The best thing about the Hiller signing today is that the 'Reimer to Calgary' rumors are now expunged and will stop. It's a good day.

Treliving stated in his final post draft video that they were looking for a backup to Ramo, not a starting goaltender. Whether that backup be a vet such as HIller or a younger kid such as Johnson or Greiss, they most likely won't be playing the majority, but if Ramo goes down with injury, or if he goes on a very unlucky streak, the said backup will have to play well enought to carry an NHL team.

That would be perfectly fine with me. It's going to be interesting to see where McDonald fits in the Flames' goalie development depth chart in 2 years. He's still quite a ways away from any sort of pro action.
  4. Is it prospect camp yet? -_-

Well, seeing as the Flames are far from a playoff contender, I'd opt to sign him for a 2-3 year deal. He's only 32 years old. His previous cap hit was $4.5 with the Ducks. His stock may have dropped as he was rubbed out by a rookie, but he's also going to be a UFA and one of the better goalies available (along with Miller). There might be a fight for his services, including a team like Vancouver. $ amount is hard to predict. Ramo is getting $2.750 from his previously signed deal during Feaster's tenure. Hiller is NHL proven, while Ramo has only a shared season under his belt. I'd probably opt to give Hiller $3.5 - 3.750 x 3 years or $4 x 2 years. However, it may take the same $ amount ($4.5) or more to lure him to Calgary.

I would love Hiller. He's a solid 1B if Ramo goes down, or has a rough start. His contract would help with hitting the cap floor.

I'll be saying that when I stop hearing 'Reimer to Calgary' rumors.

By that it looks like they've decided to move on from big Mac. I'm glad they've decided to do so. New backup from FA this year?

I'm interested to see who starts as the Flames backup next year. Will they re-sign Jmac? Or go for a coveted UFA? Questions, questions, so many questions.

I agree, Burke made the right call with Ramo. He's a very smart cookie, and recognizes how important tempering expectations can be. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yeah, I'm sick of hearing those rumors too. Please for the love of buddha, Burke better not bring Reimer into this club. I'm not for being in the business of taking on the Leaf's crease issues.

To the fans and the media? Sure, but certainly not in terms of trying to sell in a deal with other GM's around the league. He was pretty terrible at that. However, I do feel Feaster used more energy on selling Berra than he did Ramo to the fans. Ramo quietly showcased his skill to Flames fans (and the rest of the NHL for that matter) without the need for a sideshow announcer to boost his ego. He's a solid contender and certainly earned his stripes as the #1 going forward into next season.

The conversation isn't just about Ortio. Goaltenders are always developing their game, regardless of age. Kipper developed throughout his whole career with the Flames. Ramo's developed quite nicely thus far. After Karri took the crease back from Berra at the end of November he's gone .924%SV, 1.83GAA, 11-6-3 in 23GP. He's had to adjust to NA ice, and to a different living situation. Those are excellent numbers for an NHL starter. No one can stop you from viewing him as a backup, however his numbers and situation suggest he's a starter.

I presented you with your winning percentage that you so nicely like to bring up. That and age. ,I had nothing to do with it. If we are going with the stats in the now, and if Ramo sucks, then so does Howard, Miller, Bernier, Mason, Nabokov, and Mike Smith too. So does Ortio. There, makes sense right? Tinfoil hat, the Flames are doomed, and welcome to the next 20 years of rebuild, etc, etc. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's not hard to see how close the %'s are. If you can't, there's no sense in arguing with someone who can't.

Joni Ortio: Karri Ramo: Ramo has played 29 games. The middle portion of the season, when the Flames were doing horrible, especially on their nice little losing streak, Ramo was in the mix, and still managed a .908 sv% with only 2.66 GAA. I would say that's impressive for a team that's 25th in the league. Going by your wins stat, he's won more than he's lost, which is over .500 hockey. Ortio has been playing well, but with a Flames team that has gone 5-5-0 in their last 10, which is exactly .500 hockey. For comparible, here is Henrik Lunqvist's season: Ramo isn't far behind in GA, and is very close in save%, with a goalie that is considered the top 3 in the world. Also, the Rangers are 15th in the league. So, what stats are you looking at that make Ramo look bad?
  19. s4xon

    Goaltending

It's not all about winning percentage. In fact, that's a pretty poor stat to use, especially in year 1 of a rebuild. Last I checked, it takes a team in front of a goalie to win games. By your logic, Ortio is as close to Mac as you can get in terms of wins/losses. Same team. Ramo is 28, he'll be a tandem for at least 7 more years. Gillies is anywhere from 3-6 years away from being a starter. Better get used to it. And building around Roy is laughable. The kid is far from talented.
  20. s4xon

    Goaltending

That's a little presumptuous. I challenge any starter in the NHL to maintain a better record than Ramo has with the team he has in front of him. Ramo is an NHL caliber starter and a very good one at that. He's come a long way from his earlier NHL days. Put a St. Louis team, Anaheim, or a Chicago team in front of Ramo and he'd be a top 10 goalie in the league. I know Ortio is your fave, but the fact is, is that both have a very similar style and are both excellent for the Flames going forward.
  21. s4xon

    Goaltending

Yeah, should be interesting to see what Wardo does for that team. Things are getting really thin as is, and not just in net either. I wonder if they pull another from Alaska, or if they borrow from the BCHL or something? It looks as though the Aces only have one tender as well.
  22. s4xon

    Goaltending

Excellent game all around. Ortio has a bit of a mean streak, which I like. It shows he's not going to lay down when someone crashes his net. However, on the play, he was saved of the goal after being way out of position. Baertschi with a beautiful assist as well.
  23. s4xon

    Goaltending

It's no secret that Berra is the better goalie in one on ones and shoot outs. However, Ramo retains better vision and side to side ability, which oddly enough is very similar to Kipper's style. Ortio's style is very much the same as well. Those Finns...
