  1. I was listening to Bob Mackenzie on a call with the 1040 radio here in Vancouver talking about the Flames defense prior to the season start and he said most teams in the NHL would love to have our D core. It was always our depth up front that wouldn't cut it in the NHL. Other question marks were the Flames goaltending, whether Hiller rebounding off a bad year and whether Ramo can continue his good end to last year.

I think we have a top 3 goaltending and now looking like a great top 3 top 4D in the league. The goaltending helps. The work ethic is there.

I thought we'd have a bad year again, but I am quite pleased with what I am seeing so far. Keep it up.

I don't think they should trade Wideman until a young player pushes him out. Even still, if you have Wideman on the 3rd D pairing and still gives you what he does now, that's an amazing top6.

  2. Considering the amount of question marks over our goalies last season not really.

Considering Berra looked horrible, I felt that Ramo deserved some starts in that stint where Hartley kept starting Berra. Ramo looked better positionally.

I like Ramo. I think he should be someone we stick with. If we see him with another team, I bet he shines...

  3. The announcement for a new arena, the location and a design is definitely long overdue...

The Saddledome is 31 years old and McMahon is 54 years old...   It's time for Ken King to quit talking and making promises and issuing quotes like this one from a few months back in the spring and just get it done instead...  "I can't tell you anything more for plans on a new facility other than we are planning one and we have been for years now"...   That's exactly the problem Ken King...   You've been talking about it for years...   Now it's time to deliver...   The fans that have been paying their hard earned dollars to support the teams deserve it...

One has to wonder if the design for a new arena will be anything like some of the ones that have been rumoured in the last year or so...

    Isn't that a football stadiuM?

  4. Not thrilled with the Hiller signing. They better give Ramo a fair shot, which he didnt get last year until after the Olympics.

I agree. Hartley had a bit of a man-crush on Berra for some reason. I guess at ice-level he can see something I didn't. From on TV Ramo looked like he had better mechanics and positioning. The acrobatic saves looked good, but Berra put himself in those positions to have to make those kinds of saves...

I don't mind Hiller IF they play it out evenly. I think it could be bad development if they don't give Ramo the chance.

  5. kehatch,

why did I bring Ramo up?   Because Ortio's .891 was described as not NHL quality (even as a backup).

So I compared their first 9 games.   Ortio won.

    People got upset.

The point is getting lost over emotional semantics.

I have no interest in spending significant time debating the value of .911 on this team.

I'm simply asking why .911 is starter material and .891 is not NHL quality.

I'm simply asking why we give a 26 year old a full season's patience and believe he will continue to improve each year, when a 22 year old has an easier and more successful time than him breaking into the league.

Just asking.   I don't have "my guys".   I ask questions about performance and it upsets people.

OHHH I caught the convo in mid convo…

I think right now Ramo is seen as a stop gap for our future and does the job on a team that's not expected to make the playoffs. Ortio has some developing to do and will be better served to get starts in the AHL and continue to grow.

IF Ortio has improved over the summer and outplays Ramo, then we should play Ortio…

Until we see what the team looks like after all of the additions (to get to the Cap Floor) and build the team, we don't know what we have other than the fact that we have a team that bought in 100% and leadership who expects anyone else to as well.

Goaltending is a problem, but I consider D to be bigger because and I think we just need a good 30 game back up.

  6. i think we are all in agreement that the future is trending to Ortio, but at the same time now is not his time. hes not yet ready to carry the load, and until he is they are totally correct in leaving him on the farm to get the minutes and become all that he can be.

whether you believe ramo is a true starter or not , really , is irrelevant and youre right we can have this argument / debate all year long .. but the truth is he keeps us in games and most nights gives us a chance to win. thats exactly what this team needs right now.

doesnt matter who you put back there, they wont make a significant difference in the results from where this team is right now defense and development wise.

You could put Jonathan Quick or King Henry back there, and the results will be the same. to go out and get your " true starting goalie" ,, would be a waste of resources, money and in the end only hurt Ortio. Right now Ramo is the guy , and the best guy for the job .

I have to agree with you. You can put anyone back there and the results are the same. We have a solid team game, but there's just not enough yet to allow for real NHL numbers. YOu can argue all you want but the unfortunate thing is Ramo's numbers can't used against him because he's on such a poor team.

I wonder what he'd do on a St. Louis, or another team. I think his overall play is solid. It was way better than Berra's from the games I saw.

I do think Ramo is the guy as well.

  7. From what I saw, even when Ramo struggled, I thought he was the better of the two goalies (he and Berra). He looked calmer under pressure and held himself better positionally. Berra made the incredible saves, but that was because he was out of position.

I think he needs to play. Not Kiprusoff play, but play a lot. I think 3 out of 5 which gives him 50 games. It's for the one year and see what he's made of.

Personally, as much as Burke hates losing, I think he still realizes that we're not in a position to contend and is saying the right things and learnt from mistakes made in Toronto not to rush things. With the way the Flames ended the season, they owe it to Ramo to see what he can do, as a big part of what the team did, was due to Ramo's play.

We have to also remember, Ramo did this playing against the opposing team's back-ups most of the time so our team would have done worse if the other teams played their starters and Ramo kept us in there. That's just to recognize that the offense might not have been as good as we thought last year.

  8. Well, seeing as the Flames are far from a playoff contender, I'd opt to sign him for a 2-3 year deal.  He's only 32 years old.  His previous cap hit was $4.5 with the Ducks.  His stock may have dropped as he was rubbed out by a rookie, but he's also going to be a UFA and one of the better goalies available (along with Miller).  There might be a fight for his services, including a team like Vancouver.

$ amount is hard to predict.  Ramo is getting $2.750 from his previously signed deal during Feaster's tenure.  Hiller is NHL proven, while Ramo has only a shared season under his belt.

I'd probably opt to give Hiller $3.5 - 3.750 x 3 years or $4 x 2 years.  However, it may take the same $ amount ($4.5) or more to lure him to Calgary.

That would sound about right to me too. I could see the Canucks making a bid on him too. Although, with what they've had in goaltending lately, Miller could be there guy if he'd go to a Western Conf. team.

  9. I would love Hiller. He's a solid 1B if Ramo goes down, or has a rough start.  His contract would help with hitting the cap floor.

    How much would Hiller cost?

Do you think that the Ducks brought his stock down by consistently not playing him in the playoffs?

How much would you give him?

    I'd go 3.5 for 3 years? Do a one year at 4?

  10. Giguere is retiring...

Been taking a look around and a great name we should target as our backup is JS Giguere. By signing Berra to a one way,3 yr 1.4 per, its obvious he likely wont be resigned. He made backup salary last year and likely will come cheap on a 1-2 yr. Hes a leader, a winner and would be a great mentor for Ramo and then Ortio. Hes not #1 caliber anymore but easily a 20-30 game quality backup.
For some reason I think he will fall off a lot of teams radars who are shopping this summer so I dont think he'd be hard to land.

    he said he is retiring….

  11. Are we going to be a bubble team? Is the play in the last 30 games going to be the norm and we actually make the playoffs? I hope they don't sign goalies who hide deficiencies and give a false sense of us being a good team with talent.... We're a good team, we just have a lot of holes and low on top6 talent. I am saying, build this right. Effort is there. Now we need the talent to match the effort.

  12. Having a backup goalie with a .890 SA% and a 2.9 GAA worries me.  Not that I think we will be a playoff team, but those numbers don't exactly inspire confidence.  Berra is about the same, and we got rid of him.  JoeyMac was also sent to the AHL for the majority of the season, and only came back when they had traded Berra.

He did well last season in Kipper's absence. This year he has a very small sample size behind guys the organization were trying to get a feel for. He wasn't really given any chances this year to prove himself. Maybe he does better with a proven team with a proven number1 goalie?

  13. I am happy with Ramo and I think he's NHL calibre. At this moment I feel like this is a mute argument. We may need a back-up, but I think they'll re-sign MacD… If not, Reimer isn't the guy I want, not that I dislike him or anything.

I like that they're playing Ortio in the AHL to season up and not rush him in. Get both goalies games in and when Ramo's contract is up they can either re-up him and have them duke it out in a few years for the spot.

For a team who is suppose to be finishing last place, Ramo did a great job in keeping us in 49-50 games (one goal ones). Not that he played in all of them, but he deserves the #1 at this moment. Training camp is a whole different story though.

  14. I agree, Burke made the right call with Ramo.  He's a very smart cookie, and recognizes how important tempering expectations can be.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah, I'm sick of hearing those rumors too.  Please for the love of buddha, Burke better not bring Reimer into this club.  I'm not for being in the business of taking on the Leaf's crease issues.

I don't even know if I want any Leaf player on this team. Not sure who to start with…

And hopefully we finally win one with them and Colborne turns out to be a gem and improve on this season as his career progresses.

  15. The Scneider comparison, not quite what I was going for, just trying to throw it out there for discussion. Van's pretty wayward with goalie's, I don't hope for that. Skilled goalie to push our starter, and there just in case.

Or Joey Mac is all I was thinking, who immediately gets leapt by Ortio should our starter falter or worse, is all I'm thinking.

Oh I meant before the debacle. Lol

    That was a mess.

  16. I've enjoyed the very slow introduction of Ramo this year. I felt this should be an adjustment year rather than throwing him to the wolves.

It seems like he's getting better and more comfortable.

Perhaps next year we have Ramo and Ortio backing up. I get the "have to play Ortio in the A". But I feel it's time to advance him in a backup role and being around the big club.

Let's face it, he made Berra redundant and his progression has been outstanding.

But you risk a regression of both goalies by not playing them enough. Look at the debacle in Toronto…

How many games do you play them, split it? 45 games for one goalie and 37 for the other? I suppose there will be injuries.

I wonder how Ortio will be once teams realize he leaves the upper part of the net pretty wide open? He's a bit of a smaller goalie when it comes to todays goaltenders. I guess it's something we will find out?

  17. Remember that Gillies is only in his 2nd year, so he may not chose (or Burke may recommend) that he stay in college for another year.  We won't know until the Friars are eliminated.  If that happens before the end of the NHL season, he could sign and be available for the end of the season (as he can't play in Abby this season).

With regards to Ortio vs. Ramo next year, I can't see Ortio taking the job from Ramo as the season progresses.  Ramo has developed over the season, and has looked like a starter since returning from injury.  Battling with Berra and JoeyMac early in the season did not help get his game adjusted.  If Ortio plays well enough, you may see a 70/30 or 60/40 split of games.

Which could actually be the perfect mix for two goalies. I believe we should have done the 70% with Kipper, but we never had faith in any of the back-ups. I see Ramo as a guy who can play about 50 games and have the other goalie play the 30+. Who knows, maybe more, maybe less, and it all depends on how he does next season.

  18. Ortio was okay but I'm not well sold on him.

Ramo's decent as well, but I'm not yet sold that he's a starter.

Macdonald I have no faith in. He's okay as a backup for now, but I'd rather have Ortio/someone else for a backup.

Of all our positions, I'm the most concerned about goal. If Ramo proves to be up to the challenge I'll be much less worried.

I'd rather we hadn't traded Berra and waited to see which one was better.

I think Ramo is better positionally. I always had more faith in Ramo between the two. I am ok with trading Berra for a 2nd. It's good value for what we saw this year.

Ortio needs a bit more time. Who knows, maybe the two (Ortio and Ramo) can platoon in net. Take turns… One plays two the other plays two, or ride the hot one? I feel like Ortio is a smaller goalie, eventually teams are going to realize he takes away the bottom of the net and then score high a lot on him. We'll see.

  19. Well, to be honest, I don't know what people know about goaltending on this forum. Half of the people berated Kipper and the other half seemed to praise him. This tells me half of us don't really know what we're talking about. I for one saw Kipper for what he was worth. Someone who hid a lot of our errs. These guys are doing good for what we have. We're in a rebuild and there's no point in judging until we get some other needs filled and we'd know exactly what we have.

I think we have more than people give credit for… I like Ramo. I hope he comes back same as before his injury. I liked him over Berra. If Berra fixes a few things, he will be pretty good. He still looks a bit awkward.

  20. Ramo refused to come to North America to back-up Miikka Kiprusoff.  He will not stay in North America to back-up Joni Ortio.  I feel Ramo will want out soon enough.  I'm okay going with Ortio/MacBackup combo.  The way Ortio is playing, this is going to be a short rebuild.  With the right moves this summer, the Flames can probably contend for 8th seed next season.

Didn't he fulfill his contract in the KHL? Isn't that why he didn't come over? I don't think it was because of Kipper.
