hurts us most is face offs. We are constantly chasing. We have a puck moving D corps, with the exception of the 3rd pair, so essentially, I think it's more where we are at in the rebuild.

Guys are doing what it takes to win even though we don't have the puck.

  11. I think it has more to do with his D partner and forwards he would be playing with, mostly Brodie.

When a player like Engelland plays with Diaz or Smid, he plays at their level, with Brodie he steps up a notch and looks better. In Pitts, this is probably why he looked a lot better.

  12. I don't mind losing Hiller for nothing, mostly because he signed as a free agent.

Ramo came in a deal, so I feel that is part of asset management. I'd sign Ramo and see who wins, if Ortio is ready, play it Ramo and Ortio. Trade Hiller.

There's something about Hiller I don't like. I don't know why. I think we all just have our likes and dislikes when it comes to players? I think it's because I felt like Ramo should have gotten a better chance after last year.

  13. There are 30 back-ups in the NHL. Ortio won 4 of 5 starts this season posting a .931 save percentage on the way. Are we suggesting that a team like Edmonton wouldn't pick him up to play over someone like 32 yo Fasth? Maybe you get away with it early in the season when every team figures they are still in the playoff hunt. But even then, a number of teams have back-ups they are rolling the dice on already and wouldn't mind rolling those dice on someone with more long term upside. I wouldn't be taking the risk of I was Calgary.

Did Markstrom have to clear waivers to return to the Canucks when Miller got injured? He has had an amazing year down in the AHL, although he hasn't done anything in the NHL to warrant a pick up off waivers.

I dunno? Maybe we run with three goalies a few weeks and then trade one after?

  14. I don't think that trading Glencross smells like seller.

Honestly, he's not been a full factor this season. We've won or lost with or without him. I have a feeling they will shop Backlund and Raymond because we've won and lost with or without them as well.

If we can get anything for Bollig, I assume they think he's also someone we don't really need.

Stajan has been a good soldier, but is playing fourth line minutes. So, I think Treliving is selling off guys who aren't making a huge difference.

  15. Does anyone think Gio's injury is more precautionary? Treliving was asked that if it was safe to say Gio's season was over, we would know today? Wideman was asked about playing without Gio and he responded, "Oh, Gio isn't playing tonight? Somebody said that"? Now that may be sarcastic, but from what I see is the Flames definitely do not want to take the chance of Gio injuring himself further and want to make sure he is 100% fine. The preliminary tests may show he is good to go, and perhaps, they want to further check on it. Gio is still on Long Island, that's also a good sign. Treliving confirmed if was "upper body" which is good news, which means his wrist I presume and not his knee. I would be more worried about his knee then his wrist. But on top of the Flames being extra careful, tonight's game is the last game before trade deadline for the Flames and with Gio out, maybe it might spark more interest from other teams in terms of a trade. Maybe this is a precautionary and strategical move by the Flames?

We can only hope for the best. I am hoping to see Gio in the line up next Tues against Phily, along with another top 4 acquired by deadline day, in which it would look like Treliving would have to be more aggressive due to the "alleged" Giodano injury. The Treliving interview sounded oddly suspicious.

I can't see this as negotiating from a place of strength. Other gms may now think we NEED that other Dman in a deal and ask for more.

I can only see this as precautionary to be sure Gio doesn't further injure himself. If it seemed more serious he'd probably be on his way home by now, and checked over by doctors in Calgary.

My guess is there's swelling and they'd have to wait to assess when it goes down to get a proper diagnoses. Otherwise they'd have the answers by now? Not that I am a doctor or anything.

Sounds like an "upper body injury" but my initial thoughts from watching the replay was he twisted his knees, fell, and landed on them hard.

After replays, I thought he could have also landed on his shoulders, arms or hand awkwardly too. Ice being as slippery as it is, once he put his arm down, quite possibly he extended/twisted something the wrong way...?

The momentum carrying his weight through against the way his arm wants to go?

They also mentioned he followed through awkward on his stick.

  16. The broadcasters mentioned that it looked like a hyperextended something in his arm/shoulder when he was slew footed (spelling).

Maybe a sprain of sorts? Hoping no tears or extreme damage, just hoping a light sprain where he is out 2-3 games.

  17. I wonder if Hartleys thinking is that Brodie can cover a lot of Engelland mistakes and may actually make Engelland look better.

It's possible they double shift Wideman from time to time as he has had inflated minutes here and there throughout the season. We can see Wides with Brodie a bit tonight as well, or even a combo of Russell and Brodie too.

The good thing about it all is, all three of these guys are used to more minutes and have played more minutes before.

We will see what spotter can do?

(Lazy to correct my autocorrect) Potter

Also, I can see why Hartley wouldn't want to break up a pairing that definitely works.

  18. I agree.

And I am still not entirely sold on Ortio. I fear he is a smaller goalie which might get noticed and teams take advantage of it. Ortio tends to leave the top corners wide open and in the nhl that's dangerous with nhl player's shot accuracy, in tight it's hard, but distant shots he goes down early...

Don't get me wrong, I am glad he won his games and I hope he proves otherwise. I want us to have the best goalie possible.

Although, I vote Ramo and Hiller again.

  19. Back on the topic of our current goaltending, I think it's quite good. And find it a little distasteful to even consider whom we should out at this point.

All year, the backstopping has been solid, be it Hiller, Ramo or Ortio's brief stint.

It's a point of power for us, why not just enjoy the ride?

Ramo was awfully good at this point last year.

    Just sayin'....

If you were around here when Kipper was in his prime, guys were outing him and blaming losses on him then too. I guess it's the nature of the beast, but I agree with you. The combination of our goalies have us where we're at.

  20. I am sure O'Conner would know whether he's NHL ready or not and ok with the possibility of playing in the AHL. It's probably more likely to play in the AHL and is probably assessing the fact what team gives him the best chance in a year or two or three.

We don't have a sure thing in net, so I can see him thinking that our situation would benefit him in the long run.

His idea of possibilities must include being a starter in the AHL to continue his development. Having Gillies or him would be great.
