  1. I think something along the lines of Shinkaruk and a 2nd/3rd rounder. ie a younger prospect/roster player (that they wouldn't have to protect) plus a pick in the 2nd or 3rd round range depending on how his season goes and how the interest league wide is. I view him in the same light as guys like Polak and Liles who moved last year for around that cost and a step down from Kris Russell who obviously got more. He'd have to really pick up his play to approach Russell territory IMO. I don't think ever team is going to consider him a true/legit top 4 guy as he is more of a bubble top 4 guy IMO. I agree though, the fit is great. I don't quite see it that way as I think Brodie has a very high hockey iQ i just think he is a risk taker and he likes to create plays. Brodie in junior was a very high end offensive player and his ability to create plays is what jumped off the page. I'm actualy impressed he has become the defensive dman he is becuase when I saw him in junior I saw more of a pure offensive guy. I agree to a certain extent that Gio covered up some of that but I think the bigger issue is when you have a dman that is learning a new side, new partner, new coach etc you tend to go back to your old habits and try to hard.
  2. Pretty minute on Shattenkirk (who is going to command upwards of 6.5-7million as a FA) but I do think Stone is a real possiblity. I see Stone similar to Cody Franson in that I don't think the league will compeltely buy him into him as a top 4 blueliner despite some advanced stats being in his favor. He is also coming off a major knee injury so there may be a possiblity that he could be had on a shorter term deal for 4mill or less and with Treivling and Maloney here, maybe they work the familiary concept. He is a great fit for what they need. I personally think Brodie is taking too much heat from fans this year. Sure he was terrible for the first month or so but since the pairings were solidifed he's been playing very well IMO. Could play better yes, but for a veteran dman to be learning a new side, learning new coach/new system and doing it with a pretty so/so defensive partner I think more focus should be on the positives with Brodie and not the negatives. Too early for me to say he has to be a Right side dman next year.

The only person who thinks your values are accurate is you JJ. None of them make any sense and no one ever considered Hudler one of the best players in the NHL. in fact anyone worth listening to or reading said that Hudler was overrated based on him playing with Monahan and gaudreau.

Hudler, Russell and Glencross beg to differ. Previous regimes yes, but Trelivings history is that he sells high on assets. I doubt they trade Elliott but he will still hold value at the deadline. He is one of the few good goalies available that just about ever team could fit under the cap. Would they get their 2nd back, no but they would get close. Either way likely irrelevant because I don't think they will be selling at the deadline.
  5. Well first off, I think it's unfair to say a coach has something against a player that he is playing 20 mins a night. If you are willing to play a Dman 20 mins a night (which is basically what Hamilton has averaged recently) you clearly have some faith in him. Looking at the overal ice time is also very miss leading. if you looked over the last few weeks I found more often than not Hamilton is leading Engelland and Wideman in 5 on 5 TOI and what is varying the overall minutes in the special teams. Hamilton's TOI gets influenced by the PP and the Flames just don't generate alot of PP opportunities. he plays some on the PK but I understand why Gulutzan would not lean on him heavily there. I think Hamilton is getting better int he D zone but when he is in there he is still making errors that are tough to tolerate and yes I would even suggest Widmean plays better in the D zone than Hamilton. Hamilton is one of the Flames worst defenders when it comes to shots against allowed, chances allowed and high danger chances allowed.

That is what I assumed you meant. I say it's a horrible idea for two reasons. 1- don't ruin or damage young goalies who may have a future by throwing them behind a team that's done for the year and 2- don't keep throwing crappy goalies behind a young team, they need the support. I wasnt agaisnt the idea of getting future assets it was throwing young rookies behind a team that is out of it.

I don't belive protecting a goalie is a requirement its an option, that's at least how I've read it. Having said that I was assuming that Peeps plan include still having some type of veteran goalie on the roster. If the plan was to dump all both NHL vets and run with rookies that's a pretty horrible idea.

1st round draft pick for any violation of the expansion draft terms. However, Flames signed Thomas Mccollum and he meets their requirments for exposing to the expansion draft so Flames could do what you mentioned should they choose to.

That would depend on the price. If he wants a 2-3 year deal at 3 mill or less by all means sign me up but anything more no thanks. Call it the Roman Turek fear but I don't like the idea of signing goalies when they are hot. I've been very improessed with Johnson and have liked him for years but call me a skeptic that at 30 years old he is suddenly going to become a starter. I get it happens, Dubnyk and Tim Thomas come to mind, but it is rare so I want to see him play this way for a full season and handle 40-50 games before I am comfortable extending him at a starters price tag. YOu may be right, but if I'm the Flames i'm keeping my options open in net and that includes Elliott, bishop etc. It's a long season and I think we are seeing a goalie in the zone and we need to be careful to not overact to that.

Most of the time when the puck hits the crossbar it's because the goalie was in the right position and the shooter had no where else to go. The concept that crossbars should be considered lucky isn't acurate IMO. Exceptions to that but most of the time it means the goalie did his job.

Don't disagree, but I also don't thik you can let Elliott sit for long periods of time without any game action. I think he can just string 2 good games together he'd get his confidence and he'd be fine but need to try and get him those games.

Going to be interesting and quite challenging to handle the goaltending moving forward. Obviously you have to love what Chad Johnson has done and he's been terrific, but I also think the Flames need to get Elliot going. I'm not sold that Johnson can handle a number 1, 50 ish starts or more, the rest of the year and if the Flames want to get back into this they'll need Elliott. Will have to balance Johnson with also getting Elliott some games moving forward, but no question Johnson is their guy right now.
  14. Hes off to a pretty bad start. 1 point in 12 games and a -4. From what I've read, not playing well.
  15. Unless they are in breach of the contract, the only way for a contract to be terminated is if the player agrees to it. Pretty likely that Nak has a conract to go overseas otherwise it doesn't make sense why he would agree to have his deal terminated.
  16. Klimchuk has very underrated hockey sense. His hockey IQ is very high, probaby the highest of the Flames prosepct pool to be honest IMO. I don't thikn what he is doing is that much of a suprised. Klimchuk has great physical tools and a great hockey IQ, he just hasn't been healthy to put a full work into a summer to get his strength up to a point he could contribute. He did that this summer.
  17. I don't agree there. a 1 year deal screams that either Gulutzan was never THEE guy and they had to settle, or Trelivng likes him but not enough to give him the reigns. Maybe not true, but that is the optics of it all. Either way, giving a coach a 1 year deal is pretty significant based on past precedent.
  18. I do question the legitimacy of that report out there that he only signed a 1 year deal. I know Cap Friendly has it there but they also have his salary as unknown so I wonder if they just don't have any sources on it. It would be extremely rare for a coach to sign a 1 year contract and equally as rare for an organization to only want a coach for 1 year. Getting a coach for 1 year during a rebuild is a horrible decision that I just cannot see Burke or Treliving supporting.
  19. Peeps I don't think I agree with you on what you are saying with how restrictive the system is. D still have full reign to go and have gone and there is still flexabiliy to get the puck in. Problem I am seeing with Gaudreau is the book is out on him. This happened last year too when teams played the Flames, they back off in the neutral zone so the stretch pass in blocked. Now they don't have to do that because the Flames won't use the stretch pass as much, but they are able to just line up on the blueline 4 wide and just stand there becuase Gauereau isn't going to get around that. They are trying to, successfully I might add, to get Gaudreau to either dump the puck in or try and go around them which is a 50/50 game anyway and thats why Gaudreau has so many turnovers. I think Gaudreau's lack of succes has more to do with how teams have adjusted to play him and less with the "system".
  20. Im not saying that. For me flames need a better over d core and a better performace out of said d core and I don't believe they will get it by stacking one pairing and they should be still trying other pairings. If we have to keep Gio and Brodie together because Gio doesn't work elsewhere then his contract is going to become poor value sonner rather then later. I don't like that this organization has given up on balancing out the D core so quickly multiple times now.
  21. We can't say definitively no, but injury or not that fact is that so far over the last 3 seasons Gio away from Brodie hasn't been very good. Brodie away from Gio has been good, for the most part. So while not a definitive answer there is evidence building that Gio may not be as good without Brodie as he is with Brodie. part of what I'm saying is I want to find that out so I want to see Gio play with others but instead we are going back to our "safe haven". We differ strongly on how you breakdown the D cores, but that is at the heart of this. Its looking like I may be on my own here and thats fine but IMO the Flames have 1 top pair, a below average pair (especially defensivly) and a servicable but not outstanding 3rd pair. Doesn't exactly scream confidence to me. Having that top pair together hasn't exactly meant good thigns for the Flames overal D the last 2 seasons. They were terrible last year and barely average the year prior.
  22. He has yet to away from Brodie, not at last for a few years at least. He wasn't very good with Hamilton last year and Flames rushed him back with Brodie. That is what i'm getting at there seems to be a theme developing that Gio needs Brodie far mor than the other way around and rather then focus on Gio, media/fans are quick to rush back to Gio/Brodie and i'm not a fan of that. Sure they were one of the top pairings but their team and specifcially their team defence was terrible. I'm fine with those pairings, except for the fact that Brodie seems uncomfortable playiing the left side right now. NOt sure if that is temporary or not but that is my only hesitation. I'm fine with further experimenting and i'm not suggesting the way they had it was perfect or the way it should be I just don't agree with how the Flames are handling their d core, don't agree with how they are handling Hamilton, and don't like that the answer to it is to put Gio-Brodie back together.
  23. Then why is the answer to always put him back with Brodie? I disagree with the bolded as well. Sure a "respectable" D maybe but not a very good D. I dont' think Jokipakka-Hamilton is that solid a 2nd pairing and its certainly not a pairing I would wnat to lean on for 20-22 mins a night every night. I don't beleive Jokipakka is a solid enough dman in to be able to play those type of minutes and cover up for Hamilton. Not to mention I think they would get murded when it comes to line matchups. Gulutzan is really limited in what he can do but hopefully the Flames can rebuild their d in the offeseason and commit to some better pairings. IMO, they'll never get to where they want to be if they insist on keeping Gio-Brodie together and certainly won't if Gio can't prove he is a good NHL dman away from Brodie.
