  1. I think if we run with Hiller, we have to keep him the rest of the year. Not liking Hiller doesn't mean I don't see that he did a lot to help us get in, but I think, if you've chosen him to go this season you have to.

Whomever is among the tandem, would have to prove they could carry the load the rest of the way in order to trade Hiller. Because it would depend on whether the third goalie had to go through waivers.

Although, I think right now would be a good time waive one if needed. Maybe a trade happens though.

  2. I don't know about that. Some other goalie have gotten longer contracts.

As far as teams wanting a player like him, consider teams in rebuild-mode. They just have to look at the positive impact he had in Calgary. If we just offer a one-year deal or let him walk, he is going to get an offer elsewhere. At TDL, his value would probably be highest in trade, though.

Other teams in rebuild mode aren't like the Flames. We had expectations to win and I think other teams feel they need to lose to draft high while rebuilding.

  3. With Hiller, we will either see more of the same or regression. With Ramo, it could be either of those or a career year.

As Kehatch mentioned, none of the goalies are signed beyond this season. Unless we play Ortio a reasonable number of games to properly evaluate him, we won't know what we have. He may not want to even sign with us. He is ripe. And he has shown better than average starts in his recent games. He is at the age where he will improve only with a better level of competition. Not the AHL.

Hiller will want a longer deal if he is the starter this season (meaning he is playing the best). Or he will want more money.

If we are still considered to be in a rebuild, then you need to rebuild the goaltending as well. Hiller and Ramo do not allow this to happen if they are playing league average. We can't (potentially) toss away our closest-to-ready goalie prospect and wait another 2-3 years for Gillies, or longer for Mason.

Hiller is at an age where he is only going to get about a two year deal or may end up with one year deals based on his pay. For term, team is going to pay him less. His history may have good overall numbers, but he has fallen in Anaheim and possibly in Calgary as well. I just don't see him getting term.

It certainly hurt his stats, but I'd still say he's had the best games of our goalies in the pre-season.

It does show he's not ready as a starter, but I don't think it means he's not NHL ready.

Its also pretty important to note that the only NHL-experienced d-man in front of him was Engellend. That's going to hurt any goalie's stats.

NHL starting goaltenders lose in the preseason. It doesn't prove he's not a starter. Do we expect him to win every game? Or are you basing this off his play? Even starters have bad games.

Patrick Roy let in like 9 goals in one game... Guess he wasn't a starter.

I never liked Roy by the way. I am also not sold on Ortio, but can't base it on a one off.

  4. Ummmm, kehatch, Ramo got the C squad in front of him when they played the last Canucks who had more NHL PLAYERS on their roster. We won in OT, but had a mostly rookie defense and only the Stajan line. You can't say Ortio had the biggest challenges.

  5. We have to remember this is still just preseason. We know Ortio did well in his small sample last year. We don't know what he will be like long term.

He hasn't come out and stole the #1 spot in years past. Has he this year? What has his competition been like so far?

  6. I am on board with that. We do need to see what he will be in the NHL.

Maybe signing Ramo to his contract allows them to send him to the AHL, getting him through waivers?

Who would pick him up at his salary?

  7. But that's 15 games over how many seasons? And he played ok in the first of his games. He really only showed promise last year in 6 or 7 starts.

That's putting all our eggs in one basket. Or counting chickens, which ever analogy you want to use.

Personally, I think Ortio goes down early and bring a shorter goalie it's not a good trait. NHL teams pick up on it and begin to expose the weakness up top. But we will see.

  8. Ramo has already proven he can play at least half of the games. Maybe he can even play more. He has never been given a back to back start after a loss, at least not that I can remember. So I don't even know if he can play after a bad game.

Albeit, Ramo has had a bad game and still won and then stayed in to lose the next game. But that's when I'd give Ramo the rest, if he has an okay game and still wins.

  9. How do i skip ahead on an Iphone?

Sorry technical difficulty. You can't be serious in the above quote. You'd give up two rounds of playoff hockey and an amazing development year for our top young guys? There's a team up north that follows a strategy you'd love.

Development is all about patience, not rushing prospects so you can lose and get more prospects. Ortio also got injured for the last quarter of the season. Who's our backup then?

I am thinking the Flames could have still made the playoffs without Hiller last year. I know it's a perception that he solidified the goaltending, but I think that Ramo was ready for a bit more and probably could have played a bit more. We could have still had an amazing development year.

But that's past, and I am hoping that they choose the right tandem for this year.

  10. Who knows, if we didn't sign Hiller last year, Ramo and Ortio could've been a good tandem last year.

I felt like Ramo was coming on strong the previous year and could've handled about 2/3's of the games. Or just under that is. But then, I think management thought that Ortio should play more consistently.

  11. I dunno, it is hard to gauge what the rest of the league thinks. The AHL and the NHL are different, as are other leagues in Europe. Just because you're great in one of the other leagues doesn't mean you are in the NHL.

I am not worried about Ortio getting picked up off waivers. I think there are still too many unknowns with him otherwise our own GM, who has eyes everywhere on Ortio, wouldn't have signed Ramo to another year. They'd have gone with Ortio.

    Maybe they trade Hiller.

  12. They were worried with Markstrom here in Vancouver last year as well. And he cleared whenever waived. I also wonder if the rest of the league are as high on Ortio as we are, because we as fans tend to have a bias toward our own players.

I don't know the perception of Ortio throughout the league, but it seems as though Markstrom was highly touted and still made it through.

    I think Ortio clears.

  13. That's also part of scouting, knowing a player who slips through a draft. Maybe a player is on your list but lower than all of the ones on your list that you got to pick but wasn't taken by any other club.

How many times does it happen? It's allowable, so why not use it if you think a player can help the club?

  14. Isn't this the first game action Ortio has had this season. Scrimmage is different and he wasn't the starter.

Ortio played out of position a lot in the prospect camp last year in his first game back from summer break.

  15. Something I think we're forgetting about the goaltending is that when either Hiller or Ramo start their run of games, their first two games are usually lights out, the third game is mediocre but sometimes they find a way to win. Those 4th or 5th straight starts seem to be quite week.

Understanding that that's not starter quality, they're great in the roles they're playing. Those 4th or 5th games in a row are the games that bring up their GAA and drops their save %. I'd even go so far as saying that it's the 3rd straight start where the numbers begin to drop or rise.

I think Hartley should try manage them a tad differently this year.

I guess that could go against the earned mantra. But they can alway go right back with the goalie that just had a winning streak, but possibly refreshed!
