  1. I've read several comments over the years from players that it's actually easier to play big minutes than to have your shifts controlled so much. It's really hard to get into a grove when your minutes are more spare. I don't think there is any attitude problem with Engelland at all, he simply saw and opportunity and seized it which is exactly what you want to see a player do. I don't think I would use the work slack in his game at all. You can debate how much you like/dislike his game but I think there is no question he gives you what he has every night.
  2. I think everyone's whipping boy Engelland had a heck kf a game. He didn't look out of place in that top 4 and I thought really stepped up his game. The flames were on thier heels for sure in the 3rd but that's not suprising. I thought Philly wore them down physically for most of the game and the looked tired and on their heels. That's where you are going to feel Gio the most IMO is defending a lead when a team is coming. Gio is the best at been able to strip the puck and start the rush. Something I think the rest of the d core struggles with.

In terms of putting ortio on waivers and thinkng no one will claim him because it screws the flames? I would agree to a point. In 2003 Sutter put Jason Morgan on waivers to send him down but Nashville claimed him. Sutter was none to happy and suddenly within a week jason Morgan was back on waivers and back in calgary. So I think there is some. From what I see teams usually get the players they want to clear waivers cleared but there are some exceptions which is why risking it is always a tough call.

Its like you said though Kehatch, at the beginning of the season everyone usually likes their team and their goaltending and isn't interested in adding someone or adding another contract. The risk comes later in the season but you don't always have to call them up either. There is a small risk sure, but I just don't think its a given they lose him on waivers. Outside of Edmonton and Buffao I can't see other teams that would want him and that assumes that neither Edmonton nor Buffalo improve their goaltending. Having said that, If I had my way I would trade Hiller in the offseason, sign Ramo and run Ramo/Ortio.

I do agree people tend to be too concerned about waivers. Waivers are for adding pieces that can help your team now and is not a good resource for trying to add future assets because you have to offer them back to them team to send them down. I'm sure teams would like Ortio, but I dont' see many teams wanting Ortio to help them right now so I agree having him waiver eligible next year is not a huge concern it is a small concern.
  6. Exactly my point. He was overwhelmed last year and looked out of place so imo nothing I've seen or read has suggested that playing him now would lead to better results. I'm not knocking him as a prospect I just don't think the is ready and I didn't think he was last year either.
  7. From what I saw/heard from commentators, Giordano was skating no problem but could no power into any of his shots and didn't look comfortable stickhandling/shooting. I think its either a shoulder/forearm problem and likely some kind of a strain. The fact that he skated isnt' a bad thing, but based on how he looked there is defiantly an injury there that will impact him in the near future. He may end up playing but it certainly wouldn't be at 100%. Edit: as I finished typing this, Flames put Gio on IR and sent him back to Calgary. The IR isn't a huge surprise that would only mean he miss another couple games but the fact they sent him back to Calgary is not good. Schlemko is fine for depth and better then Potter. I agree that Wotherspoon isn't ready but they've really got no other call up options so on a waiver claim I'm fine with Schlemko. Just don't get your hopes up, he is barely an NHL dman.

Not a lawyer or CBA expert but am about 99% sure he is waiver eligible next year They don't use your age on the day you sign they use the age you will turn in that league year. So while Ortio signed when he was 19, for the purposes of waivers he was 20 and thus only has 3 years exemption which is why he will be wavier eligible next year

I don't agree with the last statement at all. Flames have ortio, Gilles and Macdonald who IMO are all good to very good NHL prospects and more then many teams. If Gilles stays in college go and sign AHL fodder in the off season. Finding non prospect goalies to fill your system is a very easy problem to have.

Ortio has kipper qualities, mainly in his demeanor, but not enough in their style of play to make me think there is chance ortio plays at kippers level. I like ortio, always have, and I think he can play at ye NHL level but I think we forget just how crazy athletic Kipper was and how rare that is in goalies. I don't see the same natural athleticism in ortio, but I do see the same "awe shucks" kind of demeanor Kipper had in ortio which I think can be equally rare in goalies and something that is critical to playing in the NHL
  11. Big difference for me between Kessel and those 3, compete level. The 3 you mention you would never question their compete whereas Kessel you constantly question it.
  12. Kessel needs to go to a market like florida, Phoenix, Tampa etc. one where he can operate in anonymity. From everything I've read and heard about Kessel he is very much a guy who beats to his own drum and has his own way of doing things and is reluctant to change. I think is he were to come here you would dion Phaneuf part 2. I don't think a strong leadership is going to make a huge difference because at his salary and notoriety, Kessel is always going to be a focal point regardless of how established your leadership is. His contract dictates that and his contract is not going anywhere.
  13. I also heard that was all insurance so Flames were out very little or perhaps no money. IMO, the delay is because they are trying to plan a bigger project that will involve both a football and hockey arena. Before the Flames purchased the Stamps Ken King was bragging how they were "very close" to outlining their plans, then they bought the Stamps and suddenly it changed to "we are not there yet, but we'll let you know". A few times at season ticket holder meetings he has let it slip that this project is both a revitalization and project bigger then just an arena, and the last one I went to he dropped a pretty serious hint that it was going to be both an arena and a stadium. I can't remember the phrase he used but it lead me to believe their plans include both a new arena and a new football stadium.
  14. I think Franson will end going for a fair bit and won't be cheap. It's not looking to be a very good deadline and he will be one of the few top 4 dman available so I would suspect either a 1st or 2nd with a good prospect or young player will be the price just to get the leafs listening. I am a Franson fan but he is a Wideman clone so if you have any complaints about Wideman you will feel the same about Franson. I'm not prepared to pay him over 5 mill, which is amaranth what he is asking for, unless you could trade Wideman and I'm not sure that market is there. I would want to identical player making 5 plus mill on the D core.

I don't think Hiller gets you much I'm return. He is an avg starting goalie, paid like a starter, and has an extra year on his deal that I think is going to kill and interest in him at the deadline. Maybe in the offseason but I still don't see a team giving up much for just an avg starting goalie making 4.5 mill for one year. I think you can trade Ramo at the deadline yo a team that may just want some goalie depth.

I don't think it was ever Ramos job. He was part of a rotation and now their is another effective member of that rotation who deserves to play. I do agree you shouldn't lose your job to injury but j also think you have to have a good handle on that job and also you need to be prepared to make exceptions (see Tom Brady).

    Goaltending

I think that's a one off. You caught a team and also kf I recall correctly Berra was not a pending free agent? Could be wrong. Either way I compare Ramo to the likes of Scrivens, Fasth, and Dubnyk who landed 3rd and 4th rounders.
  18. cross16

    Goaltending

At this point I think the trade value of Ramo is what it is and I don't think you are gojng to get much more by playing him. I think he is likely worth a 4th rounder at the deadline maybe a 3rd but I stress maybe. I don't think playing him is gojng to change the evaluation. Ramo isn't going to be picked up by a team neededing a starter to run with he would be looked at by a team needing another option as part of a mix. You don't pay high for that. I'm rolling with ortio until he proves otherwise. Send Granland down who should be in the AHL anyway.

I don't think either Ramo or Hiller get you much in return in trade. What team right now is desperate for starting goalie and going to pay a high price for it? I can see a team wanting one of them for depth in a playoff run or as another option just in case but you don't pay much for that. I don't think either Ramo or hiller get much, probably a 3rd round pick like Dubnyk I agree that out of the current options Ortio is the only one who has high end starter potential, but the key is potential. Ortio has the talent and I really like his approach to the game so I think he will be a good NHL goalie and personally I am completely fine with trading one of Ramo or Hiller and letting Ortio be part of a tandem. The only problem with that is Ortio needs to get a certain amount of games and Hartley seems to prefer to stick with one guy so I don't think that's going to fly. Likely Ortio will go down to the A and they will finish the season with Ramo and hiller.

Especially considering the coyotes only got a 3rd for Dubnyk, a 2nd for Bera was and is flat out larceny. I think when Ramo plays he is a very good goalie. When he sits for longer periods or doesn't consistently get into games he struggles but you could say that about a ton of goalies. Right now, I would go Ramo over Hiller as IMO Ramo has been the better of the two save for a week or so Hiller was red hot. Having said that, you roll with ortio as long as he is playing this well.

Hiller hasn't been good for week IMO. His rebound control has been horrendous he's just gotten lucky with certain bounces and the flames playing well in front of him but it's been a while since I would say hiller has played well. I agree he probably will go again tonight which is too bad but this is turning into Berra last year where Hartley is riding one guy whether or not that guy actually deserves it.
  22. Well put and I agree 100%. I don't think you can win while building around Phill Kessel and when he has the contract he has you are going to have to build around him. Not to mention I thinks it would take a lot to get him and more then you indicated. I don't think the leafs even listen unless one of Backlund, Monahan or Bennett is in the deal. One way the leafs trade Kessel is to get an elusive centre.
  23. The issues are different IMO. Carter and Richards were rumored to have off ice issues but never an on ice, work ethic or teammate issue. Kessel is in a different boat when it comes to questions about attitude. Carter and Richards just needed to grow up but there was no questioning their desire.
  24. For those thinking the attitude issues are overblown I would invite you to read the book "Future greats & Heartbreaks" which ends up talking a lot about Kessel prior to his draft year and the process of scouting Kessel. These are not new issues surfacing because he is in Toronto they are just being magnified due to the market. I don't believe he is uncoachable by any means nor a cancer but there are issues there and always has been. I happen to believe that you need a certain type of player and attitude to build a team and win a cup and Kessel doesn't fit that mold for me so I will pass. You can say he could come here and not be they guy but that's impossible. You are always going to be the guy when you male the money Kessel does and that money isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Millions tweeted after the game Ramo was walking around fine post game and singing autographs. Looks more precautionary then an injury.
